With things like this laptop with 2x1080, fat i7 and an assload of 64gb ram, is there even a reason to get a desktop over this?
Aside from the price of almost 6k, obviously. But I find laptops very convenient and now that they can be this powerful, you can basically work anywhere, provided you got a power outlet.
Is there anything a desktop could do better? Obviously, a dedicated rendering workstation with >2 GPUs or even multiple CPUs will be faster at rendering and probably live longer. But that's a niche machine anyway.
>>551959
>Aside from the price of almost 6k, obviously.
Well, uh, no, that'd pretty much be the main reason.
The price is very high, the screen is probably not great and the second GPU would probably only be of use when GPU rendering.
It could be useful if you travel a lot or move between offices but why not just get one or even two good workstations for that price?
I have an i7 7700K with a 1080 at home for work and gaming and an i7 5960X with 2*970 at my office and that cost me less than 6k.
>>551962
To further add to my point, how ridiculous would you look if a client or a boss would come visit you when you're working on that space ship?
I guess if you have a lot of money, and you don't need to worry about looking professional, just go for it. Otherwise it's just a waste of your $$$.
the difference is that in 5 years when 1080s are half as effective as the current high end GPUs on the market, you're sinking 6k into buying another laptop to upgrade, instead of just 600 on a new card or whatever.
Also screen size and additional monitor setups.
Laptops are fucking tiny.
That isn't to say laptops don't have their place. If you need a mobile workstation go for it, but desktops will generally always be preferable.
Better yet, take that 6k and just build a small render farm.
i don't think it costs 6k$ anymore, at least not any msi that iv seen.
but still, with high end computers you only get like 2-4 hours of battery life, that's inconvenient unless you just browse the web most of the time
>>551963
I dont understand your point. other anon here
>>551964
its mostly the mobility.
you can have a laptop strong as a desktop, wouldn't you take it?
>muh upgrade
all computers need upgrades, it doesn't matter if its a laptop desktop or a phone. you can't escape from upgrades even if you buy the best computer that money can buy, the question is, does your work necessitate an upgrade
>>551964
for 6k of dollar here you can hire pröstitut for over 30 days
>>551990
>you can have a laptop strong as a desktop, wouldn't you take it?
i don't move around a lot, so no. but I can see the appeal.
also screen space is pretty important in my opinion. I can't see shit on those 17 inch screens.
Having multiple monitors on a desktop is also nice for 3d stuff. And if you're hooking up an external monitor to a laptop, that kinda defeats the purpose, no?
>all computers need upgrades, it doesn't matter if its a laptop desktop or a phone
well yeah, but with a desktop you can just pop out the shit you're upgrading instead of buying an entirely new rig, provided your motherboard is compatible.
most(99%) laptops can't do that.
It's a lot more economical long-term to go with a desktop, since sometimes shit happens and your hardware dies, or you may just want to upgrade in the future.
>>552005
i bought my hardware back in 2010, upgraded in about 2015 and it wasn't a big upgrade.
i can pretty much do anything i want comfortably aside from rendering big scenes or motion frames, which for those ill probably render online anyway.
OP here
I'm asking because I'm currently using a similar laptop but not as powerful (1070, 16gb ram, smaller i7). I build a case for it so I never have to take it out, and I take it to work and home everyday, where I have a big screen and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. All I have to do is plug in the power and the screen, pretty comfy. Ocasionally I take it to uni too and it's great to have so much mobile power.
Now I have the opportunity to write off new hardware I need for work, so I figured why not go all the way and get that MSI beast and give the current laptop to someone else.
Tho I guess for that price I could just build two similar powerful desktops and just save everything in Dropbox or something... only problem then might be software licenses
>>552016
look, honestly people here will always give you "worst case scenario" when it comes to being stuck and limited.
truth is that 3D is lightweight if you know how to approach optimization and not fucking shit up like having tons of particals you don't need or subdivide 11 times for basic mesh.
i mean, sometimes people give you those worst case scenarios where some shit might happen.
lets put it this way, if your mid-high range computer can't handle the task it means a single computer weren't meant to deal with that task in the first place
>>552017
I guess you're right. Thanks for spelling it out.
>>552017
>truth is that 3D is lightweight
that's no truth, that's your lack of knowledge showing
In other words, you are an fucking idiot for actually typing that and some people might got a little stupider for reading and believing it.
