I thought it was more about the how someone's sexual images and fantasies can actually ruin relationships in real life.

I think he was worried about not being a good enough mature adult, so he broke up with his girlfriend out of insecurity. It seemed to hurt him as much as it hurt her during the break up scene, so I think it was more rooted in his worries of everything falling out from under him, and he broke up with her to avoid that sort of rejection.
