Yes I do.
>>
I fucking love grain. You have no idea how fucking happy I get when I see grain. I think that people who artificially remove it should have their fingers cut off and be given lobotomies. Grain is love, grain is life.
>>
I don't particularly care for it nor do I fetishize it, but nevertheless if it's there, it's part of the picture, and trying to remove it usually results in a loss of detail.
>>
Only if it's natural.

It should usually reduce filesize to do that, since grain is up your bitrate significantly.

He does sometimes but not others, he's weirdly inconsistent. All the OZC releases of things that don't naturally have grain are fine though.

My main problem with OZC is the typesetting. The text is always too small to be comfortably read.

OZC is mainly for dubs, keep that in mind. Fortunate that he has a good release of SAC and Planetes, otherwise there wouldn't be much point
>>
>>118174968
I was just wondering because the last time i watched EoE I used his release, but I watched it on a shitty CRT monitor so I didn't notice a lack of grain.
>>
>>118175165
What about that is bait? Compare any OZC release to your average anime subs and you'll see that the text is quite a bit smaller. It's not a problem in itself, but it makes it easier to miss what's going on in the actual show because you're focusing on a smaller area to read the text, making your peripheral vision less useful.

That's because some Gunbuster episodes were shot on 16mm, some of 35mm, but probably all lower-end stock while Laputa would have been shot on more expensive 35mm.

Stock and technique make a difference: check out the technicolor 35mm movies from the 50s and 60s and compare to typical stuff from the 70s when technicolor fell out of favor. The grain is harsher and you don't have the wonderful breadth of color.

You would think, but they've ruined a lot of their films while some like Fox and the Hound and the Little Mermaid came out unscathed. I cannot understand their methodology.

They also DNRed all of their 50s classics, but because those were technical marvels, the DNR didn't need to be so harsh. I still wish they hadn't, I want to see Sleeping Beauty and Lady and the Tramp with all of that grain intact.

Not only was the process and film expensive, the cameras that shot Technicolor were extremely bulky and expensive, even by Hollywood camera standards. It was just such a hassle, that when studio execs that that people were still buying in to movies that weren't as saturated in color as the Technicolor, it fell out of favor.

Well, best looking complete release, anyway.

Yeah, it's fucking stupid that those got canceled, but I understand why they were. Guys like me had just finished buying all the Dragon Boxes and weren't ready to buy the entire series -again-. Dumbasses who bought the orange bricks went and bitched that there were black bars on the sides. So I'm sure sales were poor and that's why Funi had to shut it down.

I'd be psyched about a continuation of those sets but I really hate Funi's tendency to replace all the title cards in their shows. It'd be fine if the titles for DB / Z were the actual episode titles ... but they aren't.

They actually did a poll asking if the fans wanted the BDs to be 16:9 or maintain the original aspect ratio, and they overwhelmingly voted for 16:9. I've actually seen negative reviews for the DBZ and (excellent) YYH sets complaining about "lack of widescreen."

A lot of people think that Funi's survey was bullshit and they intended to do it 16:9 from the start because it's easier to 'clean up' 20% less of a frame. I kind of agree, since they never released any numbers.

If you have HD space, there's a complete set of ISOs floating around the torrents/usenet of the Dragon Ball Dragon Box with subtitles patched in. And a set of the Funi Dragon Box Z ISOs to go with that.

Otherwise, your only hope of Dragon Box encodes is the Utsukushii-Raws set of Dragon Ball (has subs), and the DBNL Dragon Box Z rip.

>>118178549
What do you mean by tampered and pussified? The Funi DVD sets are actually really good, they're uncensored and they didn't crop it to widescreen or anything. Only problem with it is the terrible white balance
>>
>>118178552
It's honestly one of the biggest fuckups in the history of fuckups. I'm shocked that the video engineer was like 'yeah looks good' and even more shocked that shit got through QC.
>>
>>118178738
That's a Dragon Box screencap anon. Funi's DB sets are slightly zoomed, yellowed, and DNR'd.

