Well, there was the second impact and Yui's death, there is also whatever made her ageless.
Furthermore, I do think in Rebuild she is a more serious person than she looks, I don't think the genki is fake but in 2.0 there are multiple scenes were she looks so oddly serious, when she stands up after she lands on Shinji (You need the animation cell to see it properly since she has that shiny glasses effect over her) when she looks to the birds, when she loses the battle against Zeruel and finally when she is meeting the Rei clones.

Hahaha, no. Mari is told outright she stands no chance against fucking Gendo, she does confess anyway but Yui just brushes her hair and in the end Mari says that even when she moves to England she will pray for her and gendo's happiness.

Even worse is the fact that Yui made Mari's hair into twintails to tease her, yet the girl kept them forever, makes Mari look like a cute version of Fuyutsuki (The difference being the fact that Mari had the courage to confess)

This made me rethink a little actually

First, I do think Mari being older was planned, on the CRC Anno says specifically that he made her sing that old song and do a series of "old man's" stuff to give her a "Showa-era old man" feel. That along with all that maturity talk and her age never being revealed makes me think this was a planned move.

Now, about the face in particular, it happens right after Rei saves Mari from dying in the explosion (Mari herself mentions that) and after Zeruel "consumes" Rei. I think this links with her backstory.
