And coming from the manga, start from the beginning, manga skips shitload of stuff but expandes the character relations more.
And manga follows LN, not WN, though there aren't any major differences until Cal Mira arc and forward.

I've been meaning to start this series but I was wondering what are the differences between the web and light novel? Are there really significant plot divergences or is the progression more or less the same?

LN just added more story after the MC got his revenge, especially the turtle arc, the LN made the Giant Turtle arc, heartbreaking and rage inducing. But not too many details are change.

The good news is that since the release of the manga the author said the LN sales went up "by a decent number" in his twitter and the manga is actually decently up there in popularity. Hopefully the author gets over himself and writes a sequel.
