But the only time you should experience any drama like that is because you weren't working hard enough. If somebody steals your project because you haven't touched it in months, that's your fault. If somebody tries to steal your project when you put out 5 chapters a week, then they're retarded and are wasting their time when they could be working elsewhere.

I've been "group 2" in this exact situation. In my defence group 1 had the thing on a 3-4 month hiatus after two chapters at that point (and effectively left the scene regardless a few weeks later, deleting their site and lots of releases) and I did somehow complete the thing in about a year taking a couple of hiatuses of my own.

Still, I feel bad for stealing a project even now (I didn't even plan to "steal", I was just making temporary tl for anons), but I'm trying to justify myself by thinking that it would have probably stayed untranslated to this day.

If there are scanlations of something, the Chinese will be scanlating it as well, and most likely be up to date.

I DISTINCTLY remember that for Mahou Sensei Negima, the only scanlation group that were putting out the chapters regularly for a while were all doing it from the Chinese scanlation group that were putting out chapters almost within a day of release (and doing a fineass quality job too).

Basically, you get the text from reading another scanlation group's work or somebody who scanned the official Chinese release, and you just use Japanese raws for typesetting, cleaning and release. Or in the case of the Negima example, using the Chinese scanlations for both.

Depends where you are in the UK, really. Living in the north east, I hear 'mam' more than either (probably down to 19th century Irish migration), but write mum. Mom and mum aren't different when you filter it through regional dialects.

As for writing it, 'mum' is certainly the standard.

In any case, it comes over as pretty fucking stupid to translate anything Japanese into 'mum', because it just makes me think the character has a British accent.

That happened to me a few times. I didn't bitch about it and the other groups were not fast at all. I just moved on to another series. Though it was disappointing to see the other groups stall and eventually drop the series.
