it's not just overwatch, and I'm pretty sure a good number of them have less than a year of animation experience + no experience in rigging (sfm comes with valve's standard biped and the people that know how to rig post them to the workshop).

If you want to become a porn-shitting robot for the enjoyment of assholes online, find a relatively uncommon animated show and use its characters in SFM for 30 second (or less!!) loops. You don't even need sound design or modeling experience, just credit the modelers and leave it silent. People will eventually make you popular, especially if you are actually good at animating and have the characters look alive and not robots.

Also apparently a stupid amount of people like futa ("I just like feminine dicks, it's not gay I promise!") so at least allow that for commissions.

That's a little misleading. He generated a huge following by having 2D art and a semi-fun sexy game.
Additionally he was extremely lucky / clever to make his game such that 1) it takes a little bit of work for the pay off (until you use the Cheat menu) 2) he made it modular and extensible so it's able to easily support custom made fursonas 3) it's able to represent a lot of different-ish fetishes (tickling, growth, milking, electro, post orgasm torture, bondage, etc) so it's got more appeal than an ultra niche project that only shows a single sex act
