The height is an anime thing. In the manga Atem is just as short as Yugi. He even gets cut out of some panels that focus on the other characters because of his height. Also Atem was really young when he died, about Yugi's age or even younger. He wasn't much older than 18.

Atem's voice is deeper and more confident in the JP version but the differences were exaggerated in the dub.

They changed a lot of stuff. A lot of the Penalty Games are different for one, sometimes randomly so. A character who played a very minor role in one chapter of the manga is now a major character--I guess because there weren't enough girls otherwise. Some chapters are adapted in different orders.

I still had fun watching it but it's not very good.

The rules in season 1 were so dumb. Like why would any ever use monsters with like 700 attack points when you can use 6 star+ monsters with like 2500+ attack points. I never got that, it was ridiculous. Also how are you supposed to win when you can't attack life points directly unless the opponent goes full derp. I know it hadn't been too thought out yet but these aren't really obscure flaws.

DM was still an adaptation of a manga back then and Takahashi was using the game as a means to the plot and not the actual plot so he didn't really think about that kind of stuff.

In reality there should never have been any cards lower than 4 stars in anybody's deck

Powerful monsters are SUPPOSED to be rare. Yugi's Summoned Skull is said to be extremely rare in the early manga, and of course, there are only four Blue Eyes. I think the explanation was not everybody could get lucky or afford to get the powerful cards, so relatively normal people get stuck with shit like the Horned Imp at best. But the early game was extremely flawed, Takashi just based it off his scattered memories of MtG and called it a day. It wasn't meant to become such a major thing.

It was a totally different concept. It was people being dicks to Yugi or his friends and Atem punishing them for it. The themes of sin, punishment, and atonement were strong, and eventually, Atem himself stops going full overkill with the Penalty Games. But the card game got popular and the author was pressured to keep on with the card game and that did kind of take everything over.

I really do recommend going back and reading the final arc. Millenium arc the best. As for art style, hmm, not sure if it was better (it was pretty unpolished) but I feel like it had a lot more charm. It was kind of bad in some places but I still liked it. Some redesigns aren't as good as the initial designs, like Yugi's hair.

Personally I don't think you can really rank the YGO series. Each one has some kind of bullshit that stops it from being consistently good

DM-When it is adapting the manga arcs, it's great, when its not, it's doing these bullshit arcs that are full of generic bad guy things and established tropes that have nothing to do with the plot and nobody likes them

GX-Hates its secondary cast but keeps adding more and more while focusing almost completely on the protagonist and has very long stretches of nothing happening. If it had been a full SoL it would have been better for it honestly
