What Pre-2000 Anime are you watching right now?
I'm cruising through Takarajima.
Good choice. Cyber City is fucking fantastic. The only bad thing about is that there's so little of it.
Just finished season 1 of Cardcaptor Sakura. About to watch the first movie.
going through the whole Tenchi Muyo series. never saw anything beyond the first 13 episodes of the original OVA.
call it nostalgia, but goddamn the japanese dub felt kinda bland. also,
>Washu will never violate me in a nurse outfit
Ghost in the Shell SAC for me. Just finished 1st Gig.
>Ghost in the Shell SAC
>October 1, 2002
working my way through LotGH. 30 something in and loving it so far. I hope it only gets better
I watched all of UC Gundam recently (bar Igloo) and I was surprised by the amount of hate ZZ gets on here and on /m/. I mean it starts a bit weird, especially coming off Zeta's ending, but in general I thought it was good. Jewdough is also easily my favourite Gundam pilot so far.
I get the feeling someone has decided they take exception to these threads and has decided to try to annoy enough people to get them reported and shunned by making multiple threads and having them 24/7 ever since that chart was made and posted to reddit.
Gundam wing and Outlaw Star (Just finished Outlaw Star so good)
This chart is what I'm looking for. Thanks anon.
Video Girl Ai. It's pretty great, delicious 90s girls.
Yeah that's great and all except general threads on /a/ are often outright banned and deleted on sight. I can see it happening in the future if this continues has happened to plenty of similar threads in the past on other niche topics.
Escaflowne. Watched Crest of the Stars last week.
Gundam ZZ (in fact, watching all U.C. in chronological order)
Great choice Anon.
It's the curse of the psycho gundam
Just watching pic related and CCS.
I love the Western feel to it and the soundtrack is one of my favourites. I can't decide if Priss or Nene are my favourite Bubblegums though.
How is it compared to Sins? I enjoyed it but I thought it was a little edgy in some areas.
As for me i'm working my way through Rose of Versailles, it's been fantastic so far and the French Revolution is kicking off soon so the plot's getting more interesting.
The Marie Antoinette half is interesting and all, but shit gets real once the focus shifts to Oscar.
Funny you should post a screencap from 22, i've just started that episode right now.
I like how Jeanne has basically became another du Barry.
Tomoko the cutest
In the manga she shows up in maybe four pages.
I wish I could be getting through the Kabocha Wine. It's about a big girl and her little man, and it's super comfy. He wants to be all super manly, and she just keeps acting like a perfect waifu. Only seven episodes of 95 were subbed, what a crime.
Weird to think now how onisamae is kinda similar to hanayoridango and mariasama in the idea of a girl stepping into a high society club, the difference is in the level of sadism of the authors.
In August 2008, Tomoko Kawakami was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which required surgery. During a three-year battle with cancer, most of her ongoing roles were replaced by other voice actresses, although Kawakami was able to do some voice work. She died on June 9, 2011 at the age of 41.
Brave Fighter of Legend Da-Garn
Dragonball Z (no joke, I've never seen any of the post-Cell saga eps before)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
In a worthless bit of info, the oldest anime I've watches so far is Genshi Shonen Ryu.
At least things have gotten a little more lighthearted over in ZZ land.
>future where space colonies are a daily part of life
>still hand washing clothes
Gundam you never fail to entertain.
I want Elle to clean my boxers in slight disgust
I remember that one.
>mfw the anime was broadcast in Arabic-speaking countries
Recently finished Kyou Kara Ore Wa.
Liked it a lot.
Still undecided what to pick up next.
Good luck, half a year and I'm only at 44 of season 1
My advice take it slow, marathoning City Hunter gets dry fast. Take it slow once you've watched 15 to 20 episodes, pace yourself and watch 1 to 3 at a time.
how do I take an mkv snapshot? I have several in 'my pictures' but I could never figure out what button I was hitting? I always just hit print screen and then pasted it into a jpg in photoshop. sorry for the off topic question.
Pointy ears and dragons. Also Sailor Moon.
Well that's a fucking lie.
