Fuck, I absolutely love shows that give each episode to a different director and let them loose. Yuasa did a really good job with this one. Not this one though. They spent about 3 minutes too long on getting Dandy and Meow firmly rooted into the plot. If they condensed that part a bit it would've been a 10/10 episode.

In the Japanese version, Dandy has an accent and sort of "draws out" the ends of his words.

In the dub, the voice actor just reads his lines. There's no voice acting going on save for the occasional 'baby'
I DO like what they did with QTs voice in the dub. Meows voice is better in the japanese as well, carries a more "carefree" tone whereas again the dub just has the VA saying his lines.

Also in the ep with multiple dandys, they got different voice actors for some of the dandys/meows/qts whereas the dub took the cheap route/cut corners and just reused all the same VAs.

And they also change lines here and there, so the humor in the dub seems to be aimed at a lower-age target audience.

The dub isn't horrible, but it's no Cowboy Bebop dub.

I know some Japanese as well. I agree the subs add things to it, but the dub also deviates from the original here and there and while some of the deviations are funny, some of them are dumber and dumberer level humor.

Also not sure what you mean about flavor. The main characters voice is much better in the japanese. QTs voice is much better in the dub, but when the main character is that much worse in the dub its unwatchable imo.

They did the same thing with Kamina in the GL dub. The guy just reads his lines with no intonation/inflection/accent at all.

The fundamental problem is that at least in Japan seiyuus usually train or go to school for this stuff. In America, you became a VA because you failed to make it in hollywood and you dont want to do porn. Japanese VA can be bad as well (SAO II I'm looking at you) but at least there is usually an attempt to act. So many American dubs are bored VAs literally just reading their lines outloud.

I'd rather have less pleasing voices than boring lines. Most of the Japanese dialog sounds close to stock phrases that you'd find in a Japanese textbook, but most people don't seem to realize this because the subtitles borrow from the dub a lot without translating literally.

I disagree that the dialogue in the original is that bad. It's not poetic by anymeans, but it's about what you'd expect for anime. It's not like the dub does this any better (for example, the D-N-A...Dandy sequence in the multi-dandy episode).

Anyone else here hoping for a Dr. Gel episode?
