I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that's a major break of the Ginebra convention, and the first of the show if I don't remember wrong.

After all, the ones removing corpses/injured are usually medical personnel.


Anyway: I got a big "Blitzkrieg" feeling from the base pannings.

Being a randomly new character in a show is a pretty big deathflag.

Also, cheap tactics by the designers. Because of sameface and because we had few reasons to give a shit about the new people, they were pretty much designed to look like ones we already knew. The major was a dead ringer for the other guy.

This could be a pretty obvious hint that they just took the guy POV. Though, if he died, that wouldn't be that odd either. If a tank gets hit by something that penetrates the armour, the pieces of armour don't just vaporize. Instead they turn into shrapnel that shreds everyone inside the tank. The same thing would probably happen if the nose of your mech is blow up. Shrapnel flies into the actual cockpit and kills you.

God, I love this show's battles.

Finally a show where conventional military assets, like tanks, artillery and infantry is actually useful vs the mechas.

And real tactics being used to engage and destroy them - obvious tactics, such as RPGing their fucking legs.

The mechs in general are great. Very down to earth and not too overpowered, even the MC's special snowflake.

Too bad about all that QUALITY, though. This show deserved better.

Very much this, specially the MC mecha: It's not OP yet people is starting to make will rumors/stories about it that go beyond the actual impact the unit has. After this battle the rumor mill may actually go even more out of control with people saying that the whole base got destroyed by the Argevollen alone even to it's job was to rush around the place shooting randomly to look menacing.

After a closer look, yeah, there was a tad of that and while I think some could have been handled better, they did a good job of convening the whole picture. The visuals may have not been up to par but any viewer could understand what was going on and the impact each piece had on the whole. And that's is something many an anime can do right.

Actually, TBH, one of Argevollen main 'problems' is it's consistent lack of battle damage of any kind be it in people or in the war material. They try to dissimulate and lessen it by many means (The RPG to the legs part? Hide it with a lot of smoke instead of showing a ripped off leg!) but it's clear that they simply don't have the time/budget to add it into the mix. Having said that, I still respect the job they are doing all-around and understand their decision to concentrate their efforts elsewhere.

Err.. The Argevollen is rather the exception (so far) to this as it has been heavily implied that the standard fire arms a mecha carries (SMGs or even assault rifles) are not enough to actually go through it's armor. Every other mech takes accumulative damage from continuous bullet hits until it's too much to stay standing as it happened to Tokimune in the very first episode.

Even if the Argevollen does not take any damage, he has panicked from that since the beginning. it's a hang over from his TK training.

It was specially apparent on episode two when a simple anti-infantry spread put him on the defensive even when he clearly was, quite literally, beating the enemy with ease.

Does anyone else find the OP animation to be extremely awkward? The song is great but for the visuals all we get is a bunch of weird, close up shots of the characters and a white background.

The only part that feels right to me is when the chorus comes in with Jamie running, and the spinning shot of the main character piloting and screaming.

It is indeed and you really don't need to set your FM goggles that high for that.

As for the Argevollen/Tokimune combo, in my in-game mind, we are at the advanced part of the second phase were the pilot is finally getting a bit reliable with it's movement an his shooting even without special weapons(*). You now can use the unit more daringly but not too much as High XP units are still a problem to land hits on and you simply don't want to risk a Game Over on that.

At this point the battles are still 95% normal warfare with combined arms tactics and the Argevollen begin most useful at making the AI do wrong moves by over-reacting to it or simply causing units to dash out of the way.

From here things can go many ways indeed as external factors to the unit start to interfere be it with your unit selection or by giving strange missions/objectives to you. During this Tokimune is starting to get oddly good with the Argevollen to the point that others are worried about the depth of connection he has with the mecha... And this is the cue for the heavy plot-related missions to hit the fan.

SO what's going to be the major what the fuck plot twist?

Aliens? Third party with Argevellon's Mk 2 storming the BF?

Will the MC ever learn how to fucking fight?

This show is really weird. On one hand it feels so incredibly boring and mediocre, but on another hand the military scenes are realistic. The drudgery of waiting, moving, waiting for the next meal, being angry about the commander telling you to pack things up. Being dirty because there are no showers...

And the military tactics. The series has completely missed air forces though, which is really weird considering the technological level of the settings. I guess they'll just ignore it altogether. I mean, is this some sort of bizarro world where they didn't invent flying? I guess air superiority would make for boring mech battles? I'm imagining the cast seeing the first man made flying object ever and being shocked.

Oh, I'm also loving the various establishment shots on the different cities and their populace. We're not given much background information, but the world feels real in a weird way. How the good guys' capital is surrounded by hills and forests to Ingelmian commercials telling people to buy war bonds. Feels really weird how some cities don't seem to be affected overtly by the warfare and have the ability/resources to have the kind of civil society that would even make buying war bonds optional.

I feel that trying to make the other side more sympathetic at this point of the show is kind of late (and various scenes like the old guy being all "I'm menacing because I shoot well at a range" which in your average anime would be taken at face value where-as here the cast basically laughs behind the back of such a trope.

This show gets so many small details right I can't help but smiling about them. I'm also thinking the entire setting and story would probably work better as a visual novel, tbh. The show is trying to cram in all these little details that make me nod in agreement but it can't possibly keep doing this without pacing issues.

TLDR: Possibly the best mediocre anime I've watched.

I can see from where you come from on this but it may be that the fact that Argevollen is not trying to be over-the-top at anything in order to stand out that makes you (like many others) think it's just a mediocre thing to be ignored in favor of the newest fancy light shows that most animes are now days. You do, however, notice the attention to detail and the setting in itself so (unlike many other) you get a call from a series that has what many others don't have: A complete picture.

Admittedly is still too early to make a call on Argevollen (see >>112910887 ) but I really like what I'm seeing.

I often see people in Arg threads complaining about how seemingly useless the rifles are but if you think about it, assault rifles and especially SMGs don't have all that much penetration power, which when going up against heavy armor is important. So basically only the howitzers and tank guns can pierce Krieger armor making the rifles for anti-infantry and light vehicles. However, while glancing shots may not kill a krieger I bet the force of impact is enough to seriously disorient the pilot to the point where they are useful in that regard. Also you never know when you'll get a lucky hit between armor plates or something.

Just like HMGs and Autocannons aren't very effective against heavy tanks, krieger handheld rifles aren't going to be very effective against said mechs
