I just watched the movie.

Why did they do this to my Homu? I just wanted an innocent 14-year-old magical girl waifu, not this selfish monster.

Will they give me a refund on my Homura figure?

To be fair, I thougth it was a nice movie. Homura just suffered to the point of snapping at the object of her desires. But I feel like she wished to end the cycle without making herlsef a demon and betraying the wishes of Madoka. That actually hunts her. While she managed to bring down kyubey madoka will eventually remember and blame her although it wasn't her fault.

Is the movie canon?

It doesn't have to be canon, right?

Homura's just a normal magical girl, shooting her bow, being great friends with Kyouko and Mami, and keeping a vague feeling called "Madoka" in her heart. Some day she'll die a normal, magical-girl-related death, and will go to be with Madoka who she will remember as her very best friend. Homura would never do anything evil, right?

What we see at the end isn't love. It's a stupid yandere forcing her fantasy. Madoka came to her and outright said hey, come be with me. We're together now. And Homura basically told her no, you're not good enough the way you are. I want you the way I remember meeting you. I wanna live out a fantasy of meeting you for the first time again instead of actually loving you.

Doesn't matter because it's not the real Homura, this shitty movie isn't canon.

But I'm not that sure anymore, as this was a Madoka that never was a meguka, and thus may see things from a simpler point of view, not the POV of a PSTD battle hardened mahou shoujo.

>>113839439
An incomplete Madoka living in Homura's labyrinth said that, it carries about as much weight as Mami saying she wouldn't have been strong enough to carry on being a magical girl if she were alone. When a fully realised Godoka chats with Homura in ep 12 she assures her that she's not alone nor cut off from everyone and that one day day they will get to meet again. Homura's actions at the end of Rebellion are born from her misunderstanding what becoming a Goddess really means for Madoka and selfishly not wanting to move beyond life as a 14 year old with her besty in highschool.

Tho, I'd wonder if Madoka is really happy as a goddess. Everything ended well. Sayaka gets a second chance at life. Mami and Kyouko aren't alone anymore. Homura finally achieved the victory she spent years of her life fighting for, and Madoka gets to have her cake and eat it too. All of their horrible memories have been wiped away. Ignorance truly is bliss. Witches don't exist, the incubators have been crushed. This is a happy ending.

It's hard to know if Madoka would choose to be a Goddess in less dire circumstances but Homura's not even giving her the choice, she's just assuming she knows what will make Madoka happiest. It may come from an earnest desire to see Madoka happy but Homura's still acting without fully understanding Madoka's true feelings.

She probably would, because Madoka's defining characteristic is selflessness. She's ready to take the plunge to save a cat, or in the show's timeline, for absolutely nothing. All she wants is to help, and that's a desire that becomes refined into the wish that changes the universe.

But Homura's defining characteristic is determination in not letting Madoka sacrifice herself. If she's going to be selfish about someone else's happiness (?), so be it.

Homura intended to make everyone miserable then?

That only tips the moral scale in Homura's favor, because while the results are ambiguous, her intent is not. She just wants a happy world for a safe Madoka.

Which is just fucking stupid.

Her motivation for wanting to figure out the trap she was in was because it was a fake contrived world in which everyone gets what they want with fake memories and live in fake happiness under influence of something evil.

She breaks out and then creates a fake contrived world in which everyone gets what they want with fake memories and live in fake happiness under influence of something evil.

The ending is absolute dogshit.
>>
>>113850452
Is it really that hard to fathom the difference? She doesn't like being forced into a fake world when she doesn't know why. And it turned out her instinct was right, the whole thing was a setup to try to capture Madoka. The new world, on the other hand, is set up specifically to shelter Madoka. That's really all she cares about. See: literally her entire character.
>>
>>113850502
Except what she does is 101% completely against anything Madoka would ever want and even her own brainwashed oblivious self states this to Homura at the end.

You're a moron. Her character is dedicated to PROTECTING Madoka - even against Madoka's will, if that's what it takes. This is exactly what happens again and again in the original series. Madoka wants to sacrifice herself, Homura stops her.

You're giving Hameru way too much credit. It wasn't her intention for Sayaka and Nagisa to be outside of the Law of Cycles when she overturned everything. I know she didn't bring them back on purpose. But at that point she already knew they were there and was just running with it.

