Well technically and devoutly religious person ascribes to the idea of an ongoing battle between life forms on a higher plane of existence (angels demons ect.)

The idea that humans/animals/objects can be possessed these spirits is referred to literally in many religious texts not only the bible.

Whether or not this is factual, exorcism do still take place and there are many believers, and it is supported by the vatican

Yes, the Vatican believes in exorcism.

But, an exorcism is a different thing from what you see in movies. The exorcism ritual works only with devout religious people and is considered a valid form of psychotherapy.

I can't really explain it that good, but when a person needs an exorcism, the rewarding system of the brain is malfunctioning and the person is drawn towards something that is considered bad or wrong in relation to his or her spiritual value system. So to speak, he or she cannot feel the love of god anymore and is in a vicious circle of despair.

What a person during the exorcism learns or is being reprogrammed to is to feel the core values of christianity again, feel and understand the concept of the love of god again and feel joy of accepting christ as their saviour.

I very much doubt that it would or could work with someone not christian or not really believing it. If you are not a devout christian - and I do not mean those fans of Jesus that believe he rode on a dinosaur, you better see a normal therapist.

No, the Vatican doesn't belive in demonic possessions, the rite is permitted only after a very long plea from the relatives of the possessed one, but before the Vatican itself send psychiatrists priests (there priests who also learn and teach any branch of science) to the families and strongly recommend the hospitalization of the subject in mental home.
The exorcism serves more to calm down the families of the possessed that to heal the subject himself, in fact it last for months or years, one or two hours of mass for three or four days a week.
Of course there are catholics who strongly believe in demonic possession, but our community count more than two billion people, and there are every kind of person in it, it's very segmented, despite having an unique spiritual leader.
