They were in a generic afterlife. The afterlife isn't real; it is a fake one created from people's beliefs, as there isn't actually a real god anywhere. Humanity is the only true god, and the alleged deities are only synthetic creations made to grant human wishes.
The fake afterlife, despite being fake, is real enough to do its job. Dead people go there, for real. There is just nothing beyond that, no deeper meanings. No higher purpose. Afterlife exists because humans demanded one, nothing more.

That's why I put "fake" in quotes. They are real in the sense that you can genuinely meet dead people there. They are however, fake, if one wishes to find higher meaning, greater purpose, or otherwise thinking they can get something when dead that they couldn't get while alive.

It is decently enough as an afterlife; it just isn't any more than that.