And she wasn't just being creepy around Sayaka, she was acting evil.
e.g. blowing up the universe
Something she clearly does not plan to do.
>>
>>113850675
>>113850723
Homura's wish was to protect Madoka. And she made that wish, you will note, before Madoka asked Homura to save her in timeline 3. Madoka never asked to be brought back to life from fighting Walpurgis Night; in fact, she said she had no regrets. It was Homura's decision to undo Madoka's sacrifice, whether or not Madoka wants her to, and that's what she's been doing ever since.

>Not to mention after Madoka becomes a god there's absolutely nothing to protect her from anyway.
Homura clearly disagrees. Watch the damn movie again.

I agree with you that Homura is trying hard to act evil, but I don't know about your idea that she's doing it for Sayaka's sake. Especially considering the fact that Sayaka's losing most of the memories that are driving her to oppose Homura in the first place.
>>
>>113850952
The running theme is that Homura is obsessed with saving a girl who doesn't care about her to make herself feel good. She let herself become evil itself in the process because she rejected every helping hand she was ever offered. The only end for her is to be killed by Madoka while full of regrets for spitting on everyone's kindness.

It isn't. Homura was always doing what she did for herself. She never had empathy or friendships and Rebellion clearly showed how rotten she was at her core. She only ever cared about her wish and didn't care who she hurt to get what she wanted.

Yes. Rebellion showed how selfish she really was. In the series there was a greater evil out there and a cruel fate for everyone. Madoka fixed all of that, and Homura couldn't let go until she ruined everything. She didn't care doing it.

>>113851588
Her suffering was her own fault for being loveless and selfish. She was never noble, she did everything she could to control Madoka for her own desires. You're just distracted that the alternative was death. Homura does the same thing in Rebellion but now there is no greater evil, showing that it was never about saving Madoka but about Homura's own selfish desires to keep her to herself and grant her wish.

Yes, she wants to see Madoka run around with her family all happy and brainwashed. That means Homura finally won, and she feels good about it. If the only way to keep Madoka was to break all her bones and chain her up, she would. Homura's wish > anything else.

There's really no word for it. It's the kind of loss and betrayal the hosts of Heaven would have felt at the departure of Lucifer. It's not just a sin against Madokami, though, it's a sin against her beautiful world. The sequence where we see Homurakuma's corruption taking over Madoka's glittering nebulae makes me want to puke.
>>
>>113852094
Again, that was nothing but consolation. Madoka doesn't consider Homura a real friend like Sayaka or Hitomi but would never break her heart by just letting her go without thanks for helping her save everyone. She has no reason to consider her a friend, especially knowing she's a fucked up individual. It's a shame she was wrong to hope for her, but it'll get better when she kills Homura.

Oh, and that screencap basically confirms Madoka will never love her.

>>
>>113851213
Homura doesn't think that being dead in heaven is as good as being alive. Madoka is still separated from her family and non-meguca friends, and she can't do anything a normal girl can do. It is a fact that Madoka loved her daily life, and if you think what she did in episode 12 wasn't a sacrifice you're just trying to devalue the whole thing. The point is that for Madoka, it was a sacrifice worth making, while Homura disagrees. And you don't have to agree with Homura, but don't spout some bullshit about how her motivation is totally different from what it was in the series, because from her point of view, it's the same thing. She's still protecting Madoka.

>>
>>113853403
What does being "dead" and "alive" mean?
>>
>>113853460
Being alive is being able to exist in the mortal world. Being dead is not being able to do that.
>>
>>113853221
I love (non-rebellion) Homura and want to fuck squids.
>>
>>113853196
My apologies, apparently we are failing to communicate. Let me restate my position: Homura's motivations grow from a childish loyalty to Madoka to an intense grief as she is unable to save her even through miracles. That grief transitions to a desire to do absolutely anything to allow Madoka's happiness. She achieves that goal at the end of the series.

Now remember that Madoka's desire is to help other people. She has no problems with her family, no problems in love, and she wants to help other people be as happy is she is. This is a classical definition of "goodness:" altruism or charity.

Homura doesn't care about any of that. She cares about Madoka. Mami being dead becomes merely an impediment to saving Madoka. She doesn't reset the world to save anyone but Madoka. She is fine with the idea of Madoka losing all her friends - even dying herself for Madoka's sake. This is the beginning of altruism but it isn't altruism. It's selfish at this point but it's the road to righteousness.
>>
>>113853538
>Being alive is being able to exist in the mortal world
How is that death when you still exist and have consciousness, and are able to have an effect on reality?

