No matter if Daz or any other program, posing the hands is the biggest funkiller.
It's so fucking tedious and annoying.

>>
>>566382

Why are the moderators on your forums such insufferable pricks?
>>
>>566382

Are you guys ever planning to make real software that's useful? Daz Studio is like something from 2005. Hexagon is a joke. Bryce is almost entirely useless now and Carrara is like someone described what a 3D program is to a 5 year old and then that 5 year old tried to make it.

Studio is your flagship and it's absolute shit. Almost no animation features, no physics, no IK. You can't import and export FBX and Collada without the rig exploding.

Does anyone at your company actually know how to program or is all you guys do is make new versions of Victoria for people to keep buying shit for?
>>
>>566389
I don't really deal with any of them. I know some people at the company are mods but most are remote from what I know
>>
>>566382
besides sales, are there any ways to get pro packages for much lower than usual sale cost?
>>
>>566390
Haha. That's spot on. So there are 3 dedicated software engineers. The main reason why Daz studio is suffering is because we have a CEO that has no interest in Daz anymore. We are moving on to "greener pastures" morph and other projects are what we are focused on. The 3 software engineers are swamped and are stuck in office politics. They can't do what they want or need to to keep Daz studio up to date.
>>
>>566392
Email Customer Service and ask nicely. Most people that work at Daz are sick of the management and don't care that much. If you ask nicely and get the right person at the right time you just might get what you want.
>>
>>566382

What do you do there?
>>
>>566401
I don't want to say
>>
>>566394

So does this mean DAZ will leave the market making room for the even more crippled poser to flourish?
>>
>>566128
maybe fix that f'd up part on the car
>>
>>566382
Why is your posing system SO SHITTY?! What's wrong with traditional IK rigs?
>>
>>566443

I'm not that guy, but you do realize you can use the shells of the bodyparts themselves as controller shapes, and pose them directly with a rotation widget like you would in Maya humankIK rigs, right? And pinning the feet/hands and then using a translation widget to move them is very, very close in feel to traditional IK.
>>
>>566444
Or the devs could just, y'know, implement a half-decent IK rig to begin with.

I'm not saying there aren't workarounds, but doesn't it bother you that you even have to do all this bullshit just so that it will emulate a better, already existing system for IK rigs? Why even have the full-retard version when it's inferior in every way?
>>
>>566446

It doesn't bother me because I don't use their software for posing or animation. I export the models as fbx, import the fbx to maya, and define it in humanIK, Sculpt a few corrective blend shapes for the knees, hips/buttocks, elbows and shoulders in zbrush, then wire them up as being driven by the skeleton's position, and you're golden for animating in maya. The whole process takes like 2 hours per character I want to use, and then I never have to do it again.
>>
>>566441
No, I don't think so. Even though the management at Daz wants to move as far from studio they know they can't because of the money.
>>
>>566443
>>566444
>>566446
>>566448
Any complaint about how bad the software is isn't because the software engineers or the developers don't know what they're doing but that they can't do what they need to do because of inner office politics.

Hey guys, I'm trying out Daz and ran into a problem with Tongue Control for G3F and i13's Squish. I
stole
and installed them, but daz doesn't seems to recognize these morphs in the shaping tab. The files are located in the data/daz3d/genesis 3/female/morphs folder, to which I can't navigate through content library, however I can see i13's Squish in "Products" dropdown, and by adding "data" folder in "Daz Studio Formats" as Base Directory I can navigate to the Tongue Controls morphs folder. But getting to them this way doesn't seem to do anything. Is this happening because I'm a filthy pirate or maybe changing my content folder from default to custom fucked something up? But everything else located in the same folder and seems to be working.

The people behind Poser have openly talked about this happening with Poser. They call it the Poison Pill. If Poser stops being profitable for Smith Micro and nobody wants to buy it and publish it themselves, they might just do the open source thing.

>They are gonna keep pumping out schlock for this program for as long as they can. DAZ will be here for years and years.

We both know the only content not made by PAs are the figures. DAZ was supposed to be a content shop but it turned into a vendor platform for PAs as soon as Dan and Chris realized they couldn't afford a staff of Michael Lanes.

OK, here's an actual question since you want to show off. What new features are coming with DS 5 and what will Genesis 4 bring besides more figures entirely designed to video game render engines?

>Integrated dynamic cloth simulation- no more need for a plugin!
>Dynamic hair- Add that extra touch of realism!

Probably varies from person to person but I love the dolly dressup and scene posing. Experimenting with different lighting setups and HDRI.

>>
>>567141
>But do ya all ever aspire to work on creating full on models from scratch

It's not as simple as sculpting a body and making sure the loops are in the right place. You have to rig its basic armature, then weightmap all the joints to bend naturally, texture and then, THEN, make all the clothes or fight with getting existing ones to conform.

