Autodesk Ramping Prices

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I pity Autodesk users, this was an email sent out by Autodesk. TL;DR - if you have a perpetual license (IE not on the current cloud-based subscription) than maintenance/renewal prices are going to increase as such:

by 5% in 2017
increase by 10% in 2018
increase by 20% in 2019

Full email can be read in this thread -> http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=2&t=1440034&page=1&pp=15

So basically, this is a marketing ploy to get perpetual license users to jump ship and hop onboard the subscription train. I'm glad I learned Blender, albeit I'm mainly a Modo user now.

Not sure how well the industry will stomach this.
>>
There is very little I hate more then subscription based application. it's the micro transaction of GCI
>>
>>554057
let blender become the industry standard for modeling
>>
>>554110
This, I've already abandoned all autoshit products from my pipeline. All I need is Zbrush, Blender, and Marvelous Designer.

to be honest. about fucking time. blender earned its position in the frontier..
>>
Why does every fucking post on this board devolve into blendershills shitting on everything?
>>
>>554327
OP here. The reason is simple - Blender shills lack experience with any other software. I love Blender like anyone else, but it's sad to see what was once a proud product like SoftImage go down in flames.

Worse yet, this hurts the users. It's a lose-lose situation.
>>
might start learning modo.

currently using the free student licence, but when I start looking for work I think I would rather out right buy modo, then be tied to a never ending subscription.
>>
>>554327
>>554721
y'all numbnuts don't even know what shilling means shut the fuck up memelord go sculpt a pepe
>>
>>554724
i agree with the guy above. autodesk products have been the standard for many years and now they are forcing young artists to buy their software at business and home.
>inb4 pirating
if you work at some large company or even small one, this could hit harder than you imagine. they can even put you in prison for that.

the point is that people now have to learn modo and blender which is a good thing. you don't have to buy subscriptions for thousands of dollars a month anymore if you run a company
>>

>if you work at some large company or even small one, this could hit harder than you imagine. they can even put you in prison for that.

i'm literally dying
>>
>>554727
you might not know this but the government conduct software checks, not autodesk
>>
>>554110
Not happening with that garbage UI. It's literally more of a challenge to learn than how to model itself. The foundation must be in cahoots with autodesk to keep the UI so bad consider how much they defended it a few years ago. Then again GNUtards and the like are turboautists.

Anyway, fuck these cunts. They really want people to move onto their subscription garbage so they can siphon $4000 every 3 years while they update absolutely nothing. They know everyone that uses their software thinks nothing of the version updates.
>>
>>554728
hold my sides

It's seriously so terrible, I use modo and blender on occasions, blender has most of the features I need and in some instances is better than modo but the UI makes it impossible to switch completely.

How difficult would it be to create a custom GUI for blender?
>>
>>554736
impossible for you
>>
>>554737
If what Ton or w/e said is true, then it's borderline impossible for anyone.

He said something like good UI is so integrated into the functionality that you can't part them.

Which is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. It's been a convention for nearly three decades that you try to keep the UI as independent of the core functionality as possible, within reason of course. But to suggest that their own programmers can't change the UI means Blender is very poorly designed and they're just piling shit on top of it.
>>
not related but anyone know how to install Maya update 3 for Mac? I keep opening the dmg and go through the installation process but it keeps telling me installation failed
>>
>>554739
nvm i think i got it
>>
>>554738
I wonder if it would be worth a group of people forking blender. Carefully rebuild it with a proper gui and make it modular.

Start with a small release, that only has modeling and rendering features, completely focused on poly modeling, no sculpting, video editing, 2d animation etc. if it gets popular you can slowly port animation, rigging and other parts into it.
>>
>>554749
i think people are working on "dark blender" or alchemy for blender which is a plugin.

eventually i believe they will make some maya equivalent UI as a plugin
>>
>>554728

funniest thing ive read all lifetime

are you 10 years old?
>>
>>554057

i dont understand all the whining about this. if you dont like subscription, just pirate it. nobody's going to find out

source: work for one of the largest VFX companies in the UK and all our max instances are cracked. i think we have like 2 legit licenses of 3dsmax 4.0 from eons ago. fuck autodesk.
>>
>>554786
This.
If you are serious about this and also paranoid, the only thing you need to make it absolutely safe, is an offline workstation. Adobe and Autodesk products don't need access to the internet to get them to run. With an cracked RLM license server you have access to all major tools. The rest also runs fine without internet access. Houdini could get problematic and some plugins for max/maya, but most of it runs flawless with an cracked exe or cracked license server.
Nobody CAN have any proof about your pirate heaven offline workstation, because its fucking OFFLINE and nobody even know it exists.
You can even install Win10 on it with all telemetry shit turned up to 200%, because its your bitch and you never let it out of your dungeon.
Don't rent software and waste money, buy hardware you can own, touch, use and sell.
>>
>>554736
>>554738

AFAIK every function in Blender (that is, anything you could access via menus as well as some things you can't), you can access via scripting

So I think with the standard methods of add-on writing plus PyQT you could likely achieve whatever it is you think is missing from the UI.

