How to have a healthy family life in this industry?

I know young'uns are willing to work unpaid overtime out of 'passion' (idiots), but it's not a legal requirement, right?

I'm perfectly happy wrapping up work 1 or 2 hours at the end of the day, but I'd hate to be forced into overtime with my job on the line, trading an evening with the wife/kids, instead to stress myself over a project that doesn't mean anything to me, it's just a product to make $$$ in the end. Seems exploitative.
>>
You forgot to tell us what your job is !
>>
it depends.

in a small company you are more likely to be pumped and dumped, shit contracts, revshare, shutting down the company without notice etc.

it depends on your skills level and how far you can get.
also you have to be adaptive, some areas are more lucrative than others
>>
When will you faggots realize that his "industry" is saturated as fuck?

If you don't have superhuman amounts of luck, talent and experience you won't get anywhere. Even really good ones have it hard nowadays. The train left years ago.

Try to become an allrounder in video editing, some 3D stuff, marketing etc. and then apply to your local shitbox advertizing agencies and shit.
Also expect to be underpaid like fuck.
>>
>>579549
>saturated as fuck

dude just look at artstation job offerings

https://www.artstation.com/jobs

there's loads of jobs
you just gotta git gud
>>
>>579543
The answer is simply to find companies that are less glamourous (Archvis, Mobile Gaming). Yes they're boring to work for, but they're falling over themselves to pick up staff who otherwise want to go straight to AAA.

My last 3 jobs have all been 9-5, sometimes less.
>>
>>579624
Can confirm
I work in Archviz and we really need realtime artists and UE4 specialists
>>
>>579624
>>579637
>archviz
not op, but I would rather kill myself. Go back to school, get a degree in engineering or something useful and dont look back. Keep this as a hobby.
>>
>>579641
>I would rather kill myself

Why? You could be a part of creating something actually getting built and impacting peoples lives beyond entertainment on a screen.
And Archviz is harder than you think it is.
>>
>>579715
Its also a lot more boring, but whatever, how is the pay? 9-5 sounds good...
>>
>>579752
its shit and overrun by pajeet
>>
>>579715
archviz might be fun and interesting if you add an extra element to it like realtime rendering, panoramas and interactive environments.
but overall, its quiet boring. eventually you have your formula down and its just asset recycling, with the same lightning setups. and it makes for a stale and boring work.
but its better than most wagecuck jobs for sure
>>
>>579755
>It's better than most wagecuck jobs for sure
Don't be so hasty. No benefits, no recognition, no room to move up, no union, no retirement, no 401k.
>>
>>579752
pay is okay. I got my own little business and I pay pretty decently.

>>579753
pajeet can't compete. They might be doing real estate "archviz", but actual Archviz needs to be close to the clients and architects to be of use. Can't coordinate that with a bunch of pajeets across the world. Plus, big projects are all under some NDA so outsourcing is not really an option.

>>579755
realtime is where the industry is headed imo. It says a lot when the biggest architecture firm in the world has their own department using substance, unreal and unity.
And it's not boring if you manage to get decent projects. I can understand how living room #323423 would be boring tho.

>>579756
>union
What are you, a communist?
Besides, this is all company specific. And please show me the 3D job where you get a fucking union.
>>
>>579886
The game industry is overrun by Pajeets, a ton of stuff is getting outsourced now. How would Archviz be any different?
>>
>>579889
Like I said, it depends a lot on the specific projects. But if you're doing a realtime viz of a big project that is undergoing many iterations, it makes more sense to do so in house. Actual Archviz is working hand in hand with architects and clients and is informing the design and decision making process.

Unfortunately, 90% of "archviz" you see on the internet is just real estate marketing - high quality furniture rendered in generic residential spaces.

The only thing I would outsource is asset creation.
>>
>>579893
>mainly interested in asset creation
fuck
>>
>>579901
Go do it.
There's a distinct lack of quality, game ready assets for Archviz. The realtime market is still babby tier.

