Far to many different "spoops" are in this show to have all of them be based on real things. That is of course unless the writers went through basically every folk tale that has been told through the ages.
Like where are the howlers from? they are my favorite "spoop" from the x files, they are the things that appear in the pictures taken when that fat german guy is around.