You are right about the white balance thing though. Toei did zero color correction on the DBox.
>>
>>118178662
Thanks.

>>118178738
Last I heard, they digitally removed shit like blood and all the sexual stuff from Dragon Ball.
>>
>>118178772

It's not like they were releasing 200 episodes at once, it was just 23 in that set.
>>
>>118178552
Any more of this?
>>
>>118178916
Nah, Funi hasn't done any censored DVDs since 1999. The dub does partially censor some dialogue though. They completely omit General Blue being gay.

Shit, you're right. I watched it before I knew anything about anything so I assumed it was a good release. Pic related, looks like shit.

Yeah, back when it was on TV. The DVD releases are uncut.

Funi seems to be working with a digibeta source for DB, which is why their DVDs look the way they do and there hasn't been a BD announcement yet. Z they have film scans for, which as you can see from up in the thread haven't been used very well either.

Whereas the Dragon Boxes for all three series were based on the original film. Funi needs to get their hands on more of those.

Here's a rant about it by a guy who actually remasters footage:

Sadly, lots of fans are going "Y-you guys are just entitled babies who like to whine! You're all just videophiles because us NORMAL people don't see anything wrong with it!"
>>
>>118179538
I never understood this. Someone told me I was picky because I said the DBZ orange bricks looked like ass. Sorry I don't support a shitty release, buddy.

>Straight from McDonald's mouth: "All I can tell you is that what you're seeing in terms of blended frames is not part of the post-production process."

>"We're like, video passion on steroids here! That's how addicted we are to getting the best possible imagery..." she continues on the ANNCast. "I don't think there's a lot of ground we can cover by pointing to this or that image and saying, this is the right image, that's the right image... I can tell you without a doubt that myself and ten videophiles sit with me, 20 hours a day, working on this material know, and are providing Charlene and our Neon Alley folks with the images that we have access to."

>"As a videophile yourself", Zac Bertschy asks, "Do you look at this and say: Okay, this is as good as this show can look?"

>"You know, my feeling about it is I'm really happy with what we did to it, based on what we had to work with. I'm thrilled with it... these issues don't trouble because I don't think they make the product in any way less - I know the love and care we put into it. So am I happy with it? I am happy with it... I'm completely over the moon with it, if you must know!"

>Zac later asks: "So fans who pre-ordered this set and get their copy in the mail. They aren't happy with the video quality. What do you suggest that they do?"

>Charlene has an answer on that front: "Of course we take all feedback very seriously, but that's... It's up to everyone to decide what they want to do with what they bought. Given - to echo Julie's point - given what we had to work with, that's how it was able to turn out with everyone working on it, so, we just don't have any news on that at this time."

The original show will probably not be that great since there was lots of QUALITY anyway, but holy shit EoE is gonna be the best BD ever if they pull it off right.

Yeah, you could tell Zac really wanted to press the issue harder and they wanted none of it. I mean shit, I thought it'd look awful just because it was an upscale of old ass masters and they were going crank up the contrast and wash out even more detail, who would have guess they'd have OTHER unrelated video issues on top of that.

So in other words, Viz got shit masters. Meanwhile French DVDs are fine and an actual JP BD in a few years will look like it should. We aught to be used to the NA market getting consistently dicked over like this.
>>
>>118180881

If that's the case, then how come everyone else in the world is getting a good video release except for the English-speaking countries? Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, etc. all managed to get the good masters from Toei, why was Viz unable to?

They've lied before about the quality of the JP DVD releases with their doctored screenshots, who's to say they didn't lie again?
>>
>>118180832
Still an improvement from the old asf files I got from WinMX. On a 14-inch screen you can't tell the difference -- being an ignorant 17 y/o didn't help matters.

Don't get me started on how much I paid for the last third of the show...

>from the totally unrelated position of some other good show
