So what are you watching from before the year 2000 /a/?

I've finally made it into the UC OVAs after finishing Char's Counterattack.

Was Tomino depressed in the late 80s? Cause CC sure makes it feel like that.
>>
Started watching Master Keaton a few weeks ago and slowly going through it. On episode 27 now.
>>
>>110799539
That's the detective one, right? How is it? I think it's in my bakabt wishlist.

Tomino was never involved in the UC OVA's Ironic because they turned out better when he isn't in it.

>Watching War in the Pocket in the Summer.
Shit, nigger what are you doing?
>>
>>110799539
It's not a pure detective show but some episodes are pretty much just that. If you like Urasawa's stuff like Monster then it'll be up your alley.
>>
How's Excel Saga?
>>
>>110799720
>Shit, nigger what are you doing?
E-Enjoying great character development a-and story?

And from what I've seen of UC Gundam so far, Tomino is a bit erratic is terms of quality. Though when he's great, he's really great along with the inverse being true.

>>110799805
It's fun and silly, worth watching if you want a good laugh.

Just finished SDF Macross and DYRL. I loved them, but am afraid of what the rest of the franchise is like, if I delve deeper into it one day.

Starting the Patlabor Early Days OVA tonight.

you will never have a wedding keiki shaped like the Macross ;_;
>>
>>110799720
>Ironic because they turned out better when he isn't in it.
Only 0080 is good though.
08th MS Team is overrated and 0083 complete garbage.
>>
>>110800089
They're all gold compared to the turd that is ZZ.
>>
anytime i feel kinda meh about anime i sit down and rewatch 08th ms team and the first 2 patlabor movies
>>
>>110800133
I enjoyed ZZ's lighthearted nature a bit, though it does kind of shit its pants in the last 5 episodes or so.
>>
>>110800133
ZZ is dumb, but it's got Dublin arc and Puru at least.
>>
Too much mecha shit being posted. How's about you fags watch more Maison Ikkoku or Touch?
>>

:^) His thumb makes this picture a bit interesting.
>>
>>110800207
>Puru
Damn right.
>>
Watching some Armored Trooper VOTOMS, just finished the vietnam-like arc. Really good so far and it'll probably end up as my favourite mecha anime behind Patlabor 2.
>>
I am not watching currently anything... just finished few things. I am probably gonna watch a few movies or OVAs now before starting another series. Webm related, probably gonna watch it now.

>Patlabor 2
So, is VOTOMS heavy on politics?

I liked second Patlabor movie, but it isn't that easily digestible like the first movie and got a bit less air time for the most of the cast. So I would say that I probably liked first Patlabor movie more.
>>
>>110801273
>the only time you get to see ZZ's best tits is when they die
Why Tomino?
>>
>>110801316
>So, is VOTOMS heavy on politics?
No. It's heavy on canonical plot armor
>>
>>110800207
The entire earth arc is good.

Obviously gravity is GOAT and Char is full of shit.
>>
>>110799433

Watching Turn-A Gundam for the first time
>>
>>110801316
Not really. I'm working my way through the third arc and it barely ever touches on the politics between the Gilgamesh and Balarant.
>>
>>110801549
How is it so far? I've heard it's one of the better Gundam shows in general.
>>
>>110801607
From what I got it's one of the better gundam shows but not that much of an impressive show beyond that.
>>
>>110801607

I'm at episode 4 and the pacing is pretty crazy, one second something is happening and the next the show moves on to something completely different and then back again and then to that other thing again

I don't think I'm far enough yet though, not to give any thorough judgment.
I like how it's set in the far future. So far that humanity on Earth has been reset to turn of the century/industrial era stuff. Then on the other hand the people that settled the moon ages ago are still there and far more advanced. The problem is they want to settle on Earth again and the more primitive Earth people for the most part don't even know these moon people exist. Well it's pretty crazy so far.
Then there is all the nudity, I've never seen an MC and cast be so nude so often.
Also after all the modern "kyaaa he's naked in front of mer pervert baka!" stuff it's weird to see a girl be so composed around a naked guy while also being barely clothed.
>>
You're breaking my heart, Sato.
>>
Just wondering, is Mobile Suit Gundam supposed to be kind of crap?

I find myself hating the federation, and Char is by far the one with the most character to him.
As a matter of fact, Zeon is fucking great, and they have far more going for them as a whole.
>>
>>110802024
I don't think anyone who perpetrates war in Gundamn isn't portrayed that nicely, both sides do some pretty horrible things by the end of the day.
>>
>>110802024
>is Mobile Suit Gundam supposed to be kind of crap?
Nah.

Also both sides are supposed to be fleshed out which was revolutionary at the time, and it's probably a matter of preference which one you end up liking. I like Kai and Amuro and Bright enough to be a smelly feddie.
>>
>>110802162
>is portrayed*
>>
>>110802202
>I like Kai and Amuro and Bright enough to be a smelly feddie.

Try Bask Om, Jerid Messa and Yazan "I'm going to violate you" Gable if you want the real face of the Feddies.
>>
>>110802202
>Kai
I really wish there was more of him in Zeta, I really grew to like his character as an adult much more than when he was younger.
>>
>>110801607
As someone who generally doesen't like gundam shows, I was told by gundam fans that Turn-A was the gundam to gundam if you don't gundam gundam.

I didn't really care for it. The second half of the series made no sense at all. It felt like what they were building in the first half was just totally ignored and they turned it into something completely different. Something where atrocities were forgiven in the drop of a hat for no real good reason other than "Welp, I switched sides."

