Hello I have 3D Studio Max and Blender.
Would it be better to learn 3D Studio Max first and then adapt to Blender?
Or better to learn Blender first and then adapt to 3D Studio Max?
I want to learn how to work with models so that I can add mods to the games I play. I would end up having to use both but want to specialize/watch tutorials for one to start.
pic unrelated
it doesn't matter
You won't even notice, or have a need for the small tool differences in these programs until you're proficient enough with 3d, at which point switching over to another program takes like a week at most because you've already learned the fundamentals.
Learn whichever one has the nicest UI at first, and keep an open mind about using different programs as the need arises.
Don't get stuck on one program because of the sunk cost fallacy.

>Hello, i have a chocolate cake and a pile of turd
The ONLY reason to learn Blender is because it´s free.
3DMax license only lasts one year and costs $4000 or something.
Old dogs who use 3ds max since it´s first version (like me) who won´t bother learning a new software who does exact the same thing but with different UI just to avoid piracy exists, but if you´re young and talented do please learn maya, who actually has a cheaper license and it´´s used by major animation houses.
3ds Max has a UI and PC formats flexibility that no other software has - i actually use AVI blended with alpha chaneled png in precedural animated displaced mapped nurbs, for christ sake - but it´s autodesk´s cashcow and it will never be cheap.

I think I would ignore it completely if so many scripts for importing and exporting mods weren't Blender only. Is script conversion between the two even a thing or do they have to be rewritten from scratch?
>do please learn maya
>used by major animation houses
I will keep this in mind but at the moment would like to learn how to model. Animation looks like a trip to Mars. I need to learn how to orbit Earth first. Otherwise I can't reach the moon.
>3ds Max has a UI and PC formats flexibility that no other software has
Well you've just about sold me on it. I think I'll learn 3ds first then and then begrudgingly use Blender when I need to export models for mods. Hopefully not too much is lost when moving things between engines.

Not the same anon, but
>Is script conversion between the two even a thing or do they have to be rewritten from scratch?
blender uses python, 3ds uses maxscript. To my knowledge they are incompatible.
>will keep this in mind but at the moment would like to learn how to model.
Maya wouldn't be my first recommendation for modeling, but some on this board would argue it can model nearly as well as 3dsmax can.
>Hopefully not too much is lost when moving things between engines.
Nothing should be lost. Just use .fbx.
Blender's new .fbx export is shitty and sometimes requires minor cleanup with bones, but it works fine most of the time.
Autodesk programs play very nicely with .fbx files because it's their own dumb proprietary format that they've forced everyone to adopt.

There's an addon that uses Autodesk's own SDK. http://amyaimei.deviantart.com/journal/Bos-FBX-Importer-Exporter-for-Blender-2-77-604467313

The only reason to use blender is because its the fastest modeller. No the best, not the one with the most features, but the fastest IF you know how.
Of course you don't know shit about it because you never got there.
And price doesn't matter up until you make money with it.
I have software worth 20000+ $, now imagine how much i paid for it.

>the fastest IF you know how.
Fastest in what ways? Rendering?
>>550015
I think Blender people often say Blender is fastest because it has a lot of keyboard shortcuts assigned by default to common modeling tasks. Of course you if you set your keyboard shortcuts up for efficient modeling in Max or Maya that's a moot point.
>>550062
how the fuck is poly modeling faster in Blender than Lumion?
>>549997
Agree with this. Blender doesn't have the best tools but it's definitely faster and I would argue that it's more stable than Autodesk products which tend to crash a lot.
This is literally the only reason I use Blender
>>550086
yeah, Maya, Modo and Max*(?) are way more prone to crash.
Blender and Cinema4d are awesomely stable, until you load a fuckton of plugins in then they become slower and more crashy.
But one could argue its the plugins who crash the program since vanilla versions are stable.
*its been a while since i touched max

nice shitpost
>>550093
you know that's a free model on daz's website?
>>550098
kek I didn't actually
that's fuckin great
I wanna see alternative color pallettes
Max will just be killed like softimage eventually.

Never learn Blender first. Blender's UI makes it like the hispter of 3D software. If you learn any other 3D software most of what you learn will apply to most 3D software packages so you can move quickly from 3D Studio Max to Maya, etc. If you learn Blender first you will find learning any other 3D software to be extremely difficult because Blender's UI is so completely assed backwards.
The only reason to use Blender is because you're to dumb to know how to download the educational version of Maya or 3D Max.

Emotiguy! Gotta love the Emotiguy.

Minus T and Primantiss did all their stuff in Blender (Mantis also went on to do porn in blender). its fully viable to do quality work in blender

Blender won't get you a job.
3dsm will
>nuff said

maya or modo
>>550514
Looks like shit 1990s CG. Also how is this relevant whatsoever? The post is about what to learn first, not whether Blender is a viable option.
Learn Max or Maya Op you won't regret it
what about 3d coat?
>>549940
learn 3d modelling not modelling app. Work on your skills, max or blender are just tools.
