Blender is free and gets the job done

This is an apt comparison; Blender doesn't "just werk", if you try to use the Defaults your renders will look like crap.
You've got to take the time to learn and setup custom lights, materials, and so on, as well as turn off a bunch of annoying shit in the Options and turn on essential things in Options as well as enable extremely useful free Add-Ons (packaged with the software but disabled by default)

Really though, this is true for all software once you get beyond absolute beginner. In the end you're going to have a library of your own materials / shaders, lighting setups, and reusable assets
