The characterization in general is weirdly paced in this series. It’s all done in layers.

When a character appears, they're never quite what they seems to be and at the “incredible” speed of one tiny layer at a time do you learn more about his motivaition, his background and stuff like that. This works when the character is compelling from the start (Illya, Kirei, etc). It just doesn't work for Shirou.

Shirou as he is presented to us at the start has all the personality of a wet noodle. Instead of giving us a wholesome characterization from the start so we like him, and building on the character further with plot events, instead they present a seemingly bland character and then peels off the layers which makes understanding him not a matter of presentation but rather a matter of time.

Just take Taiga’s remarks about Shirou as a kid in the latest episode. It's a waste of time to wait so long to explore this character. Instead of actually making him a good character from the very beginning, we are forced to wait for him to become bearable. Even if he becomes really interesting in the end, you still have all those episodes where he wasn’t interesting and a plottwist-like revelation about the character isn’t worth it if that’s the price the series has to pay for that.

By the 9th episode of UBW I'm thinking "How about about we wrap things up and call it a day? We all know where this is going and frankly I prefer the destination to the journey here.”

The writing just isn’t very good. The conflict between Archer and Shirou for example, it basically always boils down to one saying “Hey, you’re wrong about this shit.” and the other one saying “No, you’re wrong!”. Then Archer has to add some ominous, mysterious remarks, of course, and that’s all there is to it.

Why didn't Archer just reveal himself right then and there at Ryuudo temple so he can reveal Shirou's ideals a shit and kill him?

Although that does bring up the question of why he didn't use it in Ciel's body, as well as the question that looms over the whole scenario of what made Roa dominant in the Near Side routes but SHIKI dominant in the Far Side.

According to /a/, "Kill off the main heroine before the start of the game, remove all cooking and anything else too SoL from Shirou's character, MoS is the only choice".

Honestly though, not too much. A lot of it would come across a lot easier than anyone assumes in an animated format. For example the cooking scenes in Ufotable UBW, no one even notices them despite still being there, it would be the same in HF animated.

I know everyone will be complaining when the movie does come either way, but a lot of it should flow pretty well even without any real change as long as they do it about as well as UBW. Most of the issues with HF won't be apparent when animated.