Honestly though have you even looked into the default UI customization? What is it you even want to change?
>>
>>554786
LOL. I can understand that. I'd rather risk using cracked Autodesk than this unusable POS app Blender.
>>
>>554727

>On the other hand, piracy of software can be seen as a criminal act akin to stealing. In this case, the infringer can be charged with a criminal offense. In the United States, the maximum criminal penalty for copyright infringement is a fine of up to $250,000 and a jail sentence of up to five years. This involves damages that are both monetary and psychological. A prison record can seriously mar the life of any individual.

get fucked retards

If... IF anyone ever got caught, you'd never see another job in CG again poorfag.
>>
>>554736

Maya and 3DSMax aren't hotkey based. They literally filly the whole screen with buttons and commands for you autists to read, because they know you'd never be able to remember to map out your own keybinds.

REAL Modo and Blender users are on another level, fag.
>>
What do people dislike about Blender's UI specifically? The only thing I've heard is that it's hotkey based, but as far as I am aware, every function is on a menu too. Like you can press Shift+A to add an object to a scene, or you can just go to the Object menu and select it. Same thing, different route.
>>
>>554889

pretty sure they're all just bitchy and whiny and dont wanna take the time to actually learn new software. theres nothing mysterious or enigmatic about either blender or modos ui. they just dont want to take the time to figure it out.
>>
>>554889
longtime blender user let me explain.

>forced into using these side menu's for specific things, mainly for viewport options
>when you split a window the order of which you open these side menu's with hotkeys is reversed for some reason
>sometimes you can't close a viewport, especially when you have plenty of them
>everything is fucking small, important functions can be a 32x32 icon on the very end of some toolbar
>displaying alpha planes in both BI and cycles is a mess, have to tick several things
>can only use alpha planes in cycles if you have the alpha itself which is ridicules
>baking is like digging a tunnel through mordor, convoluted as fuck
>no way to save your colors when texture painting, can only sample
>grease pencil can only be used properly with two side menu's open
>functions in object select and mesh menu don't display their hotkey equivalents.
>timeline and dopesheet can serve same purpose but you have to use them both in conjunction

i can probably think of more, this is just from the top of my head
good thing is that the left side menu is very useful and can help to get things done quickly
>>
>>554894

>Longtime Blender user
>Proceeds to list nooby obstacles he hasn't figured out yet

Right...
>>
>>554897
i figured all of it, just listing the defections
>>
>>554894
>these things aren't problems because you can just autism to figure them out
Fuck off, it's intuitive and stupid as fuck.
>>
>>554899
dont you mean unintuitive you ass?
>>
>>554894
>no way to save your colors when texture painting, can only sample
>timeline and dopesheet can serve same purpose but you have to use them both in conjunction
Those are just flat out false.
>>
>>554908
You know it
>>
>>554889
>hotkey based functions
>the gui menu alternative was designed by a five year old

that's pretty much it. I'd happily use blender if I didn't have to memorize a fuckton of hotkeys.
>>
>>554889
I fucking hate not being able to select shit in the viewport without pressing a key.
>>
>>554918
>>556997
that's reasonable. but working with hotkeys don't improve your speed?
>>
>>554111
Add Substance and you've got mine.
>>
>>556999
>that's reasonable. but working with hotkeys don't improve your speed?
Yes, but you don't always model full speed, using blender is a chore. There's plenty of times when you're making a rough concept or finishing an almost complete model where you don't need to frantically modeling with hotkeys.

Most other programs you can lean back in your chair and drink coffee with one hand while you do these things. Until you have used blender to the point hotkeys are muscle memory it's not convenient.