>>
>>113847855
The way I see it is that they are tsundere for Homura.
>>
>>113853667
>Why?
Because that's what Homura wants for Madoka. As in, that's her motivation. Also known as the actual point if this argument.
>>
>>113853715
How does that define "death"?
>>
>>113853735
I don't give a fuck. I'm pretty sure I already said this.
>>
>>113831408
I think she left pretty clear that the only waifu she wants is Madoka anyway
>>
>>113853575
In Rebellion Homura is confronted with her deepest desires. She has fought the Wraiths until she has been overcome with grief. In her labyrinth she finds that what she wants is for all the megucas to be happy together. This isn't exactly what she wanted in the series, she didn't care about the other witches. She is confronted with reality by Kyubey, who doesn't want to spend all this energy merely supporting a few teenage girls' personal heaven. Kyubey wants to see a witch, so they tell Homura the truth.

When the labyrinth is broken and the Law of the Cycle allowed access to Homura, Homura has a chance to accept the will of her friend, who wants happiness for everyone at what Homura sees as her own expense. Godoka isn't miserable, she's doing what she always wanted. Homura can't accept that. She refuses to see the benefit of living for others at the same time as she lives for one other person.

Homura could accept Madoka's wishes and let her be happy doing what she wants. This would be unselfish. She could refuse Madoka's wishes and put her in a world where she doesn't remember anything and doesn't get to help anyone, but where she's with Homura all the time. This is selfish. She chooses selfishness, and that's a large part of what most major belief systems define as "evil."

Does that make more sense?
>>
>>113853858
>Kyubey wants to see a witch
This fucking always gets me. Why? They're emotionless. Why the fuck would they suddenly be curious?
>to understand how the new law of Madoka works
They have no reason other than curiosity, which they shouldn't feel.
>>
>>113853858
People have weird definitions of "selfish". I'm pretty sure it means "lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure." It's not just going against other people's wishes.
>>
>>113853858
But Homura convinced herself that being part of the Law of the Cycle is not what Modaka really wanted after she talked to the Madoka inside her labyrinth.
Supposedly that madoka is the real Madoka without her knowledge of her power, i.e. the Madoka she was before she became a magical girl.
Whether that's actually true or not what Homura did was for Modaka.
>>
>>113853983
Kyubey says it at the end of the series. Witches sound like terrific power sources. Wraiths are inefficient. It's not the emotion curiosity, it's a methodical attempt to understand the universe that's necessary for survival.
>>
>>113853983
To get more energy you doofus, Homura brings up that exact point. Pay attention.
>>
>>113854086
>after she talked to the brainwashed Madoka inside her labyrinth who didn't know the full truth. nor have the experiences of godhood

>>
>>113853983
They want to have control over the Law of the Cycle. They weren't curious for the sake of being curious.
This was stated word for word in the movie, how did you miss it?
>>
>>113854103
>>113854105
It was efficient enough to ensure the universe will function indefinitely. This was the only concern.
>>
>>113854069
It is when you're acting based solely on your own interests, ones that harms everyone else. There is no forgiving this kind of evil, and Homura enjoys betraying Madoka because she's full of hate and madness.
>>
>>113854145
Complete control is power, power is just a means towards either a malevolent or benevolent cause, neither of which should be concepts with an emotionless species.
>>
>>113854122
Exactly. End-of-the-series Homura was in the labyrinth with first-timeline Madoka.

