So here's a question, how popular is Mach GoGoGoin Japan? I've always kind of figured it's not as important or culturally memorable to them as Speed Racer was to North America. I know it's kind of a legacy being part of Tatsunoko and it got a recent shout out in Yattaman, but otherwise it doesn't seem to come up much anymore.

The 90's series was pretty rad, but I think that's the last real time Japan had any love for Mach GoGoGo, whereas Speed Racer went down in pop culture largely due to timing and localization.
>>
Were all shows from this era animated in such a blatantly cost effective manner?
>>
I kind of feel that Akira is the same way. Probably not to the same extent. But for what reason do they have to place it on a pedestal?
>>
>>116796413
>Cost effective animation
Welcome to nearly all Japanese animation ever.
>>

Casuals need something to latch on to.
We have normal people here who have only watched miyazaki films, I'm sure they have their Studio Ghibli.
>>
>>116796246
Speed Racer, Go Lion, FLCL and Panty & Stocking are all animes that are way more popular to American audiences and are either forgotten or flopped in Japan

Akira, GitS (first movie), Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and the first FMA anime are similar examples but not to the same degree.

But to answer OP's question: the live action Speed Racer movie was released in Japan without even changing the American title or character names.
>>
>>116796246
>While Speed Racer is considered a pop-culture classic in America, it is barely remembered in its native country of Japan (where it was titled Mach GoGoGo) and is only known nowadays for being popular in America. In fact, the Japanese dub of the live-action film kept the American title and names of the characters.
>>
You have to admit that Mach GoGoGo is a pretty stupid sounding name.
>>
here HE comes here comes speed racer, HE's a demon on wheels
>>
>>116797202
It's catchy if you pronounce it MAHHA GO GO GO like in the theme song.
>>
> THE CAR ACROBATICS TEAM

Shit was glorious.
>>
>>116797232
I feel sorry for that no name driver Speed killed in the opening
>>
Is this question related to the fact there are rips of the manga available online now?
>>
>>116797202
It's a triple pun. Go and in gottagofast, go being the Japanese word for five, and the main character's name being Go Mifune.
>>
>>116797400
Are there really?
>>
>>116797467
Well I can find them on ComicBT. I monitor manga shit on there sometimes. I can probably reupp for someone else.

I wonder if japan laughs at us for enjoying their bargain basement garbage shows.
>>
>>116797364
Man, as a kid I remember them not being squeamish about killing people on Speed Racer. Even if they tried to cover a few deaths here and there, they still didn't pull punches what with cars going over cliffs and such.

It wasn't like Voltron where they out of their way to try and sweep away any death they could.
>>
>>116797620
Probably not. I don't think Mach Go Go Go was all that cheap either considering it was in color.

The Japanese just weren't that interested in racing back then.
>>
On the subject of Speed Racer, it really bugs me that every reboot or revival of Speed Racer thinks they need to "do better" than the Mach 5 and replace it with their own Mach 6. The movie did it, a few comics did it, that shittacular low budget sequel cartoon did it, it always come off feeling like the car equivalent of an ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEEL. It's like, why bother trying to revive Speed Racer if you're only going to do so by shitting on one of it's key elements?

>>
>>116798513
Did the Japanese remake do this?
>>
>>116798569
Are you my brother?
>>
>>116799003
No, never. The 90's series had a newer Mach 5 with more gadgets, but it was still the Mach 5. They didn't blow it up for no raisin and say "lol oh well who cares here's the totally better MACH 420 BLAZE IT"
>>
All I'll say is that the only good thing about the Hollywood adaptation is that Racer X has a less retarded design.
>>
>>116799252
Shit. I better watch it.

I actually rather liked the remakes old Tatsunoko properties got in the 90s.
>>
>>116799252
That may be because there was already a lot changes in the 90s series from the original. And also because the punny title wouldn't make sense without a Mach 5.
>>
>>116796487
Eh, AKIRA was one of the biggest hits ever in Japan.
Cultural significance is debatable, but you can't really deny its massive influence on sci-fi genre. Even to this day Ootomo is revered by sci-fi artists and writers all over Japan.
>>
>>116799252
>>116798513
I feel like even if the movie did this, they lampshade it with Pops coming in and saying "what's all this bullshit you added to it, you fucked up the design, you've thrown off the weight distribution, now it handles like shit" and he has to unfuck it
>>
>>116802400
Otomo, yeah, but Akira? From what I can tell Domu is much up there. Lots of mangaka cite him as influence, but I don't think I've ever heard it as just Akira or at all.
>>
>>116802400
Yeah, it's not so much Akira's as Otomo's influence that was huge in Japan. His earlier short stories and Doumu, the psychic girl manga gave much more impact on the culture scene. So much so that there's even a word "Post Otomo generation".
>>
>>116803678
You can really tell when some people are influenced by Otomo. Just recently I was having a discussion about Kon's manga and there was other manga that reminded me of him. But that's all Otomo. Akira is actually pretty standalone in my opinion, different than his other works and personally the manga is his least remarkable. I love his oneshots and parodies.
>>
>>116803780
Akira was a Naruto Otomo version. Entertaining but lacks his trade mark dry humour. It's a shame he stopped drawing manga. (Otomo and Shirou Masamune...)
>>
>>116803907
>his trade mark dry humour
Which I would've never known about until the scanlation community picked up his stuff sort of recently doing his oneshots. Hansel and Gretel is fucking amazing. He did a oneshot sort of recently I remember. But yeah, it is a shame.
>>
>>116799092
>What anon doesn't know is that anon X is his brother, anonx, who ran away from home all those years ago!
>>
>>116803907
>Shirou Masamune
I got more of the impression that people viewed him as a hack. I wouldn't actually know though.
>>
>>116806764
Isn't he still doing those porn books?
>>
>>116806764
He is a complete hack now. But Gits manga volume 1 is still a miracle which happened in this not so short sci-fi history. It was in a sense better than Akira.
>>
>>116806830
I think so. A whole bunch of CGI crap.
>>
>>116797720
>It wasn't like Voltron where they out of their way to try and sweep away any death they could.

What deaths? They only battled robots, ne?
>>
Actually, I think Harmageddon was considered a bigger cultural impact in Japan than Akira. The only reason Harmageddon wasn't well remembered in the U.S. was it was released 10 years too late so it looks dated. Plus its depiction of black people in NYC was less than positive,

Get ready for a long stretches of boredom with a few moments of cool animations. It's NARMY as fuck though, at cringe inducing levels. Especially all the world stereotype characters.
>>
>>116805733
Take a shot every time they stop to explain this.
>>
I only just recently learned Peter Fernandez, the original voice of Speed Racer died in 2010. Man, I grew up watching Speed Racer, that is a huge bummer.

And to think, the last thing he did was cameo on that horrendous flash cartoon that was supposed to be a "sequel" to Speed Racer.

Japan alson don't give a fuck about the best Metal Hero.
>>
>>116798513
I remember reading this one Speed Racer manga a while ago, it came out around the same time as the live movie but it wasn't a tie in to the movie. And they did the same thing with trying to replace the Mach 5 with a Mach 6, only they kinda reversed it by having Speed not like the Mach 6 much for one, and then the Mach 6 gets stolen by some dead racer who was brought back to life as an evil cyborg, and he uses it to attack people and do evil shit I guess, and Speed has to defeat the Mach 6 using the Mach 5.

It was honestly the only Speed Racer manga or comic I've ever read besides the original that genuinely felt like Speed Racer.

Giant robot anime is notorious for mass civilian deaths.

Dexter's Lab is best Speed Racer.

Akira was THE SHIT in Japan when it was being serialized.