Then there's the issue not being able to find some obscure feature in blender is often a 15 min+ google search. It might have been changed now but a while ago I was looking for smoothing groups in blender it took about 40 minutes of reading forum posts to work out blender devs decided smoothing groups shouldn't exist or something and you should split every group into separate meshes. I wanted to use the model in a game engine that relied on smoothing groups so blender was useless in this situation, purely because blender devs decided smoothing groups were bad and they should do the opposite of every other program. While possibly technically correct it was extremely stupid in practice.
>>
>>557099
unfortunately you can't adjust smoothing groups for each mesh in the object, but you can adjust the smoothing angel for all of them.
>>
>>554887
On the flipside, Blender manages to fill the interface with pointless shit to the point where the viewpoint is smaller than the max default without any of them actually being useful. Good meme though.
>>
>>554724
yall usin faggo gtfo
>>
>>554327
Unable to get validation from a good day's work (because companies never hire Blender experts) they have to resort to arguing/circlejerking on the internet for validation.
>>
>>557099
Did you look on stack exchange?

You're right that it's stupid that Blender doesn't just flat out have smoothing groups, but autosmooth + mark sharp + "Export FBX -> Smoothing: Face" works, at least for UE4

>>557112
>cluttered
Did you spend like 5 minutes with the program and declare it to be shit?

Because you can turn things off, setup your own custom UI layouts and cycle through them with the arrow keys, as well as press ctrl + space to expand a window and hide everything else (except the Tool shelf and Properties window which you toggle off with T and N)
>>
>>557161
>you can turn off the worthless fluff dialog boxes that aren't even useful

Wow, you mean in the same way that I can minimize the actually useful and organized dialog boxes in Maya once I've got all the hotkeys down?
>>
>>554799
Can't they find out if your program is pirated through the metadata of your files though?
>>
>>557169
There's probably fake license information in them that no client would have the means to check against license records.
>>
>>554786
Remember to report them to Autodesk for the lols if you change companies so that they can be audited and everyone who works there can lose their job and any chance at any future work in the industry. Alternatively you can wait until someone gets fired and does it for you.
>>
>>554786
Bullshit.
>>
>>557175
he's right you know
>>
>>557170
But if one would decide to work for a company they'd check records right?
>>
>>557182
Maybe. And then what? They probably wouldn't have access to your models, so you're safe, if being able to safely do bottom-of-the-barrel freelance gigs is what matters to you. It'll hurt your "Profile" as a 3D artist if you're actively trying to keep what you work with a secret to avoid anyone asking about the software license that you don't have.

I wouldn't go to the trouble of trying to freelance pleb gigs while you're at the sort of level where you don't know if you'll be able to live off your work, licensed or not. It's the equivalent to /ic/'s "Should I do porn commissions for big $$$?" meme where the money typically isn't all that good despite randoms being super adamant about it and it's easier to just find a real art career you can fit into before that sort of thing becomes profitable enough to be worthwhile, particularly if you get around to it before googling your name pings a bunch of bad Judy Hopps porn(or, in this case, models made in software that you're suspiciously hush-hush about).
>>
>>554894
None of these are correct.
Have you used blender for more than 2 seconds before giving up??
Thank you autodesk I guess.
>>
>>557251
>None of these are correct.
lol a few of these problems are mentioned in blender guru videos
kill youtself you misleading imp
>>
>>557252
>blender guru
There is your problem.
Fucking plebs.
>>
>>554723
>upset about Autodesk's strategy
>decides to use a product owned by the Carlyle Group

They are even worse jews.
>>
>>557253
if you get off from getting shit from free and defending a software just because the devs has been good to you, you are clearly fucked up/delusional. sort yourself out.
>>
>>557264
Sure bud whatever you say.
>>
>>554889

At first I suspected that there actually might be something wrong about blender that I cannot understand, but then I saw
>>554588
and realised this place is truly full of unskilled plebs, who probably never get to fully learn features of ANY software they use, be it maya, c4d or blender.

Blender does have less intuitive UI compared to other programs out there, but personally I believe it's hotkey and command system (space) are more efficient once you learn to use them and probably save a lot of time in longer perspective. Denying it is like going to a war with armour made of fucking books, because despite being heavy they're a traditional thing proven to stop bullets effectively. Why respect your time and comfort when you can just stay in the cave.
>>
>>557282
Not that guy but I agree with you on everything.
Its amazing how many people love to shit while being mediocre but are lost in a world where using Maya gives them sense of elitism.
>>
>>557282
Worth remembering that most people on /ic/ and /3/ are utterly hopeless and worthless for giving anyone career advice and the most prevalent career-related answers here tend to be to do shit that literally no other online 3D community would suggest, especially not the ones that contain actual professionals that you can confirm are actual professionals and not lying about being President of British Pixar or Feng Zhu's Apprentice on 4chan. Reley makes u think.