Was it also revolutionary that the only reason Amuro was capable of piloting Gundam was the fact that he read the fucking manual?
>>
>>110802359
>As someone who generally doesen't like gundam shows, I was told by gundam fans that Turn-A was the gundam to gundam if you don't gundam gundam.

Eh, I would've recommended 0080 since it didn't have the usual trappings that put off non-fans from Gundam (Illogical characters and motivations, story direction etc.). Give that one a try.
>>
>>110802445
Possibly.
His dad designing the robot was pretty old but at least it wasn't the only requirement to pilot it.

You either love it or hate it. It's Tomino's depression at his best or worst YMMV. Also, 52 episodes with almost no stock footage is an amazing feat considering it's from the early 90's.

Macross Plus is great so you should at least watch that.

Macross 7 is polarizing. It took culture vs. militarism theme to the extreme. If the original was a bit silly then Macross 7 went full retard with spirit energy, and space demons, and song lasers. Personally I hate it but a lot of people like it.

Macross Zero is mediocre. It's boring and it has a very heavy handed environmentalist message.

Macross Frontier is nice. It's an anniversary series so it doesn't really do anything new but there are many references to the older shows. It's not the most original show but it's enjoyable.
>>
Does Cobra have the best animation of any TV series in its era? The show is pretty much non-stop action and all of it is animated smoothly with constant movement in every shot

Currently watching 08th MS team. It's really atmospheric and the characters are great so far. When I'm finished with that I'm going to start war in the pocket.
>>
Speaking of Gundam, how much does Zeta reference 0079? I literally haven't seen 0079 in a decade and don't remember shit besides the most basic plot details and Amuro/Char, no way I can remember side characters and subplots
>>
>>110806786
Quite a lot of characters from 0079 show in the first half, along with the fact Char is in the entirety of the show.
>>
>>110806953
>Char is in the entirety of the show

>>
>>110806983
I'd love to see your Char dickriding get thrown off the rails once you've watched CCA.
>>
I just finished Gunbusters. Holy shit what a happy ending. How did Anno make this and then turn Evangelion and EoE into suffering?
>>
>>110806983
Good, because he's the best part in my opinion, just damn enjoyable in every scene.
>>
>>110806786
Zeta is a direct sequel to 0079 mate
>>
>>110807053
Guy isn't perfect, even he knows that. Characterizations are kind of all over the place in CCA, probably because the story of CCA should have been ZZ's story.
>>
>>110807194
I honestly don't have a very high opinion of the guy. He's vindictive, hypocritical and manipulative. Generally not a guy you'd want to buddy up with. I'd rather be with Yazan. At least he's honest about being scum.
>>
>>110807320
>I'd rather be with Yazan
He went from actually threatening to complete buffoonery during the transfer from Zeta to ZZ.
>>
>>110807383

Your enjoyment of Macross 7 will depend in a large part on how much you like Basara. If you think he's an obnoxious twat, which is an opinion that nobody can really fault you for having, it's going to be a rough ride.
>>
>>110807060
short answer: when he made Gunbuster he still thought he had a chance of getting into Noriko Hidaka's pants.
>>
>>110807602
That guy clearly hates fun. Macross 7 is pretty much a spoof of 80's hair metal shenanigans in space. It's like the franchise's Spinal Tap.

>If you think he's an obnoxious twat, which is an opinion that nobody can really fault you for having, it's going to be a rough ride.

I sort of thought this up until the last episode and then the OVA's. Basara is fucking amazing, he's a goddamned savant. The last sequence in the last episode was like some music video you'd see on one of those late night music channels years ago.

The shift to rock was great http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYDiFfu5tLQ

and so was the shifting of the stage, Basara was Ichigo and Minmay combined and then turned up to 11. His only true lover in the show was the utah.

>wishlist

Why the fuck would you have a bakabt wishlist?
>>
>>110808691
My internet is really bad, so I have to pick and choose what I download. I save things on there to download later.
>>
>>110799863

How did you like the incredibly QUALITY character animation for SDF?

At least the ships/mechs were almost always pretty.
>>
>>110801607

If Turn A gundam was one of the "better" gundam shows I fear for the quality of the rest of it.
>>
>>110808851
All of that is come and gone in the movie DYRL, but you risk watching a heavily condensed story, but hey the staff said it's the "canon" one to follow.
>>
>>110802359

Don't forget all those shitty "rivals" that appeared throughout the series with a mounting desire to defeat the Turn A but they never really amounted to much and just kinda petered out to be replaced with another.
>>
>>110806607

For an early 80's TV show it has insane animation detail. So probably, yes.
>>
>>110807060

>gunbuster
>happy ending

Incredibly bittersweet somehow.
>>
>>110808966
Well it has a pretty big (or pretty vocal) fan base but I feel it's a bit unfair to compare it with the rest of Gundam given how much it deviates, similar to how I would rather compare G Gundam with other super robot anime.
>>
>>110808751

>My internet is really bad, so I have to pick and choose what I download.

An internet cap or something?

I don't know why you'd use the bakabt wishlist over the likes of a notepad file.
>>
>>110809710
I honestly didn't even really think of that.
>>
>>110809326

The condensed story was for the better, the culture being the undermining point was great but the social experiment stage involving the Zentradi/Humans living together was a bit rocky.

DYRL was great for how they finished up the love story Hayase is second best girl in Macross.
>>
>>110809653

I think the vocal fanbase might stem from it being one of those "babbys first" series.

I feel like the only saving grace of the series was Diana's drills and the OST.
>>
>>110809128

Yeah that's pretty outdated. I saw the REAL chart of this going around, anybody got it?
