Have you ever dealt with any codes or cyphers ever? You dont need the exact alphabet for it to be english. Assuming you are an rp'ing asshat like I fthink you are since you won't post a link to a news artocle or an obituary (even john does get obituaries), I'll bite anyway. My guess is this. That book is containing occult knowledge, quite possibly the names and sigils of certain spirits, encrypted for both safety and respect. Based on his death - gutting himself open like there is something inside him - im guessing it is related to evocation. Certainly there are also other aspects of magic in those 200-300 pages, such as formulae and spells.

He either went insane as a price for the knowledge, but more likely the said knowledge degenerated his mind. Im guessing he misused it, which is why he ended up like a homeless man driven to suicide.

He wanted you to pass it on - maybe so that someone can decipher it and use that knowledge. This seems more selfish than noble: he didn't want his work to go to waste. Obviously there is something in there which held value for him - which is why he told you to keep it safe. He was definetly attached to it. He didn't want to destroy the book - he wanted it to survive, yet he killed himself brutally. This seems to point towards that the content isn't concerning the ascent to divinity, but the pursuit for power.

The content of that book, however fascinating, is dangerous. Curiosity is a shaky ground for the pursuit of the occult. Leave it be.

You have m already. It looks like n with a little line pointing down, unless the writer mistakenly used n. If you come across a symbol other than the big ones that you don't recognize, you can work out which of the remaining three it is (J, f or z) by filling out the rest of the letters and seeing what fits and makes a word. The first thing you need to do is find out who this dead person was. You can snoop around and either tip someone at the morgue for the report (cause of death, name, age, etc). Track down his friends and family. Find out where he lived and worked in the past...was he a veteran, etc?

Arabic is sigillic in nature; and it coorelates with Hebrew as well. Many of those letters compare to arabic as handwriting compares to language like this, theyre slanted differently, maybe a dot or a line added here or there, but there are also some definitely norse letters in there too. My theory is this. The homeless man didn't find 'the old ones' - instead, he found some demons pretending to be; demons are actually said to be the worlds best actors. Elementals are also known to trick people, but the nature of this whole thing, particulary his death, seems demonic. These creatures fed on his negativity, so much, that he felt they were inside him. This would explain the violent way they presented themselfes in as the old ones, or maybe he personified his negative traits to work with them magically. Either way, that book is sure loaded with bad vibes. As I said earlier, leave it be.

The old ones he was seeking seems to refer to the gods, or universal essences. They are the same everywhere, but present themselfes differently as per peoples disposition. For example, the gods of the greek mythology are the same gods as those of, say, the egyptian mythology, while the jews sees them as archangels. It's just a matter of fitting them correctly in in the Qaballistic tree of life. Why he would invent his own pantheon seems strange, but i guess it's a mix of demonic manipulation and personificating his own traits. If he did come in contact with the gods, they would have lifted him up and not making him wish he hadn't listened to them.

As for the 'crowfoot', that is the man-rune, also known as elhaz or algiz rune, which Odin picked up as he hung upside down on the world-ash, associated with thinking, making, measuring and ordering. Only when it is turned upside down (like in the peace sign) does it become a crowsfoot and symbolize destruction, dissolution and madness.

I don't think you will find anything of worth in that book, except a pearl or two, an interresting story and a bad example to learn from. If you find what went wrong, i would be very interrested to hear.
