Still part of my initial workflow. It's like a fucking sketchpad in 3D.
So sad that Faggologic just bought it to eliminate an opponent and to assimilate tech.

well, seems like it all worked perfectly according to plan.
this small program made a big ruckus all over the web back then and many didn't see the necessity to obtain zbrush anymore. the majority of non-professionals who get zbrush usually forget about it quickly again after they realize they don't have any talent for sculpting anyways.

the main danger though was that the programmer of it is actually fucking clever and the program developed incredibly fast with stunning new technology inside (the realtime triangle subdivision that no one else had back then). this crossed the line and it was pretty obvious that either Autismodesk or Picklelogic would buy it to neutralize it.

funniest part about it was that the developer was bragging about how this is actually great for sculptris and how he moved from (sweden?) to some sunny office in the states and only a couple months later there were news that he actually left them again or maybe got fired.
so in the end the application stalled, they took all the code and the developer was only kept as long as they needed him to help implement his code into zbrush.

all of this shows how important it is that something like blender stays fucking open source at all costs.

>the developer was only kept as long as they needed him to help implement his code into zbrush.

Except Zbrush still doesn't have any kind of realtime subdivision. This is how scummy Pixologic is, even Blender got dynamic sculpting topology before Zbrush. In the newest version of Zbrush instead of implementing something useful they're bragging about how they finally implemented a traditional 3D manipulator, something every other modeling program has had for years. I used to be big into Zbrush but as every new release gets less and less impressive I get the feeling that they're just stalling like Autodesk does with Maya.
>>
>>560423
>. This is how scummy Pixologic is, even Blender got dynamic sculpting topology
whatever blender has is absolute dogshit m8, you should know that by now.

zbrush is and was the #1 sculpting software. Git gud, or just complain here, anonymously.
>>
>>560424
This level of retarded fanboyism is what let Pixologic get away with stalling the updated Zremesher algorithm for 5 years when 3D Coat figured it out in 2.
>>
>>560425
>3D Coat
just no. You are the cancer killing this industry.
>>
>>560398
>Still part of my initial workflow.
It probably still should be. Nothing does what it does better than it does. You can always pop it into zBrush when you want to add more detail.
>>
>>560440
indeed. I think it still has its place.
kinda like some programmers love to program in fucking notepad.
sleek and straight to the point creating stuff and no bullshit you don't need when sketching things.
>>
>>560427
What's wrong with you? The cancer killing this industry is the lack of competition for the shitty ass garbage products dominating the market. It's depressing that ZBrush and Maya/Max are the best we have. I hope 3d Coat gives ZBrush a run for its money.
>>
>>560427

Oh no! A competing product that is easier to use. Well, wrap it up boys, this is the end of the 3D industry.

Thanks a lot 3D-Coat, you killed it.

Why is no one making an open source sculpting program? Trying to add everything into blender is annoying dedicated programs make more sense a lot of the time.
>>

They don't have the power to forbid anything.

You will get either bought out or sued by Autodesk/Pixologic, to prevent competition.
>>

>You will get either bought out or sued by Autodesk/Pixologic, to prevent competition.
They can't do anything about GPL projects. The only real problem is getting it started.
>>
>>560781
they are hard to make.

eventually someone will make a sculpting addon to blender which will be a whole lot better, just give it time
>>
>>560923
>they are hard to make.
>eventually someone will make a sculpting addon to blender which will be a whole lot better, just give it time
That's the problem though, zbrush isn't using standard polygon tools while blender is. Any attempt to make sculpting tools in blender is a dead end for now. It might be possible when 16GB+ video cards are common if you can leverage the GPU more.

For now though a stand alone open scultpting program makes more sense.

>>
>>560923
>>560928
>>560933

What are you talking about?

Blender DOES have sculpting tools. It's just that (in my opinion) it "feels" clunky as fuck. I'm way too used to the Sculptris hotkeys and can't set them the way I like it in Blender because I'd have to re-route a ton others to make that work.
Also there are lots of tiny lags or other shit that annoy the hell out of me when I'm so used to the smooth operation inside Sculptris.

Yes, Sculptris tends to crash very often if you go over a certain amount of triangles but when I stay under 400k it's buttery smooth, stable and I don't even need more in the sketching phase.
>>
>>561090
>Blender DOES have sculpting tools. It's just that (in my opinion) it "feels" clunky as fuck. I'm way too used to the Sculptris hotkeys and can't set them the way I like it in Blender because I'd have to re-route a ton others to make that work.
That's the problem, traditional modelers are laggy when trying to manipulate detailed models in realtime. Trying to add sculpting tools to them is stupid. We need an open source program built around being able to manipulate more detail than conventional modeling programs can in real time. While zbrush is fairly good pixologic is far too slow and lazy. They won't even make a linux port despite many VFX places run maya/mari on linux while feature updates are far too slow. There needs to be more competition when it comes to hybrid 3d/2d modeling.

Ah, just found it.

