What 20th century anime are you watching?
>>
>>112285157
I downloaded Onii sama e and Rose of Versailles. Now they will sit on my backlog for a couple years.

I watched They Were 11, which had the best food fight in anime.

I've never seen Nadia on one of /a/'s recommended anime charts. Is it not well liked?
>>

The Africa arc and the middle episodes soured people since it was so good before those. The awful movie didn't help. It has a lot of filler.
>>
Almost done with Crest/Banner of the Stars, just some OVA's left

Pretty good, I enjoyed it

S1 > S3 > S2
>>
20th Century Boys
>>
None right now, but I finished Ashita no Joe anime a while ago (when HS conveniently released AnJ2 after Saizen finishing AnJ1).

It was reall fucking good. Apart from a couple of dumb fights (Harimau), it still had the best story in a sports anime I've ever seen. Some of the most solid writing overall, too.
>>
>that Slice of life column
What a clusterfuck. Heidi, KareKano and Gosenzosama grouped together without a care in the world.

This is why "SOL" as a genre category is pure crap.
>>
>>112287966
Slice of life as a whole is a stupid idea
>>
>>112286908
>reall fucking good
>>
I'm currently watching Digimon Adventure in the original Japanese. I gotta say I prefer the English dub's music and voice actors better
>>
I've been watching a lot of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Zeta Gundam lately.

And too new for this thread technically, although in terms of manga it'd still count, Major.

This board probably hates me.

>>
>>112293307
I'd say so. NSN, BB and other series are still one of the best hentais even today. But this is a topic for /h/, so let's keep it SFW.

ot: I'm thinking of rewatching HnK, also considering streaming it.
>>
It's so fascinating to me how back in the day they were able to draw such amazing anime, just look at Spriggan or Akira. The artstyle is so raw and nostalgic, I don't understand why they dropped it. What the fuck Japan, now I need to rewatch some 90s action anime, because there is literally nothing as of late that even comes close to these shows. Unless you like a teenage MC who has a special superpower and cares about his friends.
>>
So are any of these considered must watch?

I never saw much in the way of Anime, but so far I've seen Bastard and a little of Dragon-Half, but that is it.
>>
>>112295148

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 went to shit after it turned into a Konaka philosophy script around the second half of the series
>>
Currently watching Patlabor and I'm downloading Initial D. I'm pumped for lolracinganime
>>
I love Shamanic Princess, it makes me so happy whenever it's mentioned.

I also wish we could get a full Galaxy Fraulein Yuna series.
>>
Slowly rewatching Slam Dunk and I just started Lady Georgie
Also, I there's an anime I saw as kid that I'm trying to remember, if any of you could help it would be great.
It had very old school shoujo art it was probably from the 70's, one episode was about a young girl or boy who was very weak or disabled, the kid had a huge dog, maybe a Sn Bernard, who was always with him/her. So near the end of episode there's a fire at the kid's house, they can't escape and the dog protects the kid with his body until they manage to get out and it ends with the dog dying from the burns. Childhood trauma right there. Does it ring any bells to anyone?

Literally the only anime I watched (and probably will ever watch) from this chart is Gunbuster. I watched a couple episodes of these when I was 5 or 6, but I don't actually remember anything from them (Slayers, Escaflowne, Cobra, Gao Gai Gar)

I'm probably gonna pick up GiTS soon, finally got around to watching Akira earlier this month. Which makes me want to pick up the mango since apparently it's tons more crazy

I'm watching Macross for the first time. This anime has aged beautifully, and the plot is quite interesting, I look forward to every episode. It's also comedy gold.

Just wait. I love Macross, but it's QUALITY makes early Sunrise look like Van Gogh. It's the only series where the animation quality almost caused me to drop it. I'm glad I didn't, but I came close.
>>
>>112305930
Did you watch Night on the Galactic Railroad because of Giovanni's Islands BD finally being subbed?

That film is directed by Takahata as well.

>>112308946
Haha, you guessed me. Though I had had it on my backlog for awhile. Gonna watch Giovani's Island today.
>>
After the mediocre mess that was Arion, I didn't expect much from Yasuhiko as a director.

But Venus Wars was surprisingly good. Well, aside from those scenes with regular animation over live-action backgrounds, I don't know what the fuck was up with those.
>>
>>112286908

I thought those were neat, at least as an experiment. Check out Giant Gorg if you want to see Yas direct a series. It's one of my favorites.
>>
>>112309121
I liked Arion better than Venus Wars. Sometime before the Kurtz bike race VW just starts feeling like two separate movies without even delving into the second part of the manga. Crusher Joe is also a bit too long for its content while Arion mostly feels like one solid piece.
>>
>>112309222
It certainly looks good. I can't wait to watch it.
>>
>>112293883

Won't have any time to watch anything with classes starting next week, but I'd be interested in picking up Ashita no Joe, possibly GaoGaiGar. Watched some of the Macross movies when I was a kid, tempted to watch the full series. Record of the Lodoss War sorta sounds familiar.

