I really enjoyed the routes I've read. (Michiru, Sachi, Yumiko)
It's not perfect, but the character writing is good enough and the characters themselves are interesting enough to hold the weight of each route.
People get annoyed over how much it's praised, and that's reasonable I suppose, but it's important to understand that the translated VN scene isn't exactly saturated with great stuff.
I enjoyed it a whole lot. I'm not overly optimistic about the anime, but I'll watch it just to see Juicy Yuuji animated.

One of my all time favorite vns. It never fails to make me laugh. Comedy is more important than the sex scenes, even. I haven't fapped much to it since I've gotten so emotionally invested in the characters, I couldn't possibly fap to them getting dicked minus Sachi and Amane, who are just too sexy.

It's one of the longest games I've ever played through, I'll give it that, but it's not bad. Being longer than Xenoblade isn't a bad thing. I've definitely played longer VN's before, especially pic related. The more content the merrier, especially when the content is thoroughly good.

Characters have their faults, so they're not just authors wanking it over their creations. Yuuji isn't as powerful as many cocksuckers tend to think he is. He's a relatively powerless VN mc, especially compared to people like Wilfred Dion.

I really enjoyed Grisaia a lot, and despite the vocal backlash from the popularity I don't give a shit and it hasn't changed my opinion. I haven't played a ton of VNs, but Grisaia is far from the first and I consider it a cut above a lot of other VNs.

He has every cool trait in the book. Even though he has a tragic past, he still manages to be the best at all kinds of things and to accomplish everything he tries. Rules don't apply to Yuuji and the other characters in the story are only there to praise him and make him look good by comparison; anyone who dislikes him is treated as an obvious villain.

Granted, he might not be as extreme as the main character from Mahouka, but the author was clearly channeling his desires when he wrote Yuuji. He is without a doubt the least interesting/worst character of the entire VN

Nigga, I played into NG+ and post game. Gameplay was fun as fuck. SRPG is still one of my favorite single-player genres, right next to 2d Platformers like Megaman. I'm cruising for a bruising, and Kamidori gave me a good one. I had fun the whole way through.

I've put in over 2000 hours in Terraria, so the nearly 900 hours it took me to 100% Kamidori aren't too outrageous. Keep in mind that people who find that gameplay fun will like the game.

The fact that I can write a 30-50 hour long novel in a month means that it isn't very long. Given, NaNoWriMo doesn't give you any time for editing until after you submit, but it's still a fun exercise.

Also, I went through 2 routes of Kamidori + post-game, and I had a blast with it as well. Given, my taste in games and books aren't exactly the norm, but even then, I think most people would find it fun. I'll admit that I'd rather be playing MK8 with my little sister and brother, but Kamidori isn't a bad alternative.

There are very few eroge with proper literary merit that have even been translated in the first place, so most people in the west will never really know what's out there and what the medium can do. All of the really good stuff will most likely forever remain in Japanese because those works are simply too difficult for anybody in the fan translation scene to pull off, and I'm personally OK with that after seeing how badly Ixrec fucked up Cross Channel.

I would love to see someone try to translate a title like Dies Irae and keep even half of the nuance of the original writing intact. A great deal of information seems impossible to carry over into English.

Tell, me, outside of Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, when's the last time you've seen an Ondine, specifically one that isn't a violent asshole? You do know that Suina goes against all the cliches of her "archetype", right?

Same with most of the other characters. Elizislayn and Melodiana were pretty well written. Uya was extremely well written, and is one of my favorite characters in any SRPG, where as Kohakuren is overly cliched, but she still brings something new to the table (specifically her relationship with Uya and that dead fox-skull).

You can't expect characters to get fleshed out in a 150 hour game in 5 hours. You played through 1/30th of a normal playthrough and think you know all there is to know about the game.

Save Sachi for last. I would not recommend Makina's route last if you want the last route to be satisfying. I say this not because of the storyline itself, but only because it's very polarizing. Before the game got popular here, I remember a couple other sites praising Makina's route as the best, but in the threads here at the time of translation, not many people agreed at all, myself included.

The other routes, not quite so much. I don't think anyone could not feel some sadness for what Sachi went through. I liked her route very much.

Michiru's route was the biggest disappointment I had with Grisaia.

Initially I went into Grisaia with my eyes on Michiru, as I shamefully had shaped myself a bit of an opinion based on previewed CGs and voice samples.

But really. Things were quite fine and dandy until I realized that the cell-memory thing wasn't just Michiru's belief/theory. But an actual thing
And it only went downhill from there.
The whole thing about being underground for several days wasn't quite the smoothest executed segment in the story either.
And while they did proper backstory and explanations for it, her mask and whacky antics while endearing at first, did wear me out a bit by the end and I was a bit disappointed we didn't get to see more sides of her more.

I like Michiru. And I wanted to like her more. But as far as my impressions of her and her route she sadly doesn't compete.

Yuuji is actually an interesting character. He's not over the top overpower character that has magic or super powers. All the abilities he has make sense and he goes through a lot of training even if he does emo out as fuck like in Makina's route where he keeps constantly going on about his demon hand.

He's not some happy go fag he's a logical and realistic person that knows what he has to do to get things down instead of wishful thinking.

Though the only thing I don't get is why do all the girls fall for him? Amane I know why due to feeling guilt for Kazuki, but the rest I don't get it. Hell, Yuuji is a complete ass to Micharu and she still ends up falling in love with him even though they have zero chemistry and there wasn't a bit of romance at all in her route.

A lot of people seem to have a problem with that.

It bothered me too, at the time, but looking back on it, I don't mind it so much. There are plenty of things that we don't yet have explanations for, so I don't mind them being a little creative and coming up with some bizarre medical miracle that's supposed to seem weird and impossible. If they'd used something that was actually proven to exist and explained, then it wouldn't have the same effect.

There was some romance in Yumiko's route as well. The only routes where I could see that Yuuji was actually in love with the girl were Yumiko's and Sachi's.
