There's a good set of encodes with subs floating on nyaa right now, but I managed to actually get a set of the disc images.

There was a set of torrents on nyaa sometime last summer of the ISOs, but one of them was dead. I ended up DDLing a ridiculous amount of multi-part .rars for a few weeks. Those links have got to be long dead by now.

After that I demuxed the discs and brought them into avisynth/virtualdub and synced them with the blue bricks for subtitles/dub audio, and muxed together some custom DVDs. It took over a month but it was worth it in the end. I'm doing the same for the movie discs now, and I have GT to work on once I finish watching Z again/

Definitely watch the original Dragonball first, as for which version Kai changes several voice actors, some of which are improvements (Frieza) and some not so much (Gohan), and while they do cut out some of the insane amount of filler there were a few bits that were genuinely funny, like the driving lesson episode. That leaves it as pretty much a toss up, but either way the funimation english dub is by far the best, as Sean Schemmel's Goku is just excellent

I always assumed it was a combination of respect for his father and the fact that he never got an official ceremony to become the new king.