Imo it's just the only thing that makes sense to outsource, because assets don't go through iterations.
>>
>>579886
>What are you, a communist?
>Besides, this is all company specific. And please show me the 3D job where you get a fucking union.
If you don't have a union, you will get fucked and your job is almost guaranteed to completely suck.

Maybe if you're a commie with no skills who can't produce shit

Besides, I'm literally the boss

Unions are like cults. I remember a colleague passing me a pamplhet telling me to join (looked at the monthly membership and NOPE'd the fuck out), 1 week later shes pestering me asking if I joined yet, said memberships too high and went on a tirade about benefits. Week later some other dude starts pestering me and offering discount to join. Like WTF these pieces of shit are after my money. I'm a probability guy and I know for the price I'm paying I will never need to use them or have savings of my own to utilise.

fuck unions, they are cash grabbing scams
>>
>>579886
Gimme a number.... a month, 40 hours per week...how much do you pay?
I am seriously thinking about it.... game art is overrun by hipsters and the pay is low.
>>
>>579955
~2.4k€ a month starting before taxes for a junior
>>
>>579886
>>579956

How did you position yourself into ArchViz, mate?
Thinking of doing it myself. Do I need nice renders, what would a company look for?
>>
>>579957
I just got a lot of good things handed to me desu. Family got a succesfull arch office and I'm an architect myself. So one day I just got more into 3D and we decided to found an archviz company attached to the big office. So my way into this was very easy mode. And while I'm okay at 3D I'm still also an architect and manager, so I would not call myself a pure 3D artist.

But as I said earlier, for large projects it makes a lot of sense to do Archviz in house, and I think all major firms have their own archviz departments these days. And they're all dabbling in realtime Archviz with the game engines.

What I'm currently looking for is UE4 engine specialists and realtime game artists.
It turns out that architects may know buildings and basic 3D modeling in their CAD softwares, but that data is utter shit for game engines. So we actually need people who can produce gameready content, AAA materials/shaders, who know how to optimise a large scene, who know how to properly unwrap everything. At this point we're pretty much making games desu.

But you should also be somewhat of a generalist. Even big firms with their own archviz departments probably won't have huge pipelines like other CG studios, where every aspect of CG has their own team. So knowing a bit of everything can help a lot. Also post production stuff, like the Adobe suites, understanding of photography and cinematic techniques will be very helpful.

My advice would be to look up major architecture firms like Gensler, BIG, Foster etc. Should probably just google them. I'd bet they have a couple of job openings for CG people.
>>
>>579961
you have to make a separation between a modeler and a texture artist.
at the end of the day, the same people who can do both won't work for any arch office.
>>
>>579962
thats your opinion
>>
>>579950
that doesnt make any sense. There are police and fireman unions, construction unions, athletic unions for NBA, NFL, NHL, etc. These all keep the worker from getting fucked. Anyone not part of one is an idiot
>>
>>579964
unions are the reason this country is turning to shit and all jobs are going overseas
>>
>>579962
thats probably the reason its well paid. if no one wants to do it, it becomes well paid and the other way around.

>>579964
you also basically stated the reason not to join one. unions are for workers, that dont have enough power on their own. if you are smart enough and have enough power to negiotiate on your own a union is just wasting your money.
>>
>>579964
>my farts keep away dinosaurs
>proof it
>do you see any dinosaurs around here?!
>>
>>579561
and by loads you mean like 100 jobs, most with some kind of specialisation required and you are competing with other people globaly, and in the end you are not getting paid well or garaunteed a secure job. You will also have to relocate 90% of the time.
>>
>>580037
Please tell me in what field you can expect a secure job without notable skills?
>>
>>579965
thats not true at all. If a job is easy enough, it will be shipped to pajeet and the yellowman, no questions asked. They love easy, repetitive tasks like archviz and factory work that no respecting murrican would do.

>>579966
>you also basically stated the reason not to join one. unions are for workers, that dont have enough power on their own. if you are smart enough and have enough power to negiotiate on your own a union is just wasting your money.

you join a union so your boss doesnt fire you on the spot for not working 80 hours a week with no benefits like he wants
