You might check out Boogiepop Phantom. In some ways its more sci-fi or fantasy, but I remember it having a horror feel to it.

It's pretty slim pickings for good horror anime. I guess maybe try Shiki. The first 12 or so episodes have a couple of genuinely unnerving moments. Thing to keep in mind is that the anime takes a pretty radical shift in tone away from horror about halfway through.

Horror is by far the hardest genre to make well. Up to this day I have only ever seen one horror movie that was actually scary (not just jump scares) and deserved it's genre. Still waiting for a horror anime.

Shinsekai Yori only has a slight touch of horror later on, of a slightly ghost girl variety, but it's still well-done, and also a good series in general.

Boogiepop Phantom is Lain Lite, basically. Slightly more comprehensible, but just as atmospheric and unnerving. Would also recommend.

Shiki isn't really horror so much as it is gruesome, but it can be unsettling, and again the plot is great.

Those might not be totally up your alley, but at least give Boogiepop a shot. It gets forgotten a lot here.
