I want to start learning 3d modeling, but I am absolutely shite at art.

I used 3DS Max's...
...Tessellate, and all it did was (up until level 3) add more polys while keeping the ass-look (then it crashed.)
...OpenSubDiv, did pretty much the same as Tessellate.
...TurboSmooth, somehow made it look EVEN WORSE

I think 1 or 2 subdivs should be enough. The ugly look when smoothing is usually due to triangulated quads. Make sure its all quads before smoothing. There was a plugin that automatically did that at scriptspot.com but dunno what its called.

I think the hair should be re-worked from scratch. turbosmoothing that hair would look mushy and wierd.