I understand what you want to say. Let me address it so we can quickly get it out of the way and continue actually discussing anime in this thread.

If one has seen 461 titles by simply watching 75 titles per year from 2008 to 2014, I wouldn't call him an expert either. In contrast, if the majority of those 461 titles has been carefully selected and researched, 400+ titles will allow one to form expert opinions on the subject (given reasonable intelligence & academic perception).

Also, I've seen more than 461 titles because every now and again I forget to update my lists. 461 is simply the confirmed number of fully completed titles. In reality, I've probably seen more than 500 or 550.
>>
>>112313969
You are a troll right?

Of course you are look at that name.
>>
>>112313969
>In reality, I've probably seen more than 500 or 550.

>>
>>112313330
thankfully they were made in the 2000s, so we can pretend they don't count
>>
>>112313967

>>

>>
>>112314018
Not a troll. You can test me by asking me a few questions or pick a topic of your liking that you want to discuss. You will see that I'm a reasonable poster. Admittedly, the length of my..handle will inevitably call for attention. I give you that.

>>112313638
I'll get those when someone gets around to slapping subs on them, but the DVDs are fine for now. I'm used to watching things with no remaster at all anyways.
>>
>>112314209
Thats a terrible reason really though when you look other stuff on there, CCS for example or Macross or Lupin or AnJ.
>>
>>112314188

But there's no point to your handle because 461 doesn't mean anything, neither does anime expert The only actual thing with real information is that you mention you saw The World's Strongest last.
>>
>>112314291

I love CCS but there's a huge difference between how well known CCS, Macross, Lupin and AnJ is compared to Gundam.
>>
>>112314043
500 or 550 titles is, let me quote you, "quite a low count"?

Really? Really?

Your view is an extreme one. Because if 500 is low, then what is 50? 200? 400?

I'd say:
0-10 casual
10-30 somewhat of an interest
30-50 enthusiast
50-100 anime fan
100+ degrees of hardcore fan

But let's agree to disagree, because I don't want to waste time arguing with extremist views.
>>
>>112314293
It's obviously self-parodying.
>>
>>112314383
I would hazard to guess there are a lot more western people who are aware of cardcaptor sakura than gundam even if they do call it cardcaptors.
>>
Is the 1974 Yamato better than the new one? I mean I can watch both I guess, but is one exceedingly better than the other?
>>

>>
>>112314478
Are you new to /a/? People here generally consider anyone under 300 shows to lack the knowledge to have their opinion taken seriously.
>>
>>112314478

>Your view is an extreme one. Because if 500 is low, then what is 50? 200? 400?

They're all low, I don't know how you can say otherwise. I think your view is extremist if you think 100+ is any sort of upper limit.
>>
>>112314293

You are right, there is not much to my handle. 461 titles can mean 461 anime movies or 461 series, each with 52 episodes. But: I never said my handle is of importance.

Also, is there a point to your handle "Anonymous"? This board gives us the option to fill out the form with a custom handle or not. I did, big deal.

>>112314556

>>
>>112314556
2199 is better by a huge margin since the animation and direction aren't shit. Also, fapbait.

I do hope we get more of 2199 since the ideas of the original show are good, they were just executed badly.
>>
>>112314681

>Admittedly, the length of my..handle will inevitably call for attention. I give you that.
>>
>>112314791
>2199 is better by a huge margin since the animation and direction aren't shit.

Do NOT listen to this anon, the direction in 2199 is shit compared to the old one and they also try to cram far too many subplots into 2199 because they aren't just taking from Yamato S1, they are pulling from S2 etc.

While this sounds good on paper (more ideas, more interest) it fails to pull it off in any meaningful way and only distracts attention from everything.

Watch 2199 after you have watched the original.
>>
>>112314906
The direction is leagues above the old one. There are some hiccups in the writing though and some bad episodes, but overall 2199 is so much better.

Fucking nostalgiafags thinking that classic shows can do no wrong.
>>
>>112314791
Noboru Ishiguro is a far superior director to whatever shit head is working on the new adaptation.
>>
>>112315018

'badly compressed because they took from the entire Yamato storyline instead of just the Iscandar plot which ultimately led to that huge battle with Domel feeling rushed and sidelined with Yuki's shit.'

