A friend of mine asked what kind of software he should use for very basic 3D modelling and animation.
It would be the style of pic related.
I figured blender would be a good option, but I am wondering if there is any more basic software.

Blender is to 3D modeling as Manual Transmission is to driving.

people love manual transmission

People love Blender too. But if it's automatic you're looking for, Blender ain't it.

You cant get more basic than blender.
every program is generally "basic"
I think what you are looking for is a program with ease of use.
Blender is free and gets the job done
there plenty of tutorials all over the web.

Then what's "automatic"?

c4d

Less manual transmission, more a second person in the car trying to constantly drive you off the road.

If he can afford, go for cinema 4d, its the easiest to learn imo

This is an apt comparison; Blender doesn't "just werk", if you try to use the Defaults your renders will look like crap.
You've got to take the time to learn and setup custom lights, materials, and so on, as well as turn off a bunch of annoying shit in the Options and turn on essential things in Options as well as enable extremely useful free Add-Ons (packaged with the software but disabled by default)
Really though, this is true for all software once you get beyond absolute beginner. In the end you're going to have a library of your own materials / shaders, lighting setups, and reusable assets

I love manual transmission

I have to disagree. Maya is just way easier to navigate and use.
