The only thing that could get me to stop pirating anime is if they made a service like netflix. A flat monthly fee for on demand streaming at high resolutions, fansubs supported. Another fee for manga maybe. Unless they actually give us what we want there's no point in supporting their shitty fucking business model. I mean, almost forty dollars for a fucking blu-ray? Jesus christ Japan, that's no where near worth my time when it's that much more inconvenient than pirating it.
>>

Are you high or just being payed? Streaming doesn't work at any quality. If they don't support downloading without DRM there's no reason to support their business model. DLsite does it right, and a lot of people on /a/ buy from them and similar services. Otherwise pirate or import, but supporting CR or Netflix only harms the industry and supports the shitty business model they run on.

Japan doesn't care about any of you. Japanese people make niche japanese cartoons for a niche japanese market, not a global audience with a (low) global pricepoint that wouldn't give them the revenue they need. This isn't like videogames or iTunes. Having simulcasts are already going above and beyond the call of duty, in their minds.

Remember when a couple of years ago Viz asked Mangastream to take down all their licensed Shonen JUMP series? That's what they did yet they are scanlating them again.

It's impossible to stop this kind of thing. Instead Japan should see the bright sides of it: without piracy, the "Japan boom" wouldn't have landed on West. When I was still a student in the 90's most people didn't know shit about Japan or anime, it was just some country where people have weird eyes and speak some kind of zing zong language. It's completely different now and I doubt this would have happened without piracy.

I've had it with this topic. We've had many threads on this in the last 3 or 4 days. There hasn't been any new information besides people trying to troll people. So why don't we just wait until actual news surfaces that they actually accomplish something? Its like the fear mongering after 9/11 for fuck's sake. Just stop it. Nothing will likely come from something like this. They can't possibly find ways of prosecuting you overseas for pirating anime so stop worrying about it and claiming the "loss" in sales thing is dumb to no court would find that plausible in the slightest.

The funny thing is that we're actually a much larger market.
If they were to sell anime at reasonable prices (i.e. what you would pay for your regular BD-Box for an American TV Series), they could cut the middlemen and get plenty of money.

At the same time, I'm glad they're retarded at business, because if they were to exploit the Western market as they could, then they would likely start catering to casuals, and looking at vidyas and comics, they're full of shit.
So, God bless the Japanese, and their retardation at doing business.

Why should I pay for stuff I dont want? The less I and people like me buy, the more deprived and pandering anime will get. It's a total win. All I want to see are cute girls doing cute things, moeshit, harems, ecchi and the occasional mindless mecha. It seems the more precarious the industry is, the more they produce what I want. Even if they stopped making anime tomorrow due to a lack of capital, there's still enough anime to last me a lifetime.

You really think they actually care about western pirates and this isn't just a song and dance like all these things are in every country?

The difference between all those things and anime/manga, is that animu & mango are not sold globally, they're sold to a very small group of people located only in Japan and for a very high price, so any advantages piracy may have are rendered null and probably only hurt sales.

Now, if Japan could actually get their shit together and try to take advantage of the global anime following and rework their business model to reflect that, then it probably wouldn't matter as much and they could actually reap the benefits of piracy instead, and as a bonus maybe they could pay their animators enough to live above the poverty line and actually make animation a more attractive career.

This will never ever fucking happen, because the "global anime market" is still too fucking small and will not pay for shit. Like you said, this is not like movies, music, or videogames, which are practically global mediums. This is like a specific genre of videogame and music.

And you forget that cartoons are still for fucking kids, so any animation media like this will never, ever sell on a global market any more than it is right now. What they make then will not make up for the loss they'll miss out on in their own home country. We should be surprised it's getting licensed as much as it is, even if they are later down the line (and are still insanely cheaper than they are in Japan). We could still be living in the 80s and not even have ever heard of anything but 1 OVA a year.