'took away important roles that the original characters played in favour of spotlighting their new fapfuel girls'

Nope, been here since 2004, with a few very long breaks. But if that (less than 300 titles = not taken seriously) is really the general consensus here on /a/ and not just your opinion, then yeah, I may have to adjust my view. But I doubt that's the consensus here. Maybe the view of a few hardcore anime fans.

>>112314634
Someone who has seen 2000 anime titles could say

-anything less than 1500 is low
-2000 is mid
-4000 is high

But is he right? From his extremist point of view maybe yes. From the POV of the general populace no. I say: a count of 100 titles can be considered very high from a general POV. General POV as in normal people. After 100, a creative mind can of course define his own degrees of hardcore, but I lack the time for that.

200 - go back t Crunchyroll
300 - go back to your high school anime club
400 - go back to Reddit
500 - Maybe you're okay for /a/

Let's say this board has a 2000 unique visitors per week. Do you really think the majority of them (i.e. all those who participate in

-current season anime threads
-buyfag threads
-monstergirl threads
-moe/pantsu/ecchi anime threads

hold the view that any poster with less than 300 titles seen can't be taken seriously?

I think you will agree with me that the majority of all visitors of this board (51%) has not seen more than 300 titles and therefore does not hold this extreme view.

There was a MAL list thread recently. 9 out of 10 lists had less than 200 completed anime titles. See where I'm going?

>>112315359
The average dictates the norm. Ask yourself if you really think that the majority of this board's visitors considers a number of 200, 300 or 400 to be a low number. I think you'll realize I'm right, dude.

I'll cut my replies on this topic shorter.

Nope, I think most posters & visitors on /a/ have seen less than 150 anime titles. As such, they don't share your view.

Also:

500 = "maybe" ok for /a/
and 600 = "on /a/ too much"?

What kind of a curve is that? At least make a more linear curve.
>>

Just because you haven't seen 300 titles doesn't mean you cannot think it isn't low.

>There was a MAL list thread recently. 9 out of 10 lists had less than 200 completed anime titles. See where I'm going?
I've seen more than 200 titles but I wouldn't post my MAL list anyway. I imagine a lot of us don't go near MAL threads anyway. They're just fuel for shitposting.
I think 2-300 is an alright number. I don't consider myself anything close to an expert, but not a complete pleb either.
>>
>>112315442
You're too hard on yourself. Being halfway to Hogwarts means you should be mid tier. My power level is close to yours, and mid tier seems about right to me.

I didn't think anyone would take that list word for word.

In any case, whenever the discussion arises concerning an acceptable watch list for posting on /a/, the community at large (as portrayed the three people posting in each thread) has consistently come to agree that ~300 is a decent base. These threads have appeared more than a couple times over the years, so I imagine that this is more than simple coincidence.

But those numbers are too low for me so I stay on IRC and generally refrain from posting here.

I'm watching the original now and, while I have not formed an opinion yet, right now I like how 2199 fixed some dumb shit from the original, like Gamillas changing their skin color halfway through for no reason, Dessler saving Yamato etc.

For another example, right now I'm at Domel's last stand, where he deploys the carriers.
In 2199 Yamato previosly managed to bypass the brunt of Gamillas fleet which explains their poor defense afterward. On top of that it was made clear that upper echelons wanted him dead, so they gave him a ragtag group of 2nd category soldiers.
In original nothing like that happened, and they keep talking about how this battle will "determine his homeland's future", which makes the fact that they gave him only like 5 ships, considering the amount of troops they've sending at Yamato before, seriously weird.

>>Just because you haven't seen 300 titles doesn't mean you cannot think it isn't low.

I see now. So even if you yourself have seen e.g. 700 titles you will say that 500 or even 700 is a low, and 400 quite a low number. So then nobody or only a few statistical outliers have in fact seen many titles, according to your logic. I don't know many people who would agree with your logic, but hey, let's conclude this discussion. :)

>>See the above. I think the average person who visits /a/ has not seen nearly enough anime, including yourself and myself.

That's up for discussion and to each and everyone's priorities in life. But calling a number 400 titles "quite low". Feel free to drop it after the last Ken vs Raoh fight since I don't think it's as good past there and it should've ended there because this storyline after with the emperor just isn't as engaging as the previous arcs.

I'm watching Lost Universe on and off. The lead's voice is annoying, but Hayashibara and Hiiragi Mafuyu(?) are amazing. The show itself is -alright-. Picked it up because I heard it's the same universe as Slayers, so the lack of Dragon Slaves is terribly disappointing.

>Dessler saving Yamato etc.

What? How is that dumb? That's incredibly integral to the character they were presenting for Dessler.

