What's the best manga you've read? Best, not favourite.
The way you can see that something is objectively good but it might not be the thing you'd go back to.
For instance, your favourite movie might be South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut but the best movie you've seen is The Godfather.
Not OP, but I can really like a bad anime, and can also recognize a great anime but just not like it as much as something I would call not as good. I would say that Giant Robo is the best OVA I've seen but Gunbuster is my favorite by far
Monster is better in my opinion
Recently finished that series. I loved it and all, but best? It was legitimately great from the beginning, but around half way point the story gradually became shittier and the fucker kept adding too much shit in instead of resolving things. Last part's writing was pretty bad and 21CB was god awful. Still a must read though.
This is some sort of mental disorder.
There's no such thing as "objectively good" or whatever vague bullshit you like to use.
It's all fucking opinions, what is good and what is not, based on how do you enjoy something or not, even if you will put some criteria for what good is supposed to be, it's still a fucking opinion.
Favorite=best, because that's what people enjoy more then anything else, not because it's supposed to be objectively good or whatever.
Also, different things have different values, you can't compare something like adventure/action movie with thriller and call one of the "best" as if it's actually being better than another, which is why there's no fucking thing as best manga/best movie or whatever, fucking opinions, all of it.
Definitely this. And I'm hardly a ghiblifag.
Anyways, Nijigahara Holograph.
For such a silly premise, the writing was too powerful.
Pic related is one of the best and favourite.
By the way:
>Best, not favourite.
This is stupid.
The amount of "objectivity" in judging something is there, but it's very limited.
But if you recommend people you try to recommend them something which is as "objectively" good as it gets. I know this is completly stupid, but some people
like mecan actually non-ironically enjoy a show, which they know has very flawed writing If someone new would visit /a/ for the first time they'd think such people do not exist and apparently almost every show this imperfect writing is shit. For example I like Mirai Nikki, because I found it entertaining, but It'd never even cross my mind that it's flawless, because let's be honest, it's flawed as fuck.
I think OP is asking for a manga with good/thoughtful writing and specifically tries to avoid people mentioning mangas they found "entertaining".
I'm seconding The World is Mine. Everyone should read it.
Aria is for escapists. YKK is for real men.
I haven't read 20th century boys but /a/ also thinks Monster is overrated, partly because it's too popular and /a/ is contrarian by nature but also because the pacing is so drawn out as if Urasawa was writing for 6 seasons of a TV adaptation of something and that cheapens it somewhat.
Pluto doesn't feel that way.
Lone Wolf and Cub. Worth every fucking page read. If you never read it take some time and do it.
this is in my "objective" top 5 list.
no I didn't put it in there just so I can say I read something 'underground'
Or just about anything else by Ikeda. Those page layouts are so good.
There's little value to some idea of "objective" quality. And when you make that sort of call it still comes down on some level to some subjective judgment.
What is the Finnegan's Wake of manga?
What is The Brothers Karamazov of manga?
What is the Infinite Jest of manga?
What is the War and Peace of manga?
Besides the shaky translations on the earlier volumes, I think it's a masterpiece. My favorite sports manga too.
It totally does. You just don't know shit about manga.
The whole process serialization makes manga a shit medium for art compared to books, not that books are completely immune to those of course. But the mangaka is at the behest of the manchildren readers every week.
You call that bait?
You're a 1000 years to early to challenge me kid
He's right, in a way, but just about any other artistic medium suffers from the same issues, although perhaps to a lesser degree.
Doesn't mean there aren't any interesting manga out there.
Of course. Whether or not something is art isn't really the question to be asking.
>What is the Finnegan's Wake of manga?
>What is The Brothers Karamazov of manga?
The Heart of Thomas
>What is the Infinite Jest of manga?
>What is the War and Peace of manga?
The Ravages of Time
though it's chinese
Seriously. You don't know shit about manga. There are plenty.
Porn and cooking yes, I mean you have some sense of direction while filming porn as stupid as it may sound and you want to print a feel on the audience.
Cooking does the same as well, much like esculture and drawing.
They might not be considered fine arts but there's some artistic sense to both of them.
The theory of relativity (science) is not art, because, well, it's science.
I don't know why should we glue ourselves to the western and elititst view on what is art, at the end of the day any kind of expression is art of itself.
I don't like that term either and never use it but I'd prefer it to be used elitist so that it at least has some meaning.
I just looked it up at least in the juristic sense porn isn't art.
>I just looked it up at least in the juristic sense porn isn't art.
In that case you have to deal with the gray area that things like this fall into.
20CB wasn't really that good though, Urasawa's great, but 20CB fell apart a lot, didn't need ESP, the stupid VR simulation shit, a second Friend, or original MC coming back to life as an obnoxious hippy.
No you fucking retard.
I'll make things as simple and clear so that everyone can understand :
You cannot be objective, it's impossible. But you can have a subjective opinion of something's artistic worth, value, quality etc, regardless of your own personal enjoyement of it.
I personally disliked haibane renmei, especially the end, but I think, based of my own criteria and subjective opinion of what makes a good anime, that it's a very good anime with only flaw it's overly dramatic ending. Get it?
TL : DR
>opinion of something in general can be different regardless of how much you enjoyed said thing
