Anyway, to answer op's question, is better to stand your ground than freak out. You can possibly get info out of the ghost, like about it's life or why it's still around. Or get it to do something, like wave at the camera or knock on command of some shit.

It depends, believe it or not they can be as dismissive as you and just leave hostility or hospitality might not register if they're trapped to begin with for something they're obsessed about.
Also if it gets violent and you don't know how to defend yourself beyond a confidence bluff, harm can come to you but not the ghost. You'll resign to instinctual fear and/or anger and there you go.

You can't just pretend to be "not scared"
You actually HAVE TO NOT BE scared, period.
Fear usually is what they feed off of.
If they don't have fear, they don't have fuel.
In most cases.
If you're dealing with a bad spirit, they just want to scare the shit out of you, or maybe even cause harm, but mostly scare you. If you show you're not scared, they will most likely leave you alone.
However, demons, are similar, but different. They definitely want to cause harm, regardless of how you reason with them. "I don't care if you're here, I don't want to hurt/bother you, etc"
That is what they are there for. That is their whole purpose, their goal. To hurt you as much as possible. Relentless.
And they definitely feed off fear. You can possibly win against them if you don't feed them fear, but it would be extremely difficult, seeing how they use your actual fears to get to you.
Example, your grandmother died and you miss her dearly.
They will implant or create illusions of your grandmother, in an extremely disturbing state. Maybe an illusion of her body contorted in strange positions and her mouth stretched wider than humanly possible.
Just as an example. They use other methods as well, but it can be difficult to not show fear especially when they are catering themselves to customize to your particular fears.

happened to me lots of times. it all depends on the 'ghost'. in old houses you'll typically find reflections that seem to play out like recordings and maybe they'll even manifest some momentary intelligence to stimuli you create.. but they're not that impressive over all. most other entities show a bit more substance, and they might do any number of things, though you'll probably find that usually boils down to nothing. occasionally you'll come across something really nasty, i mean like a code blue "demon" or a class 4 roaming vapor, and without the right protection they will actually draw fear out of you. even if you cant see the "demon" they can still hide nearby and you might feel your emotions being pushed or pulled of their own accord. they seem to feed off of this energy so if things are going bad from the jump off they're probably just going to get worse unless you know what you're doing. these things can actually get a bit dangerous, particularly among people who are easily manipulated or are of poor health. I'd recommend burning frankincense in all circumstances.
