What makes Tsukihime better than FSN is the atmosphere, you can feel the danger, the drama, the mindfuck. The music does a better job to add to the atmosphere than FSN. The characters interactions are so superior to the character interactions of FSN that it hurts, and the slice of life segments and Shirou's point of view is fucking annoying. FSN plot is too forced at times, some times they lead to plot holes,weak plot or unexplainable developments. Tsukihime's plot flows better, it's simple and credible.
Tsukihime's plot is also more mature, each resolution have more weight to them 1) Arc and Shiki didn't end up in good terms in Ciel's True End, 2) After every single of the Far Side of the Moon routes, Arc and Ciel will keep hunting Roa, 3) Akiha ends up as a doll in one ending, 4) Akiha and Kohaku die in another end, 5) Hisui's Good End wasn't precisely happy. In F/sn, only 2 characters couldn't be saved: 1) Ilya in UBW, 2) Saber and Ilya in HF.
Shirou never actually shows his resolve when it comes to deal with people who are prepared to kill,and the story does not have serious and mature Masters - aside from Zouken and the only time Shirou had to confront one of his friends, was in HF against Black Saber. Shiki, on the other hand, had to fight Arc, Ciel, Akiha, and Satsuki at some point - there's also the point when he realises all what Kohaku has been doing. FSN is just too light and aimed at teenagers. That why the dark and cold as ice Tsukihime is superior.

As for Ciel, I think her design definitely improved but as I've said once before I think her face just looks messy now, especially in comparison with everybody else's. I'm okay with her bangs being longer, but now her glasses just look worse than the original. I always thought she looked better without them, though, so maybe that's it.

Saber and Arc (as well as Ryougi and Aoko to a lesser extent) mainly get votes because of that very same reason: they act as mascots for their series. Similarly, Rider only got as high as he did because Zero was all the rage at the time, and Rin and Archer get advertised nearly as much as Saber.

Sakura, on the other hand, often gets left out of advertising and spinoffs (the same happened to Kohaku, who has even beaten Arcueid at times, so don't try to claim it's because she's not popular. Fate's got a LOT more in side character content than Tsukihime, though.
We've got Kotomine, Kuzuki, Taiga, Ilya, Lancer Archer, etc.
In Tsukihime they don't factor into the plot as much. Arihiko is kind of pointless, Yumizuka even more so, Nrvqsr died too early, and Roa is Ciel. Were there any other characters that weren't hero or heroine?

Finally working up the courage to walk with you home and trying to raise her own flag in life, a twist of Fate destroys her hopes as she becomes more of a tragic character, scene in the park as Shiki keeps trying to reach out but even if she wants to go with him she's just too strange by nature due to the impulses to know how to go along anymore, scene where he decides to knife her in the back while crying as she just apologizes for making him have to do it.

The entire back-alley scene in Akiha's route alone was one of the stronger moments in the game. She was always powerful as that ill fortunate sort of person, a normal girl with a normal wish who was just cock-blocked by some twist of fate.

This is one of those ironic hipster threads, right? Tsukihime was far more amateurish than F/SN and of much lower quality, and the characters aren't terribly memorable in any fashion. Nasu's writing was also about three times as grating and often outright painful to read. FS/N is hardly Shakespeare but it's a significant up in quality from Tsukihime.

I don't know about that. I like the heroines in Tsukihime more than Fate overall, and Fate felt really annoying to read in some places - particularly in several action scenes. So much time spent reading about how absolutely painful doing just about anything was for Shirou in any given route.

This isn't nostalgia at work, by the by - I read Tsukihime for the first time about two weeks ago, and read Fate/Stay Night over half a decade back. I actually went into Tsukihime with the mindset that it'd be underwhelming and that people were overhyping it to be hip, as you said.

I'm not saying Tsukihime is far and away better than Fate, either. Both stories have their strengths, and it's easy to see why Fate's become the more famous and widespread franchise.
