The main events of UC are covered in the shows:
0079 > Zeta > ZZ > CCA

All the OVAs (including Unicorn) are essentially side stories that take place during/between those shows and don't affect the main plot no matter how contrived some of their circumstances can seem.

If they had even one episode to flesh out their romance it wouldn't have felt like the worst case of puppy love in UC. Either that or label them under Newtype Attraction; that's how all the other Gundam protags justify their hormonally overcharged bad decisions. Neither of them were Newtypes, though.

In the show they're assembled from slightly altered spare parts from the development of the gundam. Because of this there aren't actually spare parts available to repair damaged units, and you get things like the Ez-8 from them being repaired with parts for the mass produced GMs.

Outside the show, they wanted to do a Gundam OVA about grunts, but you can't have a new Gundam OVA without a new Gundam design in it.