Revolutionary Girl Utena. The end of the Black rose arc blew my mind.
I really like this picture
Yeah, it's a nice pick up after what a downer the ending to Zeta is. I'd watch this fucker in his own show having Zeon adventures and mishaps.
Just finished watching this today, it was alright. Gonna watch some more Patlabor later on and maybe some more Gundam 0079 as well.
Holy crap I was just randomly browsing randomly in Youtube and somehow got across the OP of that show.
It seems cute, maybe it's a sign I should check it out, but now you mention there's barely any subs, a shame...
It is. That reference is actually what made me read Berserk.
Needs moar brown Shinji
Ok, they live in space and don't know about giant robots?
Yeah, I'll cap it when I get there. He has had a rough season so far, wonder if he'll ever see his kids again.
>Dezaki died in 2011 from lung cancer
Posting best seiyuu. Blows many of these new faggot sounding over-feminine male voice actors out of the water.
Sakura Wars TV was pretty lame, but Sumire was great.
I agree. Best Dezaki work. I learned about it from /a/ years ago, and still love it. One of my favorites, I love how they made Jim seem more childish and turned Silver into an "father" or "big brother" figure, rather than the "weird uncle" persona he usually has.
About to watch hippies getting slashed and drug-laced cigarette smoking action.
Honestly, I really wanted to like it given the fact that I loved the mechanical design, but everything comedic was done better if Xabungle, and every dire situation lacked the dread and gravity that Zeta had. I can appreciate a change in mood, but given the characters involved, and what they had been through prior, it was off-putting at the best of times, and damn inconsistent at the worse of times. The only way to enjoy ZZ is to completely forget everything that happened prior to it, but considering that it references Zeta at every turn, it's next to impossible.
Fuck no, /ar/ would be quickly infested by reddit and ANN goers, I come to /a/ to discuss anime with people who aren't insufferable cunts, as strange as it may seem, not participate in a circlejerk filled with them. One or two threads once in a blue moon is fine, as an excess of it would only deteriorate the quality of discussion. Rather than pining for a board split fueled by dissatisfaction with /a/, why don't you actually contribute to the quality of the board?
... Why would /ar/ attract reddit, specifically? /vr/ didn't, and I can assure you, a significant amount of /r/anime uses browse /a/, and those who don't would be interested in /ar/.
Doublas you've watched 6 episodes in three weeks step it up.
Blame Berserk and summer classes. Those last three weeks, all my free time was spent catching up with Berserk. It was worth it though.
Because the "it's old, so that means it's objectively better" mentality is rampant among normalfags. Also, /vr/ became a chore to browse since they ran out of interesting things to discuss very quickly and tended to devolve in shitposting. I do not want to see that happening to /a/.
What? /vr/ is one of my favourite boards. Here's some posts from the first few pages that are great.
In any case, the "old must be good" mentality isn't quite as popular as you think, since most people don't even watch it. Source: looking at myanimelists connected to redditor's accounts.
>In any case, the "old must be good" mentality isn't quite as popular as you think, since most people don't even watch it. Source: looking at myanimelists connected to redditor's accounts.
This so much. And even then, most of the "it's better because its old" fags only watched Cowboy Bebop and Eva and nothing else.
The attempt to latch onto anything retro seems like something people who actively use reddit would flock to, and a given for people who use ANN. Beyond who it might attract, I simply don't see how a board split would increase the quality of conversation at hand. There would inherently be a limit to what can be discussed, and old ground will be tread all too quickly. And, hell, this is actually why generals were discouraged on /a/ for such a long time. And why Precure threads post-Smile are damn awful.
I can confirm this. I read almost a thousand comments on the reddit post and there were about a hundred people who asked about Bebop, EVA, and GiTS but nothing else.
Perhaps you should stop judging people you don't known and/or interact with?
>There would inherently be a limit to what can be discussed, and old ground will be tread all too quickly
We've had "Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads" for two years after the release of Madoka. Enough siad.
Only mecha/sci fi stuff. There's other stuff from that era (shoujo, hentai, comedy) that isn't and is at best mentioned passingly there.