Any tips for rendering speed improvements?
I've got a Geforce 980 and generally render pretty fast with single characters and HDRI but when adding a few more characters render time takes a dramatic dive.
In this case, three women in shiny catsuits with large breasts. Perhaps the shiny/reflectiveness is hurting my render speed? pic somewhat related.
>>
>>567179
it depends

there are two types of HDRI

1.HDRI that is basic and have 2-3 basic colors, usually a gradient

2. an HDRI that is a 360 paranoma from reflection capture

usually the second is much better in every way. you should also adjust the rotation of your hdri for better results

>>
>>567179
Highly reflective surfaces don't require much compute power - a straight reflection is just a 1:1 ray trace of whatever else is in the scene.

Materials with complex diffusion setups; subsurface scattering etc.... that's what eats your processor cycles.
>>
>>567185

Usually have an idea just by touring through what I have. Sometimes it's a location pack that gives me an idea, then I run through the characters I have, pick one that I think looks good/fits my idea, and start tweaking and customising it. One I have 'the look' I come up with a costume and figure out a scene to put them in.
Look at the Genetech pics near the top for s few things I did recently-ish.
>>
>>567223
Cool, so I ought to just continue looking at other work and the world around me for inspiration.
>>
>>567225
Absolutely! You never know what will spark your imagination!
>>
I need good genitalia for DAZ studio, like the stuff on renderotica. The genitals in the pro packs are kind of meh.
>>
>>567202
It's all very organic.

I have a vague idea. I try for a pose, a character, a location, and then it doesn't work, so I finagle for a bit. Sometimes it won't work at all, and after 2+ hours of trying various things I give up.

And sometimes it just clicks. That pose, with that camera, is actually pretty cool, and I can add another character, and another, and look at that hand, I can put something in here, and that dress is perfect, and I need a swimsuit, I'll download one, etc.

Sometimes it won't work whatever I do, and it's pretty frustrating when that happens, and sometimes it will work even if I don't try hard.

Never fear of starting from scratch, or changing or removing a large part of your scene because it doesn't fit. And never fear of learning new things every day.

I'm at work, but if I remember tonight I'll post my wip giantess to give an example of something that just clicked.

I can't believe I got Daz to run on Linux Mint by just running it through PlayOnLinux (Wine), even with iray working.

Still not usable since the application hangs on bigger projects but when it actually loads, it renders almost as quickly as in Windows which is baffling.

How come the orbit camera is all janked in Daz Studio?

I feel like it should orbit around whatever you have selected, but it doesn't. Sometimes it orbits around the center of the scene, sometimes it's offset as fuck. I don't even know. It's all janked.
>>
>>567573
Alright, I think I managed to figure it out. Holy shit this is stupid.

The orbit camera will center on wherever your last position was in the viewpoint as dictated by the WASD controls. Basically, if you want to orbit around something, you have to zoom all the way in on it using the WASD controls, then zoom back out with the SCROLL WHEEL in order to not affect the orbit camera centering.

The orbit camera will then recenter based on where you last positioned the camera using the WASD controls.

Why the fuck would anyone think this was a good idea????
>>
>>567584
Idiot, you select the part you want to orbit around and click the button to centre the view on it. It's the button in the view panel under the orbit tool thing. Then once you've centered on it, orbit and zoom however you like and that piece will always stay in the centre.

Don't bag on something just because you don't know what you're doing.
>>
>>567586
Yeah you're wrong. The orbit camera recenters based on where I move with the WASD keys.

It does recenter on the object when I click on "view", but it shouldn't damn well recenter just because I move the camera using the WASD keys. This is a retarded system and don't pretend like you know shit when you clearly don't.

How do I gitgud at re-creating celebs and what not through sculpting. Just hours of practice per day?
>>
>>567608
It's no one thing, honestly.

You need to have a good grasp of how the human face looks and how different facial features affect ones perception of a person's visage, stuff like eye and mouth placement, infantility and hypermasculinity, fat deposits, bone structure, etc.

Then, take a bunch of references of the individual's face from every conceivable angle. Front, side, half-profile, upwards/downwards angles. Make a collage out of all the images if necessary.

Then, use the references to try to recreate the face in 3D space. In order to make it easier you should probably use the Genesis 3 base mesh or something, then just work from that. Don't forget the importance of good textures also. Good luck.

The reaction is much the same on their facebook page, which is where the announcement was.

