The thing is, is that you are not mentally prepared to handle all their demons at once, and then combine that with your own ghosts and demons, and you go mad.

Now say that you are an individual in a tribe plagued by an unclean spirit you can't face on your own, and your local medicine mans remedies aren't doing much. A skinwalker would appear, deduce what spirit was latched on to you, prepare some of your flesh to be consumed and worn by him, and then when the evil attacked him thinking he was you, the skinwalker would defeat the spirit using his sheer willpower.

A Wendigo is a skinwalker who failed and was consumed by the great evil he faced.