/a/ has discussed several of those in these threads, though.
>We've had "Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads"
But is that the ONLY thing that we discuss? No, it's not. /a/ always has something new to talk about because new content is being produced on a daily basis. Something like /ar/ wouldn't have this luxury.
But that was the problem for me with /vr/. I was seeing those same types of threads all the time. It gets repetitive seeing the same stuff everyday and it stops being interesting after a certain point. It's not a bad board or anything, just a repetitive one.
>We've had "Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads" for two years after the release of Madoka. Enough said.
Thanks for proving my damn point, as those threads haven't had any new, or meaningful discussion in ages. That's the type of shit I don't want to see happening, nor the type of place I want to be slotted to whenever I want to discuss older anime. I'd much rather get one brief thread like this a day than a thousand of threads like those repeated 24/7.
I used to actually like monster girls before those threads. Those generals actually managed to break a sexual fixation that has been with me since I was four.
I'm watching through Armegeddon off and on, what the hell was up with the quality drop in episode 6? It looked damn awful.
Anyone wanna comment on stuff in this they'd like to change? I'm slowly working on a version 4 that may not be finished ever, but it'd be good to know some things that are disputed. I've alreay- wait, this is the one I personally changed for someone, with magic user's club. Crazy. Anyway, point out things you don't like, and I'll consider changing it.
P.S., here's a list of shows that only 1 person recommended and no one commented on, and are therefore of unknown quality for me.
>Kareshi Kanojo no Jijo
>Heidi (too popular according to most)
>Those Who Hunt Elves
This seems like a good thread to ask: I watched Gosenzosama Banbanzai recently and I loved it a lot, and it made me realize that the OVA format of the 80s-early 90s probably allowed a lot more potential for artistic freedom. I know most of the OVAs made in that time period were shovelware trash just to keep companies running, but is there a decent amount of material out there like Gosenzosama Banbanzai?
>I come to /a/ to discuss anime with people who aren't insufferable cunts
>people who aren't insufferable cunts
Where did you find people like that on /a/? Scratch that. Where did you find people like that on 4chan?
Having read the manga, I know it's pretty awesome. Are the anime really that bad? Shame, if so, since the series themselves are great, especially some of the Getter Robo sequels (New Getter Robo, Getter Robo Armageddon).
I'll consider switching them out, since they're both pretty popular anyway.
Anon, that's not how it works.
Year 0 is the beginning of the first century AD. That makes year 100 the second century AD.
That makes year 200 the third century AD, so on and so forth.
1900 is the first year of the 20th century.
Gozensosama should stay, it's genuinely good, unique and still fairly obscure, aka everything people look for in charts.
I agree with this. Something 80's Sunrise like Vifam and Layzner (personal favorites) would suffice in their place.
No, you retard.
The 1st century would be years 1 - 100.
The 20th century would be years 1901 - 2000.
There is no year 0. That's fucking dumb.
>The 20th century was the period between January 1, 1901 and December 31, 2000
Urusei Yatsura is a classic.
I don't like Gosenzosama but it's unique at least
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijo is good
Heidi is a classic
Oruchuban Ebichu is good
Didn't watch Shamanic Princess
Those Who Hunt Elves is good
The Toei series are completely different. The only thing they share is the same gist of plot. Even the robot and character designs are different to an extent. They're just monster of the week shows made for Saturday morning cartoons.
It'd be nice ifKaze to Ki no Uta was on it. I'd also suggest changing the Project A-Ko picture because it doesn't really look like it, unless it was from one of the later ones or something. Five Star Stories would also be another good one to add but I don't really have complaints against any of the other sci-fi/mech entries.
One more I'd suggest is the Devilman: The Birth
Urusei Yatsura is pretty good, don't remove it.
The two Toei series are now in doubt due to >>110582339's input, and their standing popularity. I'll see how it goes if I change them.
Initial D is very dramatic. It's even listed as "Drama" on wikipedia. Plus, I don't have a racing/sports category.
Was watching crest of the stars. Probably going to drop it though. The knowledge most of it isn't, and never will be, adapted and this prison arc probably going to be shit has made me lose interest.