My name's Matt and I'm a reformed anime downloader. There was a time, not too long ago, when I rushed home from school to check the progress of my torrents with all the thrill of opening gifts on Christmas morning. I compiled series after series, put them on CD and even made my own labels for them with photoshop. But it was a speech made at AnimeFest in Texas by Greg Ayres that got me to stop. I didn't understand just what effect I had been having on the Region 1 industry by joining the ranks of other downloaders out there. The industry was ailing and like a distracted medieval physician asked for a second opinion I was just prescribing more blood-letting. Since then I've reformed and have been buying more and more of the series I had downloaded on legit DVDs. I want to help the anime industry continue here in the US. Anime is an immersive, vibrant, fascinating art form from a culture that, as an outsider, I will never fully understand. But understand the Japanese or not, I love the art form they've created and I want it to continue and I understand that the best way to do that is the buy the DVDs, watch the shows on television, watch the shows via sanctioned websites, etc. I hope this reaffirms that there is a group (perhaps an all too quiet group) who do want to support the shows we enjoy.

I guess this is relevant again. Someone should update it to include something about CR.

Sometimes I have to wonder why studios don't skip the dubbing process.

Perhaps it helps sell a rematch to a good number of fans, but I think Aniplex, if anything, has a better business model of paying bottom of the barrel because they know 90% of people are going to hate dubs anyway and just buy the BD.

But I think these avenues would be fine if a bunch of BDs and such came out with no dubs in the first place.

I can understand if they had better avenues for people that want to watch things as they come out besides fucking CR(who really just monetized on stolen subs and pirated shows until they decided that the stream service was really the only good way to make the dish. CR probably would have had zero intent in making business partners in Japan if they didn't realize that Netflix: animi edition was the only way to reel in paying subscribers).

The licensing companies who do try make it far less convenient than pirate sites.

Pirate sites currently offer the best service for the best price. How the fuck can legit sites justify themselves when their product is completely inferior to what fans do for free?

And any sort of gating that prevents me from trying new shows without paying for them is gonna stop me from wanting to try. I gave Chaika a shot because it was free and liked it, but would've avoided like the fucking plague if it cost even a sent. Now there's at least a small chance I'll pay for it at some point. the amount of people who consume pirated goods does not equal lost sales. Chances are they're people who don't want/are unable to pay and if they couldn't get it for free they wouldn't get it at all. First 3 episodes should always be completely free, no strings attached.
Episodes should then vary between 1-5 dollars based on production budget and expected popularity.
Refunds should be expected if an episode has absolutely garbage art or animation.
When finished, series should be offered in a bundle discount, with the first 3 episodes still free.
A subscription service should allow you to get 4-5 for free, and discounts on additional episodes.
Episodes should be offered in a wide variety of downloadable, DRM free formats, including at least MKV with softsubs and chapters, in multiple filesizes, and in multiple languages, with 0 attempts at region locking.

Basically, the service should match or exceed what is provided for free by college students on their free fucking time.

Hey, buddy. Have a drink. Relax.
Let's talk about this, ok? We don't have to be mean to people. People can be our friends. Look, they're not always gonna do what you want them to. Sometimes, they're gonna make threads you don't wanna read, and you know what? That's okay. You might see that thread, and think to yourself, "man, that really puts a weasel in my chicken coup," but here, friend, you have a choice to make: you can go into the thread, throw open the doors, and yell, "Hey! I don't want to see this kind of thing!" You can tell OP right where to stick it.

I'm not asking for better than free, I listed some prices.

I'm asking for the service offered to be as good or better than what is provided by kids with a laptop. Valve did it. It could easily be worth it, if it's at a good price. The only problem is international copyright law and licensing, which means the Japanese companies have to be willing to play ball. And if they're not, fuck them. They deserve to have their shit pirated if they aren't vending their shit for its fair value. They're never going to stop it entirely, so they only have incentive to bring the price and convenience to a level where people say "I could pirate it, but it's easier, faster, and more reliable to to get it on anime-Steam or whatever the fuck it's called."

Videogames aren't anime. It won't work.
I pay for steam games for multiplayer, and trading and all that extra shit. There is nothing comparable to that in an anime, and therefore no reason that piracy will not be the better option than paying.

>Anime is easier to distribute and cheaper than video games, and would actually benefit more than a steam like system than video games did.

We already went through this in this very fucking thread. You need the volume of consumers to make streaming worth it. Anime does not have that. Videogames do. Videogames are a fucking massive, massive, massive industry, one of the biggest in the world right now. Anime is fucking tiny.It can't do it. It just won't fuicking work. Even with "global anime fans", which is also fucking nothing compared to videogames.