>>552141
You're both wrong. How lightweight it is is depending entirely on what you're working on. If you're doing advanced smoke sims it's heavy as fuck, if you're only modelling a low poly game models it's not.
>>552145
I AM doing advanced smoke sims.
But i did not imply that all 3d is heavyweight, i am very much aware that it is a spectrum. I guess i should have made clear that i a have a problem with a broad generalization.
>>552017
>optimization and not fucking shit up
that's what poorfags have to do with their shitputers all the fucking time and it makes life so much more enjoyable when you aren't forced to optimize and not fuck up and work with ease and without limitation and worry.
A computer is like a bucket of water. If it gets full too fast, you need a bigger one.
>>552151
>If it gets full too fast, you need a bigger one.
Or you could first remove the sand and stones you shoveled in because you were careless.
>>552151
You're dumb. everyone optimizes. It's in everyone's best interest to optimize a product, consumer or producer.
Most "upgrades" are aesthetic.
>>551959
How much do you really need to be mobile? Are you going to carry around the rest of your studio as well? The Wacom tablet and everything?
>>551963
To the average idiot, this would look like a "professional" artist laptop. Remember, normies think Macs are status symbols (not because they're better, they're not, but because everyone knows they cost more money).
It's not about real performance but shallow appearances.
>>551959
Nomatter what, those things are mini nuclear plants that can heat up a small mansion. No matter what you put in there the hardware will throttle because of shit thermal management.
Just use a Chromebook to remote into your desktop
>>551963
>how ridiculous would you look if a client or a boss would come visit you when you're working on that space ship?
The fuck? Are you posing for a photo shoot?
Who in the fuck cares how you "look" using a certain tool? Do you even belong on this board?
>>554932
How well does this work tho?
I used Teamviewer once and there's no way I could work like that. Not to mention connection issues...
>>551959
there is actually a good reason aside from the money. a desktop has parts that can easily be replaced or expanded and upgraded later for way cheaper.
but if money isn't an issue i would say the portability and functionality beats any tablet. so in that case a nice laptop might be very useful, especially if you're a freelancer or pro or a student with rich parents.
like for example, you wouldn't wanna render anything on a chromebook.
so i can see why you might want a beefy machine like that.
>>554970
I use chrome remote desktop. For rendering and compiling it's great to use home, as well for most heavy work, for light work I use laptop
>>554911
I love you
>ITT: things poorfags say to circlejerk each other's egos
>>555555
It's CPU is slower than my cheap desktop from 2010.
>>551959
>is there even a reason to get a desktop over this?
>get a desktop
>get
>desktop
I want to believe this is bait.
>>551959
Can you upgrade the GPU years from now? What about the CPU? How about the monitor?
>>556174
How does one own without getting?
>>551959
>the price of almost 6k
A 6k desktop can render you fucking mother realtime. And she´s ugly.
For 6k I can get dual Xeons, 128gb ram, and everything else. Why the hell would I spend that on a laptop unless I were on the move constantly? Which I'm not, and if I am I'm generally not doing workstation shit.
>>551959
>Aside from the price of almost 6k
>>551959
Laptops are a lot more expensive, a lot less customizable and a good one will be heavy as fuck.
But the worst part is that they're consumables. No matter how well you treat one, they won't live more than 4 or 5 years and you'll see significant performance drops after 2.5 years.
Also when something breaks, there isn't anything you can do to fix it yourself. Have fun being at the mercy of customer service.
>>556537
get parts, build desktop.
>>557059
only reason id get a laptop is for xxtra comfiness
>>558028
How fucking pedantic of you.
>>551959
If you're not rendering anything then just get Surface Book
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jFAkHoiyT0
If you are then get a workstation or outsource a cloud renderfarm.
you buy a laptop when you want mobility above all else, otherwise you get a desktop. stop this autistic discussion
>>559563
This anon gets it.
>>558074
What is that pic from? Reverse image ain't showing me shit
>>551959
i got an asus with a 970, use a 4k monitor when im at home, i do archvis
shit really couldnt be better imo
the convenience of having all my shit just ready on a powerhouse laptop for when i go meetings and breifings is more than worth it
>>554944
also who the fuck has clients come 'visit' their work station
i feel like my anime dolls and hentai posters and buttplug in draw which is sometimes out would be more of a problem