>>113854164
I disagree with this because Homura's vices don't spring from hatred. Love can be as destructive as hate. We see Homura's motivations all the way through, making her a sympathetic evil, much like Milton's Lucifer, but still evil.
>>
>>113854122
She wasn't brainwashed, she was the Madoka who wasn't a God, The Modaka Homura knew and loved.
Becoming a God changed Madoka, you can easily say it destroyed her and recreated her into something else.
If she had the choice the old Madoka wouldn't do that and that's who Homura tried to save.
>>
>>113854194
By that logic they shouldn't be trying to save the universe in the first place.
>>
>>113854253
>you can easily say it destroyed her and recreated her into something else.
No, you couldn't. It simply gave her understanding and perspective. Things that are important whenever making any decision. Things that were taken away from her when she was making the decisions in the labyrinth.
>>
>>113854268
Survival is a basic primary instinct, not an emotion. They need to save the universe to continue surviving.
>>
>>113853421
I want to poop in her bed
>>
>>113854253
>If she had the choice the old Madoka wouldn't do that
Except that's wrong, as Homura herself says in that same scene. Madoka will absolutely sacrifice herself for the good of others, that's part of what makes her Madoka. That's what Homura spends most of the series fighting against.
>>
>>113854194
They want power to stave off entropy.
It is odd that they would go after a more efficient power source after they already have one unless the wraiths aren't enough to stave off entropy forever while witches are. Otherwise the motivation does not make much sense, if they are emotionless then having to do more work shouldn't bother them.
It could be that wraiths don't provide the energy they need but it's never mentioned.
>>
>>113854330
Yeah, exactly. So what's the problem here?
>>
>>113854375
So them wanting to save the universe makes sense. Them looking for more efficient sources when the current one is enough to guarantee survival or just out of curiosity doesn't.
>>
>>113854346
Why isn't simply trying to increase efficiency an adequate motivation? Remember that in the series, they put a lot of effort into trying to contract Madoka, which would fulfill their quota all at once but also result in the destruction of the planet, when contracting normal girls presumably would have been enough, just slower. What they did in Rebellion isn't much different.
>>

She hates most of Madoka's qualities that she originally was fond of because they got in her way. She hates her kindness towards everyone not her, she hates how she would give her life for others, she hates how she never obsesses over her like Homura does. She's a fucked up entity of evil that can't feel love or empathy. There is nothing sympathetic about her since she happily ruined everything and turned away at least four willing friendships for her own destructive goals.
>>
>>113854486
The only thing different about her is her physical form. She's still the same fucking spirit only with more knowledge and a broader perspective as a result. Saying she's a different person and should be saved from it is like saying every human being becomes different as they live and gather knowledge and they should be "saved" from this.

It really doesn't. You presume too much. It is in their best interests to gain as much energy as possible, as quickly as possible. We don't know what their plans are beyond Earth - if they're going to try to set up the same system on another planet, that's going to take time and energy , and the return isn't guaranteed. The more extra energy they have, the more of a buffer period they have.
>>
>>113854338

And yet the LoC still exists. If we take the imagery seriously, she literally split Madoka in two - the human Madoka, as she was before she made her wish, and the goddess whose job it is to purify witches. In theory, that system can keep working, but again, we don't really know.

Only we see a Homu that's alone in the end of Rebellion. So she's not actually with Homura, but with her family and other friends. Homu sacrifices the world's stability for Madoka's happiness. Probably not a good deed, but definitely doesn't fit the description of selfish

I think people who keep saying that Homura did it selfishly didn't fucking see the ending.

The interaction between Madoka and Homura in the end, it was not the same. Homura knows that she will never have the relationship she wanted with Madoka after she did what she did.
A relationship she could have had if she just went with Godoka and was absorbed or w/e the fuck happens there.

She gave that up because she wanted Madoka to be happy and she thought that was the only way to do it.

I don't buy Kyubey's description of their species as entirely emotionless, at least in the conventional sense.
The desire to fight for your species' survival is an emotion. That might be the only emotion they are capable of experiencing, but they do experience at least that one.
I also believe that they probably understand curiosity and (very limited) compassion. It's unlikely that they would become a space-faring race without the former, and the latter explains a lot of their behaviour in the show.

The emotions they don't understand are things like love, fear, despair, hope, jealousy, etc. The ones which tend to make us act irrationally.
>>
>>113858261
>The desire to fight for your species' survival is an emotion.

>>
>>113858261
>The desire to fight for your species' survival is an emotion
It's just a survival instinct. It's like the difference between a need and a desire.
>It's unlikely that they would become a space-faring race without the former
They would if it was necessary for their survival.
>compassion
>QB

>The ones which tend to make us act irrationally.
Rationality is just a human construct and when you think about it, life in general is completely irrational.
>>
>>113858071
a) That's a terrible idea and would break physics.
b) She doesn't give a flying fuck about entropy. The entire point of that being the Incubators' motivation is that it's wholly alien to her.
>>
>>113858327

>>
>>113858327
>>113858434
What is the difference between an instinct and an emotion?

