The characters become more realistic, more understandable, and get to have value in themselves.

I totally disagree if you mean that the sci-fi stuff wasn't as interesting. The original anime plus EoE made for the most serious of discussions.

You could discuss the real sci-fi, the things and concepts of humanity all great novels and writers touch upon. We had the concept of a "hive-mind" coupled with the individual fragility of man, making up for a dilemma between eternal peaceful but non-individualistic existence, and individual conflicted existence.

The thing is that it all felt real with NGE - it felt like good sci-fi, and to a degree, it really was. Diving into man having technology not meant for them, all those interesting and meaningful concepts that are just gone with Rebuild.

Because Rebuild is about waifus and Anno making sure his waifus look good and those who are not his waifus are shit.

Then the sci-fi stuff now is just regular garbage with no real meaning. The terribly cliched and cheap "loop" idea you see in every shoddy mass-produced sci-fi work.

Noone takes it seriously either. It's just a device to put waifus on screen, and that's it.

Let me quote Wes Anderson about NGE;
