Both although IDH could account for everything alone I like the romantic idea of aliens traveling light years in search of other intelligence.

I think both are happening. We are "visited" by many different species. From humanoid to things we can not even imagine. Think of it this way, if you walk for five minutes in the in the wilderness, you will pass between hundreds if not millions of life forms. You dont notice them because you are higher from of life or can't see them because they are in a microworld.
Now imagine that you are this lifeform,
millions/billions of our years advanced beyond our civilization.... Yeah, we are just as small as the things you can not see in the woods, as much as you dont care about those lifeforms
in the woods, whatever is coming
interstellarly/interdementionaly , has absolutely nothing of interest in us.

But "they" are there.