Serious question.
>>
Instinct or innate behavior is the inherent inclination of a living organism towards a particular complex behavior. The simplest example of an instinctive behavior is a fixed action pattern (FAP), in which a very short to medium length sequence of actions, without variation, are carried out in response to a clearly defined stimulus.
>>
>>113858477
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instinct
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotion
Really is it so difficult?
>>
>>113858595
you mixing up cause and effect with things being the same.
>>
>>113858327
No.
The desire to eat is an instinct. Cockroaches have that.
The desire to run away from predators is an instinct (although it could be argued that this falls under the emotion of fear). Cockroaches have that too.
The desire to conduct complex scientific experiments and procedures over thousands of years in order to protect your descendents from a threat which is predicted to occur billions of years in the future is not merely an instinct. Some serious thought went into that, and it was clearly motivated by some kind of empathy for their descendants.

I guess in the end it really depends what you define as an emotion though.
>>
>>113858555
>>113858595

Ah. But the Incubators and/or the civilization that created them might already have biological immortality. So they're looking out for themselves.
>>
>>113858595
One is a biological definition and one is a philosophical one.
What is the biological definition of emotion, or the philosophical definition of instinct?

I really liked it, although there are parts of it that I just found silly. But the latter part with Homura was not it.
>>
>>113858784
>it's the same
So you totally "feel" the desire for survival? What does it feel like?
>>
>>113858595
So in other words an instinct is a behaviour while an emotion is a feeling?

>running away from a predator
instinct
>being afraid of a predator
emotion

More complex instincts are typically motivated by emotions. That's why we have emotions in the first place. Humans have an instinct to reproduce, and this is effected by the emotion of love/lust.
>>
>>113858812
>Still hoping for Good Omens -esque Crowley/Aziraphale mado/homu relationship ending that gives us infinite lesbian frenemies.

The only problem with that sort of ending is that it seems too obvious.
>>
>>113858874
Simplified yes pretty much. Instinct is about automated behaviours to continue survival while emotion is about how we understand things around us and our experiences and how we react to it.

Instinct is nature and emotion is nurture pretty much.
>>
You guys are missing an important element here. In "the real world", emotions are physical reactions - they're caused by hormones and various other chemicals, as well as learned neurological patterns.

In the Megucaverse, emotions are magical, and are furthermore tied to something call the "soul", which is an entirely separate concept from the body. They can clearly be distinguished from other behaviors by their ability to produce energy. If we accept this premise using the magic of suspension of disbelief, we can also accept that it's not strange for the Incubators to lack emotion while still having other behavior patterns of living things, because emotions are not simply a behavior pattern.
>>

>Instinct is nature and emotion is nurture pretty much.
But that's completely wrong.
Human emotions are pretty much constant across all cultures and time periods. That's why we can empathise with the characters in stories written by the ancient civilisations.

>>113859033
Now that's an excellent point. Their universe does seem to operate on fundamentally different laws to our own. It may be that their definition of emotion only includes those emotions which are tied to the soul and can produce energy with greater than unit efficiency.
>>
>>113858837
It feels like I don't want to die.
Instincts and emotions are just the brain's reaction to external stimuli. Emotions are just more complex.

Exactly. They're so universal that even relatively small variations in emotional responses are classified as disorders.
Also, I'm willing to bet that a lot more of those are caused by genetics than people think.
>>
>>113859388
You gotta be tough to survive in megucaland. Anon clearly didn't have what it took.
>>
>>113859418
Well they are an irregularity because we generally don't go out of our way to lock people up in torture rape basements and shit and trying to condition them to react to things differently than how people under similar, regular circumstances do. But the thing is that the kind of emotional reactions people give to things can be influenced and developed by outside sources, which gives a "nurture" aspect to it as opposed to instincts which are just hardwired into us.
>>
>>113859587
Some instincts can also be modified by conditioning.

For example, humans typically have a survival instinct, but when tortured or put under sufficient psychological stress they can willingly take their own lives.

I would say that instincts like that are just as influenced by nurture as emotions, if not more so.
>>
>>113859727
>For example, humans typically have a survival instinct, but when tortured or put under sufficient psychological stress they can willingly take their own lives.
That's just the desire to end an extremely unpleasant feeling being stronger than the survival instinct. Same with depression. It's not like you're really modifying the instinct.
>>
>>113859828
You're not entirely correct and I can't be bothered continuing the debate because it's boring arguing over technicalities and linguistics. Which is a shame really, because making them opposites ('good' madoka, 'evil' homura) ('love for the collective' madoka, 'love for the individual' homura) would be a fun way to continue the ongoing theme of "Morality? Her goal is to be strong enough to protect Madoka, and to keep her promise. Homura acts as a realistic equalizer to counter Madoka's naive desire to help everyone. She can't save the others from their fate, but she made a promise to Madoka that she refuses to give up on. It's at least on par with what Madoka does, many would argue that it's the greatest show of heroism in the series.

