Unlike the other routes, the sex scenes in HF don't feel forced. They have this uncomfortable sickly overtone to them that subconsciously sells you on this idea that everything that goes on in this version of the story is wrong somehow, even this romance with Sakura. They're cute and romantic in their own way, but they're also desperate and needy and animalistic and EDUCATED PROSTITUTE. They fit right in with everything else horrible that's happening, like Caster going nuts over Soichirou's death and True Assasin's Xenomorph birth through Koujirou's body and The Shadow murdering people. Even the "purest," of the HF sex scenes, Rider's dream, is so gratuitous and pornographic compared to the others that you can tell something is wrong... and Shirou in fact comments on something being wrong about it the second he wakes up.

Even the art of those sex scenes is way darker and uses a color scheme and angles that scream "corruption and darkness," which sharply contrasts with the warmth of purity of the yellows and silvers and pinks and blues the other sex scenes have.

One of the many reasons why it irks me when people call Nasu a shitty writer. There's a difference between bad WRITING and bad PROSE.

I think they both fit with Sakura's character, but the later makes her much more proactive and gives her more agency I think. When she kills Shinji to keep her rape secret, it's because she can't live without Shirou's love and approval and fears losing it. But if she kills Shinji to keep Shirou from sullying himself, it's because her perception of Shirou's purity, rather than Shirou himself, it what matters to her, which makes sense given how her torture warped her view of the world and forced her to become an unbreakable fortress of willpower.

That's a good change I think. Seems more interesting than Rape As Plot Device at least.

The weird thing is I didn't really mind it with Asagami Fujino in KnK. You find out about her backstory, and there's just an immediate visceral reaction of disgust at the people who raped her, and you sympathize with her when she goes on a killing spree. Your initial reaction to her horrific past experiences hasn't worn out yet by the time the movie ends, so Asagami comes out as a sympathetic tragic character.

I think the problem with HF is that it drags on too long considering what nasu was trying to do. I forget the exact day (7?) but you find out about the crest worm, and it's tragic and you feel sorry for her and angry at zouken/shinji (maybe at the other characters as well for not realizing), and there's a great moment where they embrace in the rain and shirou says he'll protect her. Then there's like 5 fucking days where Sakura does fuck all except lay in bed and act passive aggressive to people that are literally trying to save her life, and it just fucking grates on you because she doesn't seem to do anything to improve her own situation. You get to a point where you realize rape is not sufficient character development, and by that point whenever nasu repeatedly emphasizes how shitty her life is, you don't even care anymore. On the tragedy scale it goes way past the point of sympathy until it's so ludicrous it's almost hilarious.

So many people say this, and it's amazing how completely it misses the point. You're probably one of those people who thinks Mind of Steel is a good ending.

Shirou's ideals only have two possible endings other than death: either you harden your resolve so that you never give in to despair regardless of it being impossible (UBW) or you find the strength to give up on your dream and embrace an entirely new path (HF). Saying that Sakura was designing to engender sympathy and therefore is nothing but a plot device to cause that second path is nonsense because Shirou doesn't abandon his ideal out of sympathy for her circumstances, he does it because he loves her and he decides that her well-being is more important to him.

You might as well say that Archer is nothing but a plot device to lead to UBW's solution rather than a character.

It's funny, because that section actually made me really like Sakura the most. The stuff she says and her body language and such make it pretty obvious that she WANTS to help herself. She continually suggests things that Rin and Shirou shoot down because it will irritate the worms and worsen her condition or give Zouken cause to do something that will fuck everything over. The reason she acts passive-aggresive toward Rin and Illya is because she's frustrated, as I think we all would be, at how powerless her circumstances make her and jealous of the fact that they get to work and fight with Shirou to save her when she wants to be doing that herself.

There's this one scene in that stretch of days near the start when Illya and Rin set foot in the house for the first time. Previously when Sakura was around them she kept up her muggle facade pretending she didn't know what was going on or acted meek and submissive because that's what was proper. But this time she's been exposed as a Mage and her status as Rider's master has been reinstated... and so she marks her fucking territory. Despite everything, she is in some way part of the Matou family and a powerful magus, and when she's confronted by the masters of Tohsaka and Einzbern she stands up expecting to be treated as an equal and holds her ground until Shirou tells everyone to calm the fuck down.

It changed how I perceived Sakura a lot. She's clearly got the DRIVE to be proactive and strong and fight for her own freedom and happiness. She just can't at that time, and that's a crushing burden that's easy to relate to. That feeling as much as anything else is probably what helped her dark side come out.

Part of the reason I think Ufotable picked UBW over any other route is due to the fact that Zero spoils the least out of it. I mean you do a Fate or Heaven's Feel adaptation, and you've basically got a bunch of characters trying to find answers to questions that were practically footnotes in the previous anime. I mean Illya being Shirou's sister is a solid reveal in the novel, but it's covered in like, the first 30 seconds of Zero.

I think that's a good guess. You can also say things like, DEEN already gave Fate a series, and that the UBW movies didn't give UBW enough justice and what not, but I think UBW is what fits best following up Zero, as well. I watched the old 2006 FSN and when I searched for an explanation for the ending (Why Saber couldn't stay with Shirou), I was overwhelmed with how much stuff there was. This was during TYPE-MOON FES. Went ahead and watched the prequel and was hooked onto this. Didn't know about the VN so I read it after Saber runs at Caster in F/Z.

Can't believe I watched all of that, read the VN, Tsukihime and Kagestu Tohya in a month.

I'm still here waiting for Mahou Tsukai no Yoru to finally conclude my wild ride, I guess.
