Ghost Hound did well for around half the series. Then turned to shonenshit special power show for kids.

Perfext blue did well for psycho horror, but noone remembers it existed nowdays.

Kids focus on Higurashi or OP's series - its accesible, easy to watch and gory in a C-class movie way.

I think that anime cant do well in horror due to infantile watcher base. The shows that tend to go into "horror" focus on gorefests for some teenage boys instead of complex stuff that the genere sometimes delivers when it comes to 3dpd movies.

I fail to see a series that would not turn to utter shit after a good start, its just impossible to do good and fulfill watcherbase expectations at the same time.

TRUE horror is only extremely rarely pulled off, since we're mostly immune to shock value as a society at this point. There aren't really any more barriers to be broken, so most just resort to jump scares, gross-out shit, or just plain not taking themselves seriously.

Real horror is best achieved when there's a legitimate sense of immersion and autonomy in progressing through the story, which is honestly a bit easier to achieve with certain video games or novels.

Lain was a fun show with nice art, good music, and computers. It really brought me to back in the day with computers; all that configuration, shit not working, noise everywhere, and shit being outdated in months.
I only watched SSY for the world-building and edgy shit. I thought it was more political than anything else.
Jigoku Shoujo was more boring than Kyuuketsuhime Miyu. I didn't know such a thing was possible.
Perfect Blue was fun but I wasn't in any way scared.

Generally, true horror can't be pulled of in anime because of its episodic format. As >>117443217 pointed out, it needs buildup and immersion, which can be done in anime, but not as a genre, rather single moments of chills down the spine. One that comes to mind would be when K kills himself in in Kokoro.

"horror" is pretty hard to convey, best you can hope for is an intimidating "thriller"

Not exactly anime, but Ever17 and Remember11 had some good moments of existential horror. Saya no Uta is another obvious choice. And Muv-Luv had its moments. I think the VN medium is very suited to horror stuff. It might be because it requires direct interaction from the person playing and usually assumes a first person perspective.

It usually fails to make things creepy. To delve into the uncanny valley from the right side instead from the left.

Psychological horror on the other hand can work. But writers often fail to realize the potential, doing very creepy things but give it all a lighthearted atmosphere that doesn't make you dwell on it.


Consider the following scenario

What a lighthearted show will do:

What a show going for drama will do:

I disagree. I just think people get too hung up on monsters and ghasts and ghouls and other unscary halloween bs. Horror isn't about sight so much as anticipation and implication. Anime has an especially hard time with this since you cant really sell a horror that you cant see, or at least not see often. Also good characterization helps, but its rare for anime (or pretty much anything else) to avoid common cliches and tropes that make any tension comical and "serves you right".