>>113853858
Interesting how there is no mention of incubators trapping Homura here, because that's what happened. Homura doesn't have any serious ill will against the others, wanting them to be happy is a given. I think you just skipped over the entire development of Rebellion and just started complaining that Homura doesn't accept fate. Madoka has repeatedly stated in the barrier that she can't stand to see Homura alone and suffering because of her feelings, and that she will never abandon her. That leads to Homura finally accepting those feelings and taking Madoka back. After that, she's defying death and ignoring order to fulfill her love. Which is largely building a world where those who she's seen suffer so much throughout her journey no longer suffer, a world where she can be with Madoka.

The series was about Madoka. Rebellion is about Homura, she changes. Homura only becomes an evil existence from her decision at the end of Rebellion. She has not always been evil, which is what you seem to be arguing. Which is dumb.
>>
>>113871723
All this achieved through destroying their memories and doing things against their will, going against the values those people hold and pretty much treating them like dumb animal pets that are completely incapable of making their own decisions.

Her making this fake world and erasing their memories is about as heroic as kidnapping a bunch of people, dragging them to your basement, drugging them 'till they are so out of it they don't even have any idea who they are, pointing to them and saying "see? They're happy because of me. I am a hero."
>>
>>113871993
Rewriting the universe isn't destroying memories. You're saying Madoka was evil too. You're also saying it's wrong to want to improve the world if only you can because others may disagree with your methods. You are also assuming Homura was wrong when it's confirmed everyone was happier than ever in her barrier and she brought that happiness into reality.

The heroism part is about the series, not Rebellion. Don't know how you missed that point.

Yes, Homura changes in Rebellion. She asserts her own interests, or her "love", by tearing Madoka back into existence. Homura knows what she is doing, she never parades as some kind of hero.

Once again you ignore everything in Rebellion in favor of your stupid over the top analogies. Just watch the movie.
>>
>>113872330
Homura has no basis to assume she doesn't value her life as a god more than she valued her regular life. All she bases this on is a conclusion she drew from an indirect statement Madoka made while having her memories erased.
Nor does she have any basis to assume the girls would want to live in that world as opposed to working under Madoka.

How is she improving things for the girls if the thing she's done to them is not what they want. I'm not talking means here. I'm talking ends.
>>
>>113871993
There is a fundamental difference between trapping people in a "fake" reality and altering the real universe to improve it. Homura was first forced to do the former by the Incubator trap, then she chose to do the latter of her own free will. She did nothing wrong.
>>
>>113834943

>>
>>113872557
>How is she improving things for the girls
By resurrecting two of them? Not to mention giving Kyouko companionship.
>>
>>113872557
Madoka told her leaving her life behind would be a painful experience and she would hate it no matter what. That's all that matters, Homura wants to spare her that pain. Whether or not she's happy as a goddess isn't the point because Homura knows she was extremely happy with her original life, it's either equal or worse. Urobuchi and Shinbo both agreed it wasn't a truly happy ending for Madoka.

Homura doesn't intend to let the others know about the previous world. All of their lives are improved now and Homura intends to protect that happiness. As far as we know there is nothing wrong with the new universe so there is no reason to object to Homura improving their lives other than concern for Homura's own happiness and well-being. Sayaka didn't asked to be revived and was pissed but realized in the end that she was happier than she ever imagined being, and then went off to be with Kyouko all smiles. This isn't brainwashing, by the way, getting her life back was a tremendously happy experience for her even if she hated admitting it.

>All she bases this on is a conclusion she drew from an indirect statement Madoka made while having her memories erased
Those were Madoka's true feelings though. She can't stand to do anything that makes Homura cry. It's sort of a reminder to Homura that Madoka does actually care about her. Or in other words, Homura not doing what she did, not being able to be happy, is ultimately something Madoka can't bear. That's why Madoka gives Homura the ribbons during the space hug, telling her not to give up, even if that's so risky and only brought about the devil.

>Out of magical girl heaven.
Yes?
>>
>>113872852
If it's an alternate universe then it is morally neutral because the original universe still exists.

If it's a modification of the original universe then it's as real as anything Madoka ever achieved.

How are those feelings any more true than the ones after becoming a god? Maybe, get this, you braindead sack of shit, without knowing the pleasure of being a god she would say that shit, but actually being a god would change her perspective? Maybe she found a new value and something more than fucking running to school like a dumb bitch wih toast in her mouth? And Homura took that from her?

