He was as good a father as anyone of his race could have been. Even with all the weird circumstances, his sons turned out just fine.

If we're comparing him to the prince of all saiyans, he's outright terrible.

He respected Gohan quite a bit and probably taught him almost everything he knew in their Hyperbolic Time Chamber run. And even when he squandered that a bit he still believed in him and has his back.

He didn't put him through school or anything but hell he gave him what he could.

If you ignore the fact that Vegeta allowed Dr. Gero to use his mate and baby Trunks as a distraction to escape, along with all Vegeta making a point to not only allow Trunks to do shitty training in the RoSaT, but actually beat Trunks up and allowed Cell to become perfect, knowing full well that Cell not only kills his son, in a different timeline, but used said son's time-machine to ride back to the current timeline to start all the shit that he did.

That Vegeta cries after future Trunks dies, but STILL completely neglect kid Trunks for the seven years after Cell's defeat, so he could concentrate on surpassing SSJ2 Kid Gohan, after swearing never to fight again, makes him heads and shoulders a shitter parent than Goku.

Only King Vegeta is a worse parent.

Because people love to parrot misinformation forever, regardless of the actual facts.

As a father, Goku did a damn good job with Gohan solely due to the fact that he completely accepted Gohan for his he was and encouraged him to follow his own path, even if Gohan himself had a shitload of potential as a fighter.

Until forced, Goku pretty much let Gohan do what he wanted--where Gohan took a real interest in sparring through the time he spent with Piccolo, along with his own admiration for his father.

Goku had to get stronger to protect the planet against more powerful foes than the one that cost him his life. He treated with Piccolo to take on that foe and put trust in him to shape Gohan up, because his son had extraordinary potential that could prove useful in that fight against those foes.

And he spend ten years with his family before leaving with Uub. By then, Goten was in his late teens. It's Goku being Goku, but it was not like he was untraceable and the family wasn't well off.

Vegeta let Trunks dick around in the gravity chamber. There was no real training, until AFTER Vegeta finds out both Goten and Trunks can turn Super Saiyan.

It's because Chichi taught Goten how to fight, that Goten and Trunks were interested in training at all and turned sparring each other into a game.

That Vegeta himself admits later, before going to fight Majin Buu, that he regrets neglecting his family to train is all you need to see how much of a shitter Vegeta was as a dad.

At least Goku could use the excuse that he was training to protect the planet, by the Buu saga, Vegeta was just training for the sake of getting away from his boring life.

Of those faults, about the only thing you could excuse is leaving Bulma and baby Trunks to die.. If only because Vegeta himself had not only resolved to become Super Saiyan, but abandoned Bulma and baby Trunks to finish his training. He flat out states that he doesn't give a shit about either of them (to future Trunks, no less) and Bulma infers there was never any real discussion of them being a family nor does the future version of herself imply that her and Vegeta ever reconciled.

Like everything else in her life, Bulma took getting knocked up by Vegeta in stride, without any real thought to if they'd stay together. I mean, it's not like she was hurting for money.

That said, she still reassured future Trunks that his father was a good person, but she never inferred that they were anything more than a fling.

The fact that Vegeta's and Bulma's relationship is so strong, post-Cell, along with kid Trunks even having a dad, is entirely because of future Trunks' experiences with Vegeta.

Goku is the greatest role model.
