Why is he depicted more as an Asian than a curry (I know they're Asian too but... Come on)?

I honestly don't know much about him, he was rich and walked away to pursue enlightenment. Very noble after all.

Why then is his path so convoluted? His moral teachings are there, but why is his meditation path so hidden?

It's like how blacks depict Jesus as black, some Asians depict him as asian.

Since most Buddhists are Asian, that is how Buddha is depicted
>>
>>17240967
>Why then is his path so convoluted? His moral teachings are there, but why is his meditation path so hidden?

Well it's not really hidden at all, but people like the idea of epic quests. The best place to hide treasure is in plain sight. The only reason to put it in a fort is to draw attention to the fact that it's treasure.

People also make the mistake of assuming that perfect emulation will lead to the same outcome every time, which is not the case.

Just because you followed in Siddhartha's exact footsteps does not guarantee you Buddhahood at the conclusion of your journey.

Buddha operates on a principle of "the more words you use to describe or explain a perception, the further that perception is from the truth."

Same principle as jokes, really. You either get them or don't- and even if you still laugh after it's explained, it's never as funny.

I'm a bodhisattva, for the time being. Most of my path lay in westernized traditional Zen. First time I saw "One Punch Man," I couldn't stop laughing because it's entirely about the joke of "enlightenment."

I can explain it to you if you like, but it might take a bit, and it probably won't be as helpful to you if I do.

He looks like an indian to me. Maybe he looks nonIndian to you bcoz of his fair skintone. In ancient times Indians use to have fair skintone bcoz of their good diet and lifestyle, even in our time you can take a look at indian monks (Buddhist,Jain and hindu) they look better than average indian.

Maybe its curry that made Indians darker.

I had to Google what the term meant and I didn't know there was a word for it. I feel like that all the time, I'm just muddled by my own lack of self-discipline and feelings of hopeless and overwhelmed of where to start.

Ive never seen the show and don't know much about Buddhism so they would be wasted on me.

It was said by some Zen master.

That if you meet the buddha, kill him.

if you meet the buddha, kill him because if you believe you are enlightened and better, you arent. The road is yor spiritual path, the buddha represents yourself.

Theres nothing to gain or loose in enlightenment.

What do you guys think of the fact that the dali lama will be appropriated by China once the current dali lama passes away? There will literally be a false dali lama complete with a false following to go on for ages until the end of time, all in the name of squashing any sort of independent spirit of Tibet.

senpai, its a metaphor. if your on a spiritual path, and you think you are buddha, and you feel that you are sooo great and so holy, it means youre just lost in another ego again. you have to kill that.

>>
>>17242920
Sorry, but he's right.
You either know or don't know.

If you think enlightenment is some staircase where you learn more and more then you're wrong. That's not enlightenment; it's study.

Enlightenment is the realization of truth, and has no progress other than simply doing so.
>>

To "kill the Buddha" means to kill your concept of Enlightenment.

It's not about killing your ego or killing a guy who claims to be the buddha.

If you're clinging to an idea of enlightenment, that ain't it. So kill that thing so you can move on.

Enlightenment is beyond words and ideas.

By clinging to a concept of it you are deluding yourself in believing that you can achieve it. It's a merry go round created by your mind to keep you thinking that you're getting somewhere when you're avoiding the only real thing that's here.

How many steps do you have to take to find reality?
>>

Not >>17240869, but he's referring to one of a duo of statements made by Linji, a Chinese Zen monk.

The second one is "If you meet your forefather; kill him."

Normally, this is explained non-violently by saying that it means to tell anyone calling himself a Buddha that he's missing the point of Buddhism. This is a valid interpretation in the sense of correct doctrine, but it isn't want Linji meant.

Linji meant that a Buddha has no desires, and so wouldn't care if he was killed, and moreover is trying to achieve nothingness in the first place. This is the same reason he tells you to kill your forefather (As opposed to your father, who would still be alive;) so that you would never be born. The grand father paradox, and again this is what a Buddhist is striving for.

But there's a deeper meaning to the koan; a Buddhist doesn't want anything, including to be without desires. He doesn't care if he has desires or not. From one incarnation to another, he just goes with the flow, back to the source.

And when you get to the source, you realize that by going to the other shore, you didn't wind up someplace new - you just made it to the other side of the Atlantic. Desire is an innate part of samsara, and can't be eliminated. From nothingness came desire, and back into nothingness desire will go.

So, you choose a pleasurable incarnation. Moreover, you wake up to the fact that you've picked every incarnation.

>>17240934

All of them.
>>
I've done some basic research on Buddhism a while back but everyone always described it so cryptically. So what even is Buddhism? What does a Buddhist strive for, and why? and what's enlightenment?

Contrary to popular belief, Enlightenment isn't actually the point of Buddhism at all. It's more besides the point, really.

Buddhism is about adhering to the precepts that the Buddha created. He created a lifestyle for people that attempts to ease their suffering to as little as possible. It won't free you, but it will allow you to feel more happy and secure, so that you can live your life harmoniously.

Freedom for the Buddha was only important for his own journey. He spoke of enlightenment only as a possibility, not as a goal because he didn't believe that enlightenment was for everybody. What the Buddha intended to do with his religion was to make people live a dharmic life, not to become liberated.

People mistake Buddhism as a strict path for Enlightenment which is what creates the confusion. Because anybody who looks into Gautama's Buddhism sees that Enlightenment isn't actually the point at all.

Zen Buddhism seems the only one sect that makes enlightenment the central focus, and it has little to do with Gautam Buddha's teachings, and more to do with the enlightened masters that started the sect.
>>
>>17247762
All have an inner and outer structure. One is the faith of the people, usually syncretic hogwash mixed with what little useful philosophy the dirt farmers have managed to throw together. That is the dharmic life you speak of and sum up rather well. The inner path is that of the monk. It is the fast road. It is the light that guides the masses. Enlightenment of all beings is definitely the point, but the timeframe so slow that it's hard to even call it anti-natalist.

At the heart of zen is the same heart, the same sutras, the same rules and regulations and interpretation. The only difference is the approach.
>>
>>17243904
actually kill the Buddha means spank the monkey, choke the chicken. it's a masturbation euphemism.

>>
>>17248126
Thanks for the clarification. I was indeed talking about the dharmic lifestyle that's tailored more towards householders, farmers, and worldly people in general.

There is indeed that inner path of the monk, which I see most pronounced in the Zen tradition. Although, I have to say that Zen is a very fast and straightforward approach to enlightenment, but that the other monastic sects of Buddhism seem less invested in it.
