Honest answer, it differs from writer to writer but when referring to the popular consumer material that most people are exposed to it's probably because for some reason Japanese manga/LN writers in recent times have fallen into the trend of writing lazy teenage boy wish fulfillment style works which ends in the main character feeling unrealistic and all the supporting characters barely having any personality at all. As for female manga/LN writers, well to put it simply any writer who wrote a female wish fulfillment story would in most cases never actually sell anything and therefore never get published because there's no market for it. This means that the only female mangakas/LN wirters that manage to get published are the ones that write well and the ones that write eroge (because there's always a market for eroge).
