I'm pretty sure when you're freaking out about states not being square, you're the one with autism.

The states western side is bordered by a couple of rivers. The land beyond the other side of the rivers was not part of America when Virginia became a state. To the eastern side you have the ridges of the mountains, that's where the border was placed when they split from Virginia. The state could have ended up more fucked up because none of the southern counties wanted to split from Virginia.

You must not live here. In colonial times land surveyors used ridges as well as rivers to define counties and state lines. And we have a lot of them here. You see the potomac river makes up most of the northern edge which is why its a weird shape. And the Western edge is the ohio river. And the Eastern border is more complicated because it was divided during the civial war. The northern panhandle simply takes up the leftover space which separates the Ohio river from PA. Maryland in its charter claimed all of the land between the mason-dixon line and the potomac river.
