If I understand your question right, they use a variety of EM detectors. Microwave arrays have been up for a while, as have IR and of course visible light. X-Ray detectors are newer, and gave us that "cosmic background" pic a number of years ago. Gamma Ray detectors are newer still, though I don't think any were pointed at this event.

Black holes can be observed through the x-rays and hawking radiation they produce, as well as by the gravitational lensing. Gravity waves were observed with a tool that uses lasers, splits the beam, and measure how long it takes to reach sensors.
