I've seen a lot online about how to download the 3d models. But not all cities have a ton of buildings made as 3d models, most have the satellite image with some cheap elevation data which barely resambles the size and shape of building and trees. It's shit, but that's the best i've got and i need it.
anyone knows how to rip this data? i'm either able to get the texture, or the 3d models, but not this elevation data.
thanks in advance
Agreeing with this. I'm wanting the city models, ground elevation, buildings, those could easily be remodeled, but having the proper ground elevation and building positions and everything is what would make this. Wanting to remodel a small portion of a city for a game mod, using Google Earth's stuff would be a good simple skeleton to get started.

exactly. Tbh i could work with it as it is, im not aiming for any 4k aesthetics, i just need to vaguely represent the real world, actual places. And doing it by hand would be a hassle
There was software which could snapshot 3d info from your graphics card, and output it to 3ds max or some shit. The result was very much usable, but I dont remember the name of the software

3d ripper dx? ninja ripper? it can rip the actual 3d models but not the terrain with elevation (as far as i know/maaged to make it work)

Dem Earth + $$$$$

interesting, trying it now, will post results
>>570159
the OSM2world thing doesn't work very well, it's not shohwing any 3D whatsoever. And the OBJ export from it is not opening on maya. I'll try with my other computer that somehow has more openGL capabilities and shit.. if that doesn't work im fucked
Hey OP, are you an Arma modder by any chance?
PS: I'm also interested in extracting heightmaps from GE.
>>570043
What you're looking for is SRTM elevation data. Google it.Plenty avaliable for free. Just find way to convert raster elevation maps to mesh. QGIS with some plugins will probably do the trick. Or some easy coding.
>>570292
Google Earth has plenty of locations with very high res terrain that you cannot get for free.
>>570505
This is exactly what I need to, honestly. I want to make a racetrack myself, something for Assetto Corsa. Wouldn't that be cool? Racing through a realworld location, say racing through a real reconstructed area of Helsinki, for example. Google Earth lets you see little 3d trees, buildings, and even the road signs over main roadways exist, though low detail renditions.

Fuck Google - the USGS (United States Geological Survey) has freely available DEM data for the whole of the US.
Google it.

this

ideally what you want is lidar data + dem to go into cityengine
its a complex process but you can do it.
>>571796
to elaborate, you would use arcgis to create footprints from lidar data in the instance that there isnt any OSM (open street map) data available.
OSM would be the quickest way to build a city accurately
>>571798
but you would only get textured boxes for buildings, in cityengine you would need to either build facades to distribute to buildings procedurally (either from zoning designation or random values etc) or use them as placeholders to drop in full new buildings etc
>>571792
>Fuck Google
>Google it.
>>572024
can you google? lol
lidar is a type of data survey done with lasers
dem is elevation data
cityengine and arcgis are programs which you could tell from the context
if theres enough OSM data available for the area which you want to model lidar isnt relevant. you can import osm into cityengine ( theres a blender plugin available also) to build the primatives. then you can select the building footprints and scatter trees (this is where cityengine comes in handy because you can place things with very granular control, like whether the building is in a commerical zone or etc) or you could do a quick script in blender. you would only end up with square buildings but in cityengine you can build procedural facades that get distributed based on sets of rules you choose, blender prob has something like that but i only have a passing knowledge of that program
it sounds complicated but it isnt you could have a decent city in an hour or two
>>572033
yeah i can google man but it brought up complicated links and im kinda busy to do a research on things i haven't even heard being named before. Just learning how to work with all that would take me an hour or two, nevermind having it working.
Where do you suggest i search for OSM data for my desired area? What this guy >>570159 suggested might work with this software you suggest, i assume? is there a better place or way?
i'll check this out in depth next week, so if you could keep it alive and perhaps give me more hints and opinions until then it would be great.
>>571798
Only problem with OSM is unless someone actually enters the height for a building the all default to one story.
>>572062
>free online
for example the us national geographic survey
>>570043
I would kill for an RTS like Wargame that uses actual Google map data desu
If you live in the UK and are student then use digimap. It has a bunch of options for getting height maps in a variety of formats. Also has a building heights download, its just simple extruded blocks, but the heights are roughly correct and works as a good guide. I believe they also have just started offering lidar data as well but i haven't checked it out yet.

hey chill man, im full of finals and a newly found job and shit. I'll have time to dig into all this in a few days. I haven't even sat on my desktop computer on which i think i should try all this since my laptop isn't as powerful.
Consider this technique. It appears the youtube video is not longer available, but you can read about it here.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/benkreimer/google-earth-3d-for-vr?utm_term=.vievPG3NE#.wa6k2Pz76
What i did was use a software like fraps, but adjust the frames per second to be relatively low.
Go to google earth and record a video, and rotate and pan around the area of interest with constant 45 degree angle.
Run video file through FFmpeg to extract the frames.
Take all programs into a photogrammetry application like photoscan.
It's definitely "download and go"
Take all photos* into....
I thought Sketchup Pro did this.
>>573250
lmao
thats insane
>>573247
wow that's one crazy approach. I'll keep in in consideration since what i've been trying so far didn't quite work out
>>571792
>Fuck Google
>Google it
>>573247
remake doesn't seem to wanna run on my computer so i'll try to find some photogrammetry alternative, perhaps 123catch if that still exists? i remember i made it run on a cheap tablet, so i assume it would run on my not exactly high end but "i can 3d model and edit videos and stuff" tier computer.
Besides this software issue, the approach seems like it shouldn't give me much trouble, it's just using a software for what it's meant to be used, except it's a 3D model being 3D modeled again
Pretty sure you can get a bump map and a terrain map and clouds from NASA
>>573770
Ah here are all the textures https://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_cat.php?categoryID=1484
yep I do the shadowplay screen cap rotation at various GEarth mouse zooms, 60fps then into premier pro and crop. export at a 6 or 8 fps as jpgs and then crunch overnight in agisoft... export obj then to wherever. seems tedious but sometimes very useful. pic related
>>573935
well i don't have Nvidia or any GPU whatsoever except a built in thing. Will i be able to run this agisoft software? or any other software that does this? i don't care if it takes 9 hours as long as it just runs. Your stuff looks pretty good.
I'll go research about it now, don't start yelling at me to google
>>573988 here
apparently not. Anyone knows some free (or available on the pirate bay) software that would run on.. maybe not a toaster, i know.. but the lowest specs possible? Worst case scenario i can ask my dad to render this shit on his i7, but i'd like to avoid that if possible. I have an i3 with 3gb ram.
>>570505
>I think...
No you don't
Mountains look the same as buildings to a radar.
Git gud at reading with understanding
>>576574
Except buildings don't have near the same ammount of volume and heigh, therefore the "radar" needs a lot more resolution for said building not to look like a blurry noisey piece of shit.
If you're gonna act all smart you better be more respectful so you don't look like an idiot when you're proved wrong instead.
Also, i tried one of these and it gave me a completely noisey block. Unuseable. Maybe there's some other better database out there i dunno.
I repeat my "photogrammetry" question. Anyone knows a low specs way to do it? 123D catch used to work but it's cloud service is dead now. Since january