I really don't get why people hate on Zbrush so much... it's literally the best sculpting tool, and not only sculpting. it has shitton of good features
like zmodeler for example, which is very awesome box modeling tool and very very vcerstile. if you try to learn how to use it.

oh and Zbrush is meant to be used with stylus/pen, big portion of people who complain about it's interface try to use it with a mouse.
I love it's IU it's just different than other apps, but it does not mean that it's fucking bad... you mus make your custom layout and it becames intantly very awesome.

I'm not saying that it's perfect, but it has the best features... at least for now..
as 3d coat goes it's also a great great soiftware. I use them both in a workflow. zbrus for sculpting, 3d coat for retopo/UV s and painting textures, but zbrush also has great painting tools. and R8 will be awesome. I don't get why people complain about it... it's an update not a new version

Because a good part of this board are brain-dead Blender fanboys. They will defend it and put it above every other tool.

They don't directly compare it with zBrush since the difference is so humongous, so night and day, that even their sense of ridicule would trigger.

Another part of the hate comes from a general rejection of paid software. It's funny when you see people blabbering around here about Maya costing $4k when Autodicks gives out student licenses to ANYONE with half a brain. And even if you pirate, like in the case of zBrush, these people give more moral fucks (on teh 4 chinz no less!) than the actual company.
Trust me, if you are learning (and most of us are), Pixologic, Autodesk, Allegorithmic
, etc. (Maybe Adobe not so much) do not give two fucks about you pirating in order to learn the tool. They expect you to. Just git gud, make a living, and pay your license.
>>

so much this !!! I've talked to devs of 2-3 companies (quixel, marvelous designer and IDK someone) on CGPeers comment sections. every one of them were asking for input to pirate "community"
devs also do it, or at least have done it... piracy is not a direct theft like many of these dumb kids percieve it... if you'll get good at it you'll eventually buy it. ifyou are not a real dick..
who is not learning because of it, is just lazy and don't want to learn anyway.
+ I get why people love Blender, I just tried it, because somuch people are hyped about it, it's an awesome software, actually I'd take some of it's UIdesign parts and merge with Maya(I use maya as general soft),
but, but just because you have not tried other softwares don't count that it's better than them, even if it can do the same.
which I 100% guarantee can not do what Zbrush can
and angry blender people about Zbrus's UI...

>piracy is not a direct theft like many of these dumb kids percieve it... if you'll get good at it you'll eventually buy it. ifyou are not a real dick..
autodesk lost hundreds of millions last year because of piracy. Now word is they are going to have to sell out completely and merge with Adobe

>>
>>560497
they don't forbit anything. It's just a plea. You don't get your license canceled or access blocked in any way if you do lewds. The software sometimes connects to their servers to check if the license s'legit. You can model what ever you want, they neither monitor nor care.

I don't hate paid software I hate zbrush, give me a linux port and a proper GUI. Companies making 3d modelling applications just have a bad attitude in general, far too slow at fixing bugs, constantly ignore feature requests. Some of them should consider doing something similar to what epic did with UE4. Let customers have the source code but still retain copyright. That way bug fixes and usermade features can be fed back into development. The autodesk problem needs a solution their near monopoly is a disaster.
>>
>>561632
>don't hate paid software I hate zbrush

well you don't get to hate zbrush because you are pretty much forced to work with this tool if you want to have any sculpt that worth a shit. unless you are already familiar with mudbox and did the appropriate things to learn it but it would be stupid to learn mudbox when there is zbrush.
gotta agree with the poster above me. people pride themselves in pirating like they have they gave those corporations the middle finger. these people don't even care that you have been are pirating their software because your art most likely is piss. most people don't even make enough money to live off 3D art anyways
im not trying to offend anyone i just think that the idea of "pirate and make dosh" is a fantasy in most cases

>>

Jesus christ.
Pixologic Hired the guy to help with dynamesh and purchased sculptris while at it.
Sculptris as a 32bit program used to (still does??) crash after 3.6 gigs of ram usage.

Anyone who cant use Zbrush is a fucking scrublord at this point, JUST SET MOVEMENT FOR PEN CLICK, it'll be the fastest program you've ever used.
Think of it more as a "sculpting program(or hell even painting)" and less of a "modeling program" and the shit you trip on will disappear.
>>
Autojew rotated to subscription based licensing, I wish I had been smarter and bought a commercial creation suite when it provided perpetual licensing and none of this subscription based horseshit. Atleast its still possible to buy sealed older copies of Zbrush.
>>
>>565050
You have to pay to get updates on a perpetual license.
>>

>Think of it more as a "sculpting program(or hell even painting)" and less of a "modeling program" and the shit you trip on will disappear.
The main problem is the lack of alternatives, there's no other program to replace it if the developers decide to exploit their monopoly. Development is also slow as there's no pressure.

Even if it's features are very basic I think it's important that an open source program capable of sculpting very high details be created. As long as the core functionality to interact with high detailed meshes is there complex features can wait until there's a reason zbrush is not convenient.

sculptgl is as close as you'll get to a sculptris alternative. if it wasnt in browser (and lack of pen pressure) and some more brushes and i would use it as a substitute.

There are lots of things to improve and possible to improve without going the fake 3d way.
For example not using an stone-age OpenGL which apparently get finally updated to a recent version soon.