Think of comic books. They can't just go and release all their new releases for $1. It doesn't have the consumer base for it. It's a niche industry. It just doesn't work. It will never work.

I don't see what the big deal is. Unless you are some little kid(who shouldn't be on 4chan anyways) you should have enough money to get a crunch subscription. The only people who are throwing a fit are the kids who have to steal anime because they spent their allowance hanging out with their friends at the mall.

No body that should be on /a/ shouldn't have a CR subscription. If you are all Elitists who claim to love anime like you all say you do you wouldn't be stealing.

Frankly, I strongly disagree.

The fact that Japan has not sold globally is probably the main reason as to why I watch it.

If anime were to be catered for a wider audience, we will have less lolis, less fanservice, less gore, less fucking everything that made anime interesting just to pander to plebs who spout m-muh children, m-muh privileges.

Going to make a program like steam, where you dont pay for monthly, and only pay when you want to buy an anime. When you're watching it, all your other friends can see what you're watching. Also going to implement a trading system to the program. I can gift you something, or we can trade my said anime, for your said anime.

Although I do think that anime creators and mangaka shouldn't be losing money over pirating, that's what websites like Crunchyroll are for. The problem is that there are thousands of animes out there, and Crunchyroll just doesn't have them all. This is an awesome form of media that should be shared across the world, and we need websites like these in order to spread around those animes that aren't picked up by websites like Crunchyroll. To prove my point, just compare the anime found on a pirated site, and the anime found on Crunchyroll. Although Crunchyroll gives revenue to creators, has better quality etc, it cannot even compare to the sheer number of animes on other free websites. This law shouldn't be passed.

Meanwhile, here in the States, I can't swing a dead cat without hitting some hippie who wants to lecture me about diversity this and multicultural that, and how I'm supposed to be ashamed of who I am and humble myself before the foreign hordes. Even a site like 4chan is all "Muricans are dumb, foreigners are superior." I wonder if 2ch bans people for racism.

Therefore conversations tend to break down quickly for various reasons. 4chan is no worse than most other places. While I do believe that the system we have in place to view anime (torrenting from places from nyaa, e.t.c) is not 100% right, I believe that japan really underestimate just how accessible anime is to westerners. We don’t have television stations that play anime regularly, whether it be the current season (which never has happened with the exception of space dandy, but we got a dub) or just above average anime. What westerners are able to get are bastardized versions of anime that are dubbed over. Most dubs aren’t able to capture what makes an anime great, and in the end of the day a subbed over anime with the original VA is usually the best experience. THAT’S the problem though. Where are westerners going to get official anime with good subs at a high quality? There aren’t stores where we can find official anime blue rays with good subs at retailers unlike Japan. Crunchyroll may say it is 1080p, but it’s not as good as its1080p BD rip counterpart. Until Japan is able to make anime with good subs and high quality that rival the downloads we have now readily available to westerners I, and many others are going to continue to pirate. Also for most people, dealing with websites like ami ami are a daunting task that they rather no try to use due to the language curve.

Thankfully he doesn't go to nearly as many cons as he used to and shitting up the place. I wanna say I heard he went to as many as like 35-40 cons a year at one point. Mostly because they gave him free booze and he got to demand to DJ the dances and be a pedo faggot to 14yo girls.

They get it. They just don't wanna acknowledge it because it would make them appear dumb.
>>
>>111465353
So did I on 7.
>>
>>111465349
Those are boring autist hobbies.

Do you begin to see a pattern here, anon?
>>
>>111465411

Everyone with a hobby is shit.
>>
>>111465349
>>111465411
Because normal people just PARTYYY and have sex. And watch blockbuster movies/TV.
>>
>>111465349
>let's blame society

You may be right, but we can't change that and when the labels are what quite literally define you as a person to people who don't know you I think most would play it safe
>>
>>111465437
what if your hobby is playing a sport? Caught ya there didn't I????
>>
>>111465369
Yeah but that's the point. Jojo is going to get as many seasons as it is going to get.

It's shit like, for example what anon said earlier, Unbreakable Machine Dolls which was a new series for a very young studio that didn't have a lot of support, but had a very dedicated audience that needs the support of it's foreign fans.

Although it didn't get a big response, the people on /a/ that did watch it were very dedicated and many of them ended up buying the BDs in the hopes that Lerche wouldn't be niggers and would end up making a second season.

