The Whisperer in Darkness. That story really creeped me out when I first read it. Most of his work I find entertaining, not really scary... But The Whisperer in Darkness still creeps me out when I think about it for some reason.

I'd go with The Thing on the Doorstep. Some call it his worst, but it's amazing. Also just re-read the Shadow Over Innsmouth a few days ago, the whole transformation concept is terrifying.

Rats in the walls, hands down. The horror isn't as direct- a man goes mad from things he glimpses and there implications about himself. And I love the Ghouls in general, and it seems pretty clear that the De La Poers are Ghoul-related.
>>
>>15101070
Aside from tentacles, not much to diagnose him as a Gay...

He was married to a woman for a while, so I'd wager (sorry to go a bit tumblr) a romantic asexual.

The fuck are you babbling about? Firstly, his works did have some Theosophic Influence, but the primary influence was prior Weird Fiction. Secondly, Theosophy wasn't written by any one man- it was free form religion with some vague ideas about nature and spirits and shit. Is Sherlock Holmes a ripoff of Theosophy?

As great as Lovecraft was, he's not really an unsung hero. He's a very well sung hero.

>mfw captcha
>>
>>15100956
He was an classist who also believed that being born into rich families made you a better person with better blood by default.

Just saying "He's a product of his time" is usually good enough, but from what's known of his life though, he seems more like someone stuck on the aspergers spectrum rather than someone with malicious intent. The only thing he hated more than other people was himself. He deeply resented anything outside of his own little routine, couldn't identify with basic human desires, especially sex. He was left alone before he was an adult when his parents died. He was crippled with self-doubt and when he wasn't being paid pittance or being rejected from publications, he withheld his writing out of fear of rejection. He died in poverty and in great pain from cancer in his forties.

happy borthday
>>
>>15101036
"Cool Air"

It has just the right amount of pacing, creeping horror and brevity that makes it a pleasure to read compared to some of his longer stories.

racist and xenophobic

but anti-Semitic?

I know Lovecraft hated basically anyone who wasn't British or of British descent

but any sauce on him specifically saying 14/88 gas the kikes?
>>
i dont care much for his silly ooga booga octopus monstor stories, but i do find him as a person fascinating, i guess b/c i somewhat relate to him? oh well who giveths a fugg habby birfday u fuggin old weirdo lol :D
>>
>>15108362
That literal phrase? It's not impossible. Gas had been used in WWI and was widely known about. It was generally regarded as an atrocity, one of the factors than made WWI "a war to end all wars". It's more likely he would've said shot or exterminated.

In the concentration camp sense, though, no. Hitler became Chancellor in '33 (Fuhrer in '34). Lovecraft would've read about Hitler in the newspaper, maybe read some of the books on which the Nazis Aryan mysticism was based. But Lovecraft died in the 1937, and until 1939 the Nazis weren't killing Jews. Oppressing them, yes, but not much worse than had been going on since the Middle Ages. Jews were never much welcome in Christian Europe.

As for Lovecraft being anti-Semitic, that's kind of complicated. He definitely said some thing along those lines, but he had Jewish friends and his wife might have been Jewish. To me it seems like it operated on two different levels. That he hated Jews as a concept, as an ethnic bloc, but the ones he knew personally he related to as individuals.

Sort of like how a lot of 4chan is racist, but we still have Morgan Freeman and Samuel L Jackson memes. We're bothered by the faceless boogeyman of a perceived enemy group. But the guy in front of you is a person, with a name and a job and a family, same as you.
>>
>>15101008
I really like "Dagon". It was Lovecraft's first story I read. In the beginning I didn't really like the style and everything but the more I read the more I enjoyed it and the more I started thinking back to "Dagon", especially after "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". I love drawing connections between all of his works.

Shadow out of Time, The Shunned House and Dunwich Horror. I -really- like the concept of invisible entities, two more of my favorite horror stories ever, The Yattering and Jack, and The Damned Thing deal with similar themes. I also really like Under the Pyramids and The Cats of Ulthar is the story I was dumping when I failed to fully clear my namefield and became an attention whore on 4chan.

I wish "they" would make The Shadow out of Time into a movie but to do it right would cost so much and be too niche.

Also racism back then was different from how it is today. Racism back then was much more common, but it was also based less around "I WANT TO KILL ALL THE NIGGERS", and more like "I don't trust them, but as long as they stay in their part of town and don't cause trouble I'll tolerate them, I guess."
>>
>>15116980