I'm currently watching Kanashimi no Belladonna. It really good. The way it uses scrolling stills makes it seem like a medieval tapestry. I'm really impressed with its direction thus far. The music and art are fantastic as well.
Belladonna is a bit more than casual.
I would suggest adding Burn Up, All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Sol Bianca, Agent Aika, Birdy The Mighty, Di Gi Charat, Marmalade Boy, Iketeru Futari, Roujin Z, Wicked City, Megazone 23, Dangaioh, Iczer-1, Dream Hunter Rem, and Tekkaman Blade.
Maybe revise genres. There's a lot of garbage in action genre. And why is Dirty Pair in comedy genre? It's an action adventure show like Lupin III, City Hunter, and Space Adventure Cobra.
Maybe add Cream Lemon because while it is very erotic it's still a classic and it featured talents like Hideaki Anno.
Maybe remove Mazinger Z and Getter Robo because 1) They're super well known and 2) They're not even completely subbed. Remove Gundam because it's even more well known.
Maybe remove Daitarn 3 or replace some other mecha show with Zambot 3 because while Daitarn 3 is good Zambot 3 is more historically significant. Tomino got his "Kill 'Em All" nickname there.
>New Getter Robo
Both of'm are too recent.
I'll keep those in mind. There's "garbage" in the action section probably just because you don't like those kinds of shows. I find "shitty" action shows to be quite good.
I won't remove Gundam because it's more of a recommendation for Zeta and ZZ, the series as a whole, which a lot of people haven't seen.
Dirty Pair is in Comedy because I thought it was funny. I may change it from 14x7 to 15 or 16x7, so perhaps I will move it to Sci Fi.
All of your recommendations have been noted, except Cream Lemon, because Creamy Mami has filled our cream quota.
Someone recommended and others agreed. I think bad shows have their charm, though. My friends and I watched MD Geist and everyone loved it.
>and I was surprised by the amount of hate ZZ gets on here and on /m/
>Annoying characters (who never die)
>Conflict is pretty much just a joke
>Some REALLY boring episodes
It gets better in the middle but turns to shit towards the end, it's far too inconsistent in comparison to 0079 and Zeta.
I'd be in favor of switching Gundam out for one of Tomino's other series (my vote is for Zambot 3). Gundam is just too well known, and it even has charts dedicated to it.
Alright. Since remove seems to be the consensus, and someone else recommended Zambot, and because you provided a 250, I'll change it. It's a damn shame, that Gundam thumbnail was perfect.
>I won't remove Gundam because it's more of a recommendation for Zeta and ZZ, the series as a whole, which a lot of people haven't seen.
Ok, but what's the point of informing them of its existence? There's a Gundam show almost every year. If people didn't bother watching it when Unicorn came out they're never going to bother watching it.
I guess spring season 2000 sorta counts
I've been postponing watching Ranma 1/2 for sometime now. I watch it dubbed because that's how I used to when I was a kid. Good days
>Liking the Black Rose arc
That was a low point, I'll admit, but only because I didn't really comprehend the silver-haired dude. After reading about him on ohtori.nu I have a new appreciation for that arc.
Currently just Cutie Honey and Steel Angel Kurumi, if that counts. I was halfway through Maison Ikkoku when my hard drive died last year and I haven't gotten around to redownloading it yet. I'm so frustrated.
I just finished 0079, gonna move on to Zeta tomorrow.
Just finished watching Angel's Egg about three days ago.
Still trying to wrap my head around it.
That OST is fucking chilling.
At least he exacts his revenge in an entertaining fashion.
It's on my to do list, but I'm taking a break from space/mech once I finish UC Gundam I think.
Well, I guess you could still watch the last episode, but be sure to watch the second movie, Be Invoked. Like many of Tomino's early works, it got canceled before it was finished, so they had to wrap things up shoddily. The second movie picks up at the start of the last episode but actually gives it a good ending. If you're watching Ideon to see how similar it is to Eva, you should definitely watch Be Invoked.