Also note: the reason they are calling it genesis 8 is to bring the numbering in line with their iconics, Victoria 8, Michael 8, etc. People are still pissed about the numbering thing too tho.
>>
>>567751

>>
>>567752

No. It would be called genesis 4, on which would be built Victoria 8, etc, except they felt that caused confusion for new customers. So they changed the base number to reflect the iconic generation number. It's still a new genesis base. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Here's something most people never figure out with DAZ assets. Develop for the newest and shiniest, but use older generation stuff for your own shenanigans. Genesis 2 will be fine for years to come, and because it's older it'll be cheaper. Plus with the transfer utility, you can get morphs from any genesis generation to any other generation of genesis.

I seriously don't buy the "Our programmers at Daz are top tier but are not allowed to fix the bugs in the program or improve features because of internal politics".

Some of the bugs like the Collada and FBX import/export bugs should be able to be fixed in at most a couple of days.

I think that if Daz gave mCasual access to the source code he'd probably have most of the bugs fixed in a week. Give him the source code and then pay him for every bug he fixes or every new feature he adds. He seems to know more than whoever it is who is currently coding for Daz.

Hey /3/ can I can't seem to get the shaders right when exporting the characters to Maya/Arnold, as you can see here. Besides the obvious changes in lipstick, lighting, and hair color, it's the exact same model with normal and roughness maps. Any of you have done this? What are your settings? Biggest problem I've had it's with the eye reflections, even after using an HDRI map, they look plain and dull. Help and I post DAZ render with huge tits.
>>
>>567927
When using maps in Arnold use this kind of thiking for the color space settings for each map.

If it has to do with color, eg, specular color, diffuse, use normal srgb.

if it has to do with light(rough, normal), use raw

if its a hdri, use raw or linear. Should fix your texture problems for the most part.
>>
It's annoying how indoor scenes take like 10 times longer to render than outside.

I've already had the correct colorspaces. I think the problem is the arnold renderer color-corrects the images somehow to make them more visible, so they look plain. Once I save the original image it looks more like this:

Are you serious? Arnold is one of two primary rendering solutions used in Hollywood production, the other being Renderman.

I can apply G3 skins no problem, some of the autofits for hair are quite off though. No shapes because no G8 shape pack.

You can apply g3 clothes and hair too. It has built in clones for g1, g2, and g3.

The base V8 face needs some help tho. It's good, just not pretty, like vicky usually is.

hahaha oh wow. Genesis 8 is literally the same figure as genesis 3. The base model has the exact same topology.

Unless they drastically improved the skinning of the figure, which I doubt, there is no reason to use genesis 8.

It is the EXACT same figure as genesis 3

Is there a utility or something to help me with 2d texturing out there?

I'm doing this arm tattoo for one of my characters, but as you can see in the pic there's an obvious aberration where the texture seam is. Basically, I'm wondering if there's an easy way to resolve this business, like if I could paste the tattoo picture directly onto the body and have it generate textures from there. I'm pretty sure that's how they do it in the vidya industry.

I could spend an evening in photoshop fixing the seams but if there's an easier way, I'd love to know!
>>
>>568187
Actually you're almost there. If the character has an .obj open it in Photoshop (and if it doesn't, export an .obj for the whole body). This is how I do character textures and it handles the seams automagically.
>>

>>
>>568189
So you probably saw this coming. Anyway, I've figured out how to 3D paint just fine, but I can't figure out how to paste an image on top of the 3D model.

When I copy paste an image into the document it puts it on a new layer, as opposed to projecting it onto the 3D mesh. Been searching Google also but it's difficult to find troubleshooting for my specific problem. Got any pointers?
>>
>>568190
Before you get started, be aware that PS is a resource hog when doing 3D painting. Flush the cache often and save oftener.

LOL NO

From the forums

>Character morphs would not work directly because of the polygon difference; however there is a method using the transfer tool in DS to copy morphs using the G3 clone in G8. Also only textures based on G3F UVs will work, the others will need to be converted using DS's Map Transfer tool.

>Clothes won't move backwards, and only textures based on the G3F UV would work. Zev0 has a utility coming up to convert poses.

At least make a great anime figure for genesis 8 ! And no, your retarded Star figure with retarded eyes and bratz doll proportions doesn't count
>>
>>568229
>your
That's an RDNA buyout that LLF immediately converted to a G3F morph for the same reason DAZ converted The Girl to a V4 FBM, future clothing compatibility.

Creating a good, usable toon fig (or character morph) is something best left to people with experience in character design. Currently that means 3DUniverse and historically Kim Goossens and Neftis. The rest have been goblins both literal and figurative. Goossens and DAZ got away with never making a male counterpart for The Girl but longterm this isn't a smart strategy if only one character in a render follows a visual idiom.

Anime? None of DAZ's designers even watch anime; every successive iteration of Aiko just becomes a more realistic Asian girl.