> like Gamillas changing their skin color halfway through for no reason

I don't think that's something that's particularly dumb, just an animation change.

>In original nothing like that happened, and they keep talking about how this battle will "determine his homeland's future", which makes the fact that they gave him only like 5 ships, considering the amount of troops they've sending at Yamato before, seriously weird.

Better off sending a small but extremely solid force with somebody like Domel commanding to finish the Yamato rather than a big, sluggish, force.

Domel also nearly fucked the Yamato in the original, don't forget. Compare how damaged and fucked the Yamato was in the original to 2199. Big fucking difference.

The interaction between Domel and Okita when he contacts the Yamato has far more emotion and soul in it than in 2199, let's not forget the fact that 2199 completely guts out Sanada's moment to shine by replacing him with their new fanfic character to defuse the bomb (why was an intelligence officer defusing the bomb over a top-tier engineer like Sanada?)

2199 has incredibly appealing girls but it comes off more as fanfic, they also soil Dessler in 2199 by making him a politician and not an almighty dictator that he used to be.

The Ghost in the Shell movie is still my favorite anime of all time.
It mightn't become yours (very spread-out pacing, minor bit of navel-contemplation), but it's beautiful to look at and has some very solid action scenes. Excellent atmosphere, cool characters, and the Major's tits.

Ninja Scroll is ace. Quick, brutal fights, really fucked-up atmosphere, generally badass in every way.

>>
>>112317449
Movie critics watch a lot of movies compared to normal people. But compared to the number of movies "out there" they have, of course, seen jack shit. As such, it makes more sense to compare their viewing behavior to the one of other people.

I'm talking statistics man. Check out these threads:

>>112316792

>>112298965

>>112295876

How many anime titles do you think the average contributor in those threads has seen? Then think how much of a percentage of every visitor of /a/ has seen more than 200 titles. If you think that the average /a/ visitor has seen more than 150 titles, you're seriously deluding yourself.

If 80% of /a/ has seen less than 150 titles, anything over 300 is a lot. And not "low". Even if 1% has seen 1000 anime titles.

I don't know if you go to college or not. Ask your statistics professor or play with excel graphs.
>>
>>112318961

>Movie critics

I'd prefer to keep this discussion kept on anime.

>I'm talking statistics man.

You are but you are also assuming that because the average person has seen 300 series they consider that 300 to be whatever you want them to see it as.

>If 80% of /a/ has seen less than 150 titles, anything over 300 is a lot. And not "low". Even if 1% has seen 1000 anime titles.

I disagree, it's low and most people probably haven't thought about how much they have seen. Anybody who thinks 300 titles is a lot is misguided.

Just because 150 is the norm doesn't mean 300 is high. The vast majority who have seen the 150 surely realise that both 150 and 300 are low. All these statistics prove is that /a/ has seen too little anime and should probably watch more if they are genuinely enthusiastic about it.
>>
>>112318961
Having a low average doesn't mean that you should lower the standard to match it. You can save that sort of logic for the MAL forums or Facebook anime groups.

Not to open another can of worms, but even with such a low power-level, I already feel I hit the borders of my preferred genres, making it increasingly hard to find anything that fits my tastes. Make me wonder how people manage to watch 1000+ shows without being complete omnivores who devour anything regardless of fitting tastes or quality.

>>112320113

I don't think people have to be serious about anime, just that we'd all enjoy it at the very least. The trivial arguments over some seasonal show which you'll forget about once it's done? The 1000+ watchers most likely choose to expand their horizons. I guess I'm already doing that, exploring new territories, and my tastes aren't THAT one-sided. Still, of the original chart I can already cancel anything that's even remotely shonen - so three or four whole columns, which alone account for an estimated 70-80% of all anime.

That's why I don't attend the uni anime club.

Why people care so much about quantity nowadays ?
No surprise the are so many obese people here in 4chan.

Its obvious why quantity is important here, it is used as a way to either make claim to authority for your argument or discredit someone elses arguments.

My brother started watching anime a few months ago. At first he said slice of life was stupid and unfunny, but I started him on a few and he's in love with it now.

People who've seen more are, in my experience, more likely to have a greater appreciation for things, or at least they're less likely to blindly hate on others. This is why quantity is important to me.

Anyone else think it's funny how stuff from the 70s and 80s looks a million times better then anime from the early 00s? It really shows just how bad computer generated anime is compared to hand drawn shows.

It really isn't a matter of how many series you have seen to not care. Too many people on /a/ limit themselves to what is airing or what anons say is good and there's a lot of school setting with teen protagonists in the titles that come up. It's overexposure that makes them react violently and can easily be remedied by dabbling in a bit of everything.