But sure if you asked me whether I want to be right or if I want to be a god, but not before erasing the concept of "god" from my mind, that would be a total indication of which I value more.
>>
>>113872940
At least Madoka had the courtesy to let Homura keep her memories.
>>
>>113873067
Yeah, because that worked out so well for her.
>>
>>113873098
Not Madoka's fault Homu trusted the incubator with her knowledge.
>>
>>113873067
True, but that would have resulted in Madoka getting depressed and sacrificing herself to "save" Homura again. It could be argued that erasing memories like that is partial murder, but if so then Madoka committed omnicide too.

Ethics gets messy when you're effectively a god, but I think both Madoka and Homura managed to achieve very positive outcomes.
>>
>>113873023
Being a god made Homura cry. That's not something Madoka wants. Maybe Madoka would prefer to be a goddess for herself, but knowing that it literally killed Homura would make her regret it all on its own. Mata Ashita, Shinbo and Urobuchi, and Madoka herself say that abandoning her life would be traumatic, and it's not about growing up or moving on, it's about making sure Madoka doesn't have to give up her happiness on earth for some ambiguous ideal as a concept with no ability to reconnect with what she was before. At least now Madoka can eventually choose if Homura ever fucks up. Whatever she chooses it will be with Homura's happiness in mind.
>>
>>113873023
>How are those feelings any more true than the ones after becoming a god?
What does Madoka say after becoming a god, specifically, that you are referring to here?
>>
>>113873187
It's not even that, I mean Homura wasn't exactly happy with those memories.
>>
>>113873322
>Being a god made Homura cry
So now it's about Homu
>That's not something Madoka wants
Good thing she was gonna take her to her own heaven then oh no wait Homu fucked that up
>Maybe Madoka would prefer to be a goddess for herself, but knowing that it literally killed Homura
How did it literally kill her? She was going to die a natural Magical Girl death anyway.
>and it's not about growing up or moving on, it's about making sure Madoka doesn't have to give up her happiness on earth for some ambiguous ideal as a concept with no ability to reconnect with what she was before
She IS what she was before, only in different form and with more knowledge. What makes you think she'd prefer her regular life in which she depreciated herself over this new existence?
>At least now Madoka can eventually choose if Homura ever fucks up. Whatever she chooses it will be with Homura's happiness in mind.
She could do that when she was a god. Fuck it wasn't even a choice. "Wait for Homura to die, pick her up". Unless you mean becoming a god which she already fucking chose and she would chose anyway because even without Homu even the idea of just becoming a Magical Girl appealed to her.

>>113873372
Which is why she cried over the idea of forgetting Madoka.
>>
>>113873733
>What makes you think she'd prefer her regular life in which she depreciated herself over this new existence?
What makes you think she prefers her life as a goddess over her regular life? No, the answer isn't "because she chose to become a goddess" - she chose to sacrifice herself fighting Walpurgis in timeline 1, too, but surely you wouldn't claim she prefers being dead to being alive. Madoka's nature is self-sacrifice. This is emphasized again and again. But if she had the option to make the positive changes she made with her wish while still keeping her life as a normal girl, why wouldn't she want that?
>>
>>113873868
Homura surely knows the answer because...?
>>
>>113873733
The reason Madoka gave her the ribbons was because she knew what she meant to Homura and wanted to have a bond with her. She didn't expect Homura to suffer from loneliness and emptiness in her absence, nor did Homura. Madoka would definitely have done something different if she knew how badly Homura was hurt. Homura went through years of time loops for Madoka without despairing but could not manage a few months with tons more power in a world without her. That's pretty devoted love and it's sad as hell, Madoka wanted a better life for her and Homura got none.
>What makes you think she'd prefer her regular life in which she depreciated herself over this new existence?
To get her family and friends back? To experience growing up? To actually be in love with someone outside of some nirvana that may or may not exist? Hell, Sayaka clearly missed Kyouko, why would she do that if heaven were great and they would be together forever? Madoka had a wonderful human life and every character noted that she shouldn't give it up. Madoka has a martyr complex and would die to save a kitten, that doesn't mean she should have to or be allowed to or even be happier doing it.
>Unless you mean becoming a god which she already fucking chose and she would chose anyway because even without Homu even the idea of just becoming a Magical Girl appealed to her.
Not giving up her life. That was her sacrifice, she wished away witches and that was the price she paid. She was okay with it, but nowhere is it said she was happiest this way. She's a good person, but it's not impossible she would prefer saving people and living to saving people and dying. Oh, and making the one you love most totally dead inside for the rest of her life.
>>
>>113874104

