Rule of thumb is that any vendor who isn't Rendo-exclusive with their own store will sell cheaper on their own site. Occasionally a Rendo sale will bridge the difference but it's not typical.

For example, Ali's/Mankahoo's "Hr-" hair catalog is usually a couple bucks lower than the Rendo price, and right now is also HALF OFF until the end of the year, bringing most of his hair props well below $5:

A lot of what's in this sale is accessory content for items which aren't in this sale, but there's still a metric ton of nondependent content in it, starting with sets and props.

You might have gotten one of the Generation 4 bundles that went on sale for $4 earlier this year and not noticed that there were other $4 sale bundles that included the core products, V4/V4Morphs++/M4/M4Morphs++.

Once you have V4/M4 installed, DS will happily convert V4/M4 characters to later figures for you. It requires an intermediate step for each generation but it works (i.e. you convert a V4 character to Genesis, then convert the Genesis figure to G2F, then G2F to G3F, about 5 minutes total). And somehow, it manages to retain detail even though G3F has inferior facial topology (probably internally using HD morphs). I posted that mega-sale here the last time it happened and will probably do so again.

If you're going to develop more normal characters using these figures without converting them to Genesis1/2/3, I strongly recommend getting Stephanie 4/Hiro 4, which are presets for more mundane body proportions (Vicky and Mike are supermodel/superhero by default). Until Generation 4, the male version of Stephanie was David, and then they decided since Hiro 4's mostly bishie to just fold that into Hiro instead. Aiko 4 isn't as versatile if you aren't planning to make anime characters.