You should. The pacing is crap (like, really, really crap), but it's a classic, and it has one of the coolest giant robot designs, period. It does quite a few things well, and it's definitely stylish.

that being said, it also takes forever for you to actually see Gunbuster itself in the show

Go watch it. It's short as hell, too. Decided to watch it late at night, went to bed at 4am the next morning (so, only slightly later than normal, kek).

I assume you must be including films and hentai, shorts and specials in that or something? Otherwise you have seen more approximately 2/3rds of all TV anime ever released.
>>
>>112323981
I'm fairly sure that both the DVD and BD have the redrawn scenes in them, so if you don't want the redrawn scenes you will need to find the LaserDisc rip.

It is hard to say if the original scenes or the redrawn scenes are better. The redrawn scenes are definitely better in art quality, but they look jarring in comparison to the original art style.
The original art keeps the same art style, but looks pretty shitty.

I think the BD is your best choice, unless you really can't stand occasional art shifts like this image.

Deal with it. Manga doesn't appeal to me like anime does.

I do feel that it should be better treated with regards to online availability though, it's so easy to get the highest quality of an anime available and download in just a few seconds but for manga it seems very itty bitty. Shame about MT going down, was the anime hosted on their servers? I think a site relating around torrents might fare better.

Anyone interested in a new release of Nazca?

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/86857/

I upped ep.1 a few weeks ago but took it down because I re-encoded it, still looks mostly like that comparison though. Also styled and modified the subtitles, done eps 1-3 so far, but it takes a long time even if I started it out of personal interest.
>>
>>112327609

Which one is yours? I think mAce looks better. There's way too much detail loss on Magistral in the second screenshot.
>>
Gundam 0083
Going to watch watch 0080 and 08th MS Team afterwards.
>>
>>112328148
08th MS Team is probably my favorite animated Gundam. The lovestory is awful, but if you ignore that it's good.
>>
>>112327811
That's mostly due to the difference in sources.

There's some detail loss compared to the VOB, but the lines on the floor are blended with artifacts and I don't think they are really recoverable. I spent hours tweaking filters to avoid detail loss, and I think this is the only scene where it is noticeable. mAce basically didn't do anything, there is dot crawl all over it but their source is better.

On my source, eps 1-3 are compressed into one file of 1.68GB (as different angles I think) while every other episode takes up ~1.38GB if I remember correctly. That means I had to stack a bunch of filters to get rid of the horrible artifacts.

On the other hand I'm pretty sure eps 4+ are strictly higher quality because the audio bitrate is double of mAce's.

I checked mAce's ep1 before I even ripped my disc, and there are some places worse on it like there are some places better. Look at #4 near the bottom of the frame, there are a lot of frames with this problem at the top and/or bottom.
>>
>>112328534

Magistral also seems a bit flat in the colours, especially on #3. Some light gradients seem sorta blurred out, like the sheens of light/dark.

The re-encode looks a bit better (see pic)

It's also a bit blurrier at the source. Mostly it's just that after removing all the artifacts it looks "too clean".

Maybe if I could get help from someone who's good at Avisynth it could look better, it's my first time screwing with this, but I tried out different sets of filters over many days and that's the best I could manage without re-introducing artifacts

currently watching:

Lupin s2: like one episode per month. Used to love the first season, but after 50-80 episodes the whole series feels like a chore, unfortunately. Same thing every episode.

Getter Robo (original): Seen one episode, pretty entertaining, but not sure if I will continue. People on /m/ recommended to watch the newer series, but as always I chose to go hardcore, chronological way (I do the same with books/movies/series). Perhaps a mistake with this franchise.

ROLW OVA: was pretty cool, will check out the TV series soon. Been in my backlog since 2005.

The Japanese really seem to have trouble with Danger, I remember seeing it wrong multiple times in Gundam aswell.
>>
>>112329382
Alternatively, I could re-encode mAce's eps 1-3, but there are some issues with that. For example, I think they inverse telecined everything, but the credits are interlaced. And there are a lot of damaged frames, which I don't like.

Might steal the audio tracks for ep1-3 from them at least.

>>
>>112332660

>>
>>112332802

Alright cool, seems to just be a broad change.
>>
>>112332895
I thought the small hassle of having to press a few shortcuts mapped to delay adjustment on MPC every so often was worth it for the increase in video quality of not having to watch SD.
>>
>>112332802
I think that tends to happen for dual-audio releases because the subs are timed to try and be common to both audio tracks, and end up missing the mark all the time. What I do in that case is adjust the timing roughly based on how off it is, and then add lead in and lead out and keyframe snapping and consecutive line snapping to catch most of what's still mistimed.
