I just learned something interesting today,
I was under the impression that the story of King Arthur was a myth, and I was wrong, there's some part of Chrétiens de Troyes's tale that refers to actual historical events.

It's mostly about the battle of Mount Badon where a warlord named Arcturus (probably roman) defeated the Saxons to protect the gallo-romans. He inspired the story of King Arthur.

I think I've come to a conclusion from all the confusion - F/SN is one of those VNs that are much more difficult to adapt to a more linear narrative, because it's much more dependant on its non-linear nature to actually tell its story, despite being barely more interactive than a regular novel. That, and the VN has a ton of content (the English translation trumps the Lord of the Rings trilogy in terms of word count), so even a less time-compressed adaptation would be hard-pressed to do it justice without taking an equivalent amount of time.

Hell, even by dying you can learn information that you wouldn't know otherwise - fun fact, in one of the bad ends in Fate, Saber, upon seeing Kirei, actually wonders how the hell he survived being shot in the heart in the previous grail war, and earlier on, she makes a reference to using Excalibur in the harbour, and Gilgamesh makes a reference to Kiritsugu interrupting his 'wedding ceremony'. Fate/Stay Night has a shocking amount of call-backs to Fate/Zero before F/Z was even a thing, though F/Z does retcon certain minor details here and there.


I honestly wonder how Fate/Stay Night would work as a fully interactive game narrative. It would certainly be a rather unique adaptation, as it would be a transition from one interactive medium to another.

Fate/Zero was originally written as light novels by Gen Urobuchi, a fairly well-esteemed writer in the business. Fate/Stay Night was written by Nasu, the main Type-Moon writer who is considered mediocre-at-best with some interesting ideas. And Fate/Stay Night originated as a pornographic visual novel which means it's harem crap with high schoolers and a terrible protagonist. To compound things, the anime version is cheap, ugly, and badly directed. I've heard nothing good about it, and the clips I've seen have confirmed those impressions.

Not him, and I think F/SN is better than Zero, but here's how it would work:

First of all, focus on all the Masters/Servants instead of solely Shirou/Rin. Show the summonings for each Servant, multiple conversations between each Master/Servant, etc. Basically like Zero where we saw each Master/Servant frequently.

Include all scenes we know that happened but weren't shown (Lancer/Bazett fighting Caster, Caster killing her Master, Bazett being attacked by Kirei, etc), and then add more for good measure. Also include stuff like Illya and Berserker fighting all the other Servants.

To really throw things up in the air, have it so Caster doesn't summon Assassin and instead a new Magi does. Or hell, maybe make it so Kirei decides to let Bazett do whatever and he doesn't attack her, so she stays in the war. Anything to add more experienced Magi into the mix.

And there you go, potentially Fate/Zero 2.0. It wouldn't be better than vanilla F/SN, but it still would have been fun to see.