I always thought people exaggerated how cool Char was but goddamn does he live up to the hype.
He's been the most enjoyable part of the franchise for myself.
Just finished Belladonna. Never have I taken so many screenshots over the course of one movie. It was fantastic.
Why haven't you watched Cipher yet?
Okay, after a few hours I have uniformly aligned the chart into a pixel-perfect standard. 30 pixels in between each entry, 75 in between each row.
So, before I start chronologically ordering them, throw out some recs. After his is done I ain't touchin this chart ever again.
Don't knock it until you experience.
When I originally made the list I didn't care for guidelines, I just fixed it up so it's in order. Using guidelines.
Now before I move them in chronological order I'm taking additional recommendations. So I can do it all at once. I guess no one is interested, though.
I don't get Igloo's hate. Is it the PS2-level visuals?
>Why would /ar/ attract reddit, specifically?
You even saw it in the last thread of this with those fags supporting streaming, recommendations, "helping everybody", emoticons, and so on, and they obviously came here from the thread. And as others have said, /ar/ would just be generals for a dozen old 'classics' and dead threads everywhere else.
Because Peter Gabriel > Phil Collins
The episode previews really spoiled absolutely everything.
>supporting streaming, recommendations, "helping everybody", emoticons, and so on,
First of all, most of reddit mocks streamers. Second of all, recommendation threads are downvoted to hell. Third of all, emoticons are not even something that matters.
It is a grand adventure.
You won't be disappointed.
>most of reddit mocks streamers.
The top thread on their board is about Crunchyroll, with many of the posters in there being streamers.
And the person talking about streaming Redline and helping every rec thread he sees wasn't from /a/, and the chartmaker had both posted the chart on reddit and was posting in both threads at once, so I wonder who it could've been?
He's legitimately my favourite character next to Sayla and Mirai. I thought it was all hype, but he really is cool. Pity he disappears for ages during the show.
I'm not attention seeking. Who am I, anon? I am anonymous.
I'm really unsatisfied with the current chart. I had to miss a lot of good anime and, V3 at least, has very poor aligning, which many people have commented on. I'm adding ~10 or so anime, aligning things properly, and then disappearing forever. How is that being an attention seeker?
You should have already realised that no matter how many times you edit, change, remove or add things your chart will always be called shit and people will always complain about it. You can't fix a chart its made to be picked apart.
>I'm adding more anime guys, if you want one included tell me
I am, right now. I have foolz archives open of a few previous discussions and am combing through them. Just need 2 more SOL-esque anime and I'm good to go.
I've actually had a really good response, It's my own personal dissatisfaction that's led me to do this.
So is Judau's newtype ability to get all that pussy?
No really, it is quite evident now that you are dragging this out in order to try to maintain relevance by waving edits to a chart around and derailing threads in the process. If you want to change it just change it then post it when you are done, if not fuck off.
And this shit happened to every chart in the past. I explained this last thread, like the other anon said, they're never complete. you're not going to have some "definitive list".
There have been entire threads complaining about how shit it is.
You aren't talking about retro anime you are talking about your chart which while containing retro anime is not itself retro anime.
Votoms is another series where the previews are a must. Come to think of it, Dougram is the same way. Takahashi must have a thing for them.
By-fucking-God it's done. Version 4, final version. I hope you all like it.
Changelog: Added 14 anime based on peoples input, made everything actually symmetrical, fixed a few typos, added a date for 3000, made everything in chronological order.
This is the final, definitive version. I'm not touching this ever again. Goodnight!
The new anime:
Space Runaway Ideon
Oh My Goddess
You're Under Arrest
Cat Girl Niku Niku
Galaxy Express 999
Well, color me surprised; it looks like there actually are some. Wikipedia says that the first two were the same story as the anime and the third is set between episodes 16 and 18, though.
The bastard child "sequel" show which must not be named was also based on a novel series, which is purportedly quite a bit better than the show (not that that's saying much).
>If more people watched older shows they wouldn't be retarded weebs.
What is your meaning of weeb here? Casual? Because if anything all those older untranslated shows would make someone want to know japanese.
