In the slice of life genre, has-anything come close or beaten

I thought Yuru Yuri came close, but Azumanga Daioh has something special about it.

The scene where Osaka has a dream where she accidentally kills Chiyo by removing her pigtails and then flies away was actually the first thing I ever saw from an anime (except obviously Sailor Moon, DBZ and Pokemon that everyone saw as kids), many years ago now. I remember thinking it was absolutely hilarious and watching the entire series in two or three nights.

Some of the jokes may go on too long for some people's taste. It's one of the reasons I would suggest the manga a bit more readily. You can read that as fast or slow as you like. Hell, that's part of the reason Azuma's hesitant to make a Y! anime.

Yuyushiki is the only thing in recent years that's felt anywhere close, but even it has it's own thing.

I find Azumanga Daioh to be really special because of the context needed to appreciate its clever jokes and the balance of comedy and heartwarming moments. I see the series as a celebration of childhood in which the characters are naturally allowed to act themselves and not as performers for the audience, their peculiarities just make it hilarious unbeknownst to them who see themselves as perfectly normal. The show gives each character an episode dedicated to themselves effective changing the wavelength of that particular episode. I still wouldn't put it on par with certain SOL series like YKK.

As much as I love SoL, and not minding "boring" series. I felt that Azumanga Daioh fell flat trying to keep my attention.

They definitely had great moments that were laugh out loud enjoyable, as well as having a diverse and rich cast despite all being high school girls/teachers. But what went wrong was the moments that lasted lifetimes, cuts were shown too long and silence happened a whole bunch.

I understand that was part of the comedy they were presented, I just didn't find it humorous especially when it was being fanatically weird other times.

I felt the same sort of boredom with Ichigo Mashimaro. They were both comfy, but there were times where I was multi-tasking from trying to keep myself from being bored.

For Comedy-related SoL it's either Nichijou or Nichibros. Very close and I just can't decide.

I'd have to say "no", based on the SoL's that I'm aware of. It's not that there aren't other SoL's that are as entertaining if not even moreso than AD. And depending on your definition of SoL, it could cover a lot of ground, including stuff like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Even the recent Sabagebu!

But AD has just that right mixture of moe, meaness/teasing, and mindfuckery that no other series comes to mind as QUITE matching.

It's that unique mixture and going places that other series seem to fear treading. Other SoL tend to be too "safe". Or even if they incorporate "meaness" into their "moe", they lack the mindfuckery.

Ichigo Mashimaro had moe and meaness, but lacked mindfuckery. Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei lacked the moe. Sabagebu! lacked moe and mindfuckery. Nichijou lacked meaness. Both K-On and Lucky Star were "safe". Working, Ika Musume, Minami-ke and Busou Shinki again, lack mindfucking.

It's not that none of the above aren't good or great. It's just that Azumanga scores high in most categories while the others cover fewer categories. Perhaps shows like Sabagebu! exceed AD in terms of having action sequences though. AD's pretty light in that category.

To be fair, those were probably comedic beats. Which may or may not jive with everyone. Everyone's got a different perception of time/timing in that regard. If their "timing" jived with you, it enhances the moment. If not, then it falls flat.

Why do people watch slice of life

The only SoL genre I have ever watched is K-On
Finished 2 seasons and I'm still not sure why I watched it

As someone who's only read the manga I can't comprehend how most people think of the anime when they think of azumanga

I've watched some scenes on youtube and it doesn't, it just can't, capture what made reading it so funny to me. There's no way it can translate.