Ask Madoka. By doing so you'd already be a much better person than Rebellion Homura.
>>
>>113874408
>She gets gets friends back.
Just because there's an afterlife doesn't mean nothing is lost when you lose your life. Doesn't work that way. Otherwise everyone would just kill themselves and get to the good part.
>>
>>113874537
She never had an opportunity to do so. She had to act according to what she thought was best.
>>
>>113874588
Because she totally couldn't hold off her universal rape plans for a few minutes. Of course her unexplained surge of power would go away somewhere if she did.
>>
>>113874408
>And how do you know she values the old life above her new one?
Again, you're the one saying she would prefer the new over the old. There is evidence for her not wanting to give up her life, copious amounts in fact. Evidence otherwise is what? Her smiling? Mata Ashita explicitly says she fake smiles and tells lies to smudge over sad goodbyes. She smiled for Homura when she blew her soul gem to pieces. You are making Madoka sound extremely selfish, that it's about her and not what she achieves.

>>113874537
Let's say she did. Madoka would probably see what would happen if she said no and say she was happy regardless of the truth. She wouldn't care what happened to her, but she wouldn't want to watch Homura do something harmful to herself. So what does Homura make of that? Also, Homura already had enough information to act and didn't have enough time to chat with Madoka before she got taken away. Another good point is that for Homura being taken away would have been a bad end since she would die a failure.
>>
>>113874681
>Because she totally couldn't hold off
She couldn't. Madoka was literally inches away from her. You know what happens when Madoka reaches you? She kills you. That means you die.
>>
>>113874711
>Again, you're the one saying she would prefer the new over the old.
No, I'm demanding you to explain where you draw the conclusion that she wouldn't.
Illiteracy is one hell of a drug. Don't go too hard on it.
>but she wouldn't want to watch Homura do something harmful to herself.
Except she wouldn't turn to evil if she didn't go against the law of the cycle but rather worked in agreement with madoka. Of course considering she becomes a god herself, just evil, it means Madoka could easily do the same shit Homura did at the end. It pretty much spells out that Madoka heaven is just like, if not better, than Homura's "reality", only it doesn't fuck up the rest of the universe.

What the fuck are you talking about? Madoka and Homura's powers come from very different sources, and are, as a result, very different.

>>
>>113874867
I have. Multiple times. You're just ignoring them. I also am not saying she wouldn't, but she would definitely not be happy giving it up and not hold regrets. I also said she now can choose what to make of herself one day whereas before she couldn't, which is an objectively better outcome than Homura just dying. And again, you don't explain why being a goddess is objectively better than a second chance at life, something Sayaka admitted was sweeter than she could ever imagine.
>that second part
None of that is coherent. I'm not going to bother continuing because this is entering the realm of fanfiction and it's clear you didn't really understand much about anything.

All my money on Homura.

That depends. While she was omniscient, did Madoka watch a bunch of chess games and learn how to play?

/a/'s attitude towards Rebellion really changed. When it came out, a bunch of people were whining about how it was a cash grab and ruined everything for money, and now people discuss it more seriously.

Do you think they all left or did they eventually come around?
>>
>>113875926
Reactions have always been mixed, some people still call it a cashgrab. Of course, people who are fans of it are more likely to remain in the threads over an extended period of time. Bring it up in a non-Madoka thread and you'll still get that reaction.

I think there's an initial bad after taste that more or less everyone has after the movie. However, it eventually fades once someone's had time to let the ending sit with them. Some people were fine with the ending very quickly after the film -- I remember being upset on my drive home from the theatre, but by the time I reached home it sat alright with me. Some others can't get to that place as easily, or by themselves. And some never get to that place.

And then there are people who are just trolls.

Plenty of people don't like the ending even in this thread, but when they're talking about it, it's very clear that they're approaching the ending on its own terms, so they're taking the movie seriously. It's different from the kneejerk reaction where people were saying that Rebellion didn't have artistic integrity.

Who the fuck was saying that.
The first reactions to Rebellion is the same as the one's we see in the threads created by latecomers. That is, it was people going "what the fuck was that?", long before they were complaining about any cinematographic choices.