Instead they made a second series on that Hamatora shit.

Watamote is a great example. The shit was almost canceled, but the support of /a/, yes us right here, ended up saving the manga from cancellation. The mangaka acknowledge our support on twitter and thanked us profusely for keeping her dream alive.

We can, and we do vote with our dollars. If we all bought crunchyshit accounts and said that absolved us of our responsibility to something we love it would have meant the end of it.

Fuck you. If the christian god can take Mary as his waifu and make a religion out of their kid, I can very well buy a merch of my waifu.
>>
>>111465349
Except I have an office job (although its business casual, so no ties) as a computer engineer and I still buy merch. And the only basement I have is the underground parking for my car.
>>
>>111465495
Oh yes, I love shooting or kicking spherical objects into nets! I also love seeing people beat up each other!
>>
>>111465495

>implying depressing old men trying to recapture high school glorydays aren't also a shit.

Sports are only acceptable if it's a career, but then it isn't a hobby.
>>
>>111465553
ME TOO!!

I sure think that women's are sexy. I really want to stick my thing inside them.

Let's all have drinks of alcohol and talk about those sporting games.
>>
>>111465530
to be fair I heard Hamatora is immensely popular in Japan, but I agree with you 100 percent

THIS IS IT. THIRD IMPACT

>Sports are only acceptable if it's a career
Why? I mean what is the point of professional sports anyways? How does that contribute to the society?
>>
>>111465631
How does anime contribute to the society? As entertainment just like professional sports. It also motivates others to play that sport and work out in doing so
>>

I've always enjoyed watching hockey, but could never afford to join the team in school bc of paying for equipment and ice time. But I recently found out the city maintains an outdoor rink specifically for hockey. So I think finally this winter I'm gonna spend some dosh on some basic equipment so I can kick around there and beat up on kids half my age. (Or get beat up by them more likely, as I'm sure I'll suck to start with)
>>
>>111465631

Nothing but society is sure fucking willing to pay you a lot of money for it. I'd call it a win.
>>
>>111465611
1/10, I checked.
>>
>>111465631
Don't forget that they also actually sell shirts and figurines of these famous sports people. So why can't I do that to my chinese cartoon?

When you look at the sales for UMD it is actually really fucking impressive, for the first REAL production by Lerche. I think they ranked third or fourth in the 2013 fall stalker rankings.

It's too bad that they didn't use the sales they made off of Hamatora and UMD to hire more people and ended up doing both. That little sliver of time from Winter 2014 to Summer 2014 could have been their big chance to grow, but instead they played it safe and who knows when they will have that chance again.

>>111465662
Fuck off maplenigger, this is a CHRISTIAN American forum.
>>
>>111465713
And people buy and wear jerseys with their favorite player's name and number. It's basically cosplay as far as I'm concerned.

The other day saw someone wearing a Austin Rivers jersey and thought "Damn that nigga has a good taste in basketball players" and I nodded at him he nodded back, then I saw a guy wearing a Shinji plugsuit shirt and considered telling him congratulations, but then thought that'd be fucking creepy and weird. What am I doing?

And fantasy football in dungeons and dragons for middle aged normies.

It's all the same shit, but since there are more of them than there are of us, we are the losers.

>Not pretending to be Asuka and get him to masturbate over you
It's like you're ashamed of being on /a/, anon.

Maybe we should be

I was going to leave my house for the first time in a month the other week ago, and I showered and went to change, when I looked in my drawers I suddenly realized that all my shirts had changed to anime shirts.

I finally picked the lowest powerlevel one I could find and hoped no one would notice.
>>
>>111465600
You heard wrong. Fujoshits you listened too are just in denial over how much of a flop their show was.
>>
>>111465897
No because I laugh at people who play DnD because I don't understand and people who play Fantasy Sports because I don't understand it.

>inb4 b-but DnD is really simple
>>
>>111466070
As a /tg/ and /sp/ crossboarder let me assure you that it is really the same thing. Crunching numbers and minmaxing in a class based system.

Midwest actually has snow and ice during winter, so we do things like hockey still. Shocking, I know.

That's that nothing between New England and BEST coast, right?
>>
>>111464559
I know for sure a few of them are the BD sources. Like Madoka for instance. And I'd guess the Monogatari series too.