The worst part of all of this is planned obsolescence on DAZ's part where they've adopted a console manufacturer's mentality that you will literally rebuy the same thing every 3 years as long as they make promises about it being better.

They actually -did- drastically improve the skinning. The topology is the same, but the weights + JCMs allow for much better deformations. I still use g2 tho. I'm not upgrading until I am fucking ready.

Also note that being in the A pose makes the hips and thighs mesh more relaxed in legs-apart poses.

>>568177

There's always drama when generations change. Use what you like.

>>568196

The base clones are only a couple of megs each without textures and their own JCMs.

>>568206

All morphs for all versions of genesis can be transferred between all other versions of genesis with the transfer utility. Look up tutorials on youtube. You can use V8 morphs on genesis 1, even. It's just a matter of knowing the process.

>>568229

You missed the part where I said I'll believe it when I see it.

>>568330

It's already pretty decent. Of course, if you have a library of past stuff, you can just use that. However, SickleYield already has tutorials available to teach people how to use g3f stuff for g8/v8.

>important note to all

g8 characters will all use the same UVs within a gender. V8 will use the same UVs as all other g8 character morphs, so textures will be more flexible.

Just use what you like, and have fun with the program.
>>
>>568268
>Someone should make a "like Daz" software but focused to anime figures
It's called MikuMikuDance. There's literally nothing about Poser or DAZ that precludes anime designed figs or even characters for existing figures.

For fucks sake, RWBY was animated in Poser Pro using MMD characters Monty and Shane converted to Poser compatible rigs.

If you can't articulate how or why figures of a particular set of stylized proportions would somehow require its own separate program, you probably shouldn't be talking about software you haven't even tried already.

The only meaningful difference between an Aiko-morphed Victoria figure and an MMD figure is degree of stylization and some minor texture changes. Some anime flavored figures are rigged SLIGHTLY differently regarding the head where visemes manipulate the perimeter of the mouth but intentionally preserve the overall lower head shape instead of working a jaw (in other words emulate the cheat of cel superimposition), but that's nothing to do with DS or Poser.

Neither sounds particularly realistic because no one's corroborated the layoff and the store hasn't done anything reactive since I started following it on a daily basis 8 months ago (and looking at how product prices graph using the DazDeals extension).

The narrative being spun here is that the company's "new" owners (being the Israeli investors who fired Dan, Chris and Steve 5 years ago) have reduced DAZ to a skeleton crew and are somehow hoping Morph3D will overtake DAZ3D or that they'll find someone to buy them out. Meanwhile new DAZ3D products continue to be made and sold, DAZ isn't hemorrhaging PAs, no unusual sales are occurring, and all we have is >>568516 claiming the house is burning.

No one's showing posts from the DAZ forum with showstopper bugs in Genesis 8 or DS suggesting a hasty release of either/both.

>>568511
>>568516
At its largest DAZ was maybe 20 people most of whom were sales/site/clerical/administrative support, with only a tiny number being content/software developers. In other words not enough of them drew a salary the company could effect meaningful savings through reduction. Try to remember DAZ was founded by 3 people, only 1 of which was a content developer and the other 2 sales executives.

ATM both SM and DAZ's owners have concluded they have a captive market and have therefore downsized/outsourced their teams. Expect new releases to have one neat feature each but overall sluggish improvements.

>>569276
>and with smith micro cutting staff do you guys think merger
SM is an old, publicly held tech company that started out in modem technology and has diversified broadly since then. It has shareholders and annual reports.
DAZ is still a privately held company not old enough to vote (Google is confusing it for something else and it is not a subsidiary of NewsCorp) and has never had to publish its P&L statements or anything else of the sort. Any talk of selling would require DAZ to open their books to the prospective buyers (the SM shareholders in this case), probably going back at LEAST 5 years if not longer.

Going in the other direction, the "poison pill" threat from Larry Weinberg directly implies he can veto its sale to another company (right of first refusal being only one of several possibilities). If SM screws the pooch he'll take Poser somewhere else but it won't be the company that fucked his product over.
>>
>>569365
>How many employees do you think Daz has/had?
In the early 2000s their site had an employee profile page on it with EVERYBODY from Dan Farr down. It had maybe 24 people.
Right now, DAZ develops zero content, except updating the freeware at the center of their ecosystem and commissioning a pair of new sculpts every 3 years. All DO content is either subcontracted to (or bought out from) their PAs.

DAZ's staff is a few DS programmers, customer service, marketing, administration and site programming/maintenance; all of which could easily be 12-15 people or less at this point. The promo images on product pages are trades with some forum artists in return for keeping those products; most people would rather be paid in store credit than money for banner images so there's zero need to hire regular artists. And just like right here, the forum administrators do it for free.

How many people did YOU think DAZ needed/needs?
